RANT: Why do rants get the most views on this forum?

I was just looking at the front page, and I noticed several posts with RANT at the beginning that have over 1000 views.

Why are so many people viewing and responding to all of these rants? Is this forum filled with frustrated people who are looking to blow off steam?

Can't we think of something better to do than rant all day on forums? Is this the life we wanted to inherit as IMers?

Yes, I know it's important to be passionate about what you're doing, but should we really be devoting so much time to ranting about how things are rather than working to change them for the better?

Most of us are more attracted to bad news (as they say bad news sells). A rant is a complaint and I guess we just want to "get in" on the bad news and see what possibly could be wrong.

For example which heading would have you more interested:

$100,000 Donation to XzzY Corporation. CEO very grateful

    OR...........

$100,000 Donation Goes Missing. XzzY CEO Furicious.

Same reason people watch soap operas. Everyone loves conflict for some reason.

It annoys me when there is an interesting thread and then two warriors get into an arguement and 3 pages of comments later the original point of thread is completely lost.

i would love to see a tread titled "RANT: I JUST MADE 6 FIGURES THIS MONTH BUT I STILL MISS MY JOB AT MCDONALDS"

not sure why really just that it would crack my ass up!

as stated before people love to see others go off and light others up. i myself created a massive following at livevideo (one of the largest on LV at the time) back in 2006 thru 2008 when i was a vlogger by creating a persona of a rude crude jerk that would rant about everything and everyone. the down side is that ranting always leads to negativity and i dont need that crap in my life any more thats why i gave up vlogging and ranting in general.

    1. I've been an OTer for 5 years and don't find this to be predominantly the truth. The longest threads with the most views here have been either humor or political (no longer allowed) and off the wall stuff. You are just seeing more rants now that usual, period.

    2. Rants get watched because this is the OT forum, where we love to crucify whiners and spammers. It's a hobby. I'm sure that when mods throw some threads out of the main forum into the OT they are laughing demonically when they do so - much like throwing the Christians to the Lions in centuries past.

      LOL.

When I wrote this I was 1/2 joking, 1/2 serious.

The thing that ACTUALLY concerns me is how interested people are in the "gloom" rather than the "zoom." Like, we're living in the middle of a digital revolution, and us IMers are on the forefront of it.

I'm concerned that a lot of people who shouldn't be disgruntled are getting that way.

      People love controversy.

It amazes me how people would rather type out endless paragraphs of complaint rather than put those keypresses into something more productive.

It's fine to get something off your chest, but dedicating half an hour to making a post about it is another matter entirely!

Soapyshoe - you have made a good point - the energy and time ranting could be spent in more productive ways.

I used to think that 'talking things out' would help you move past them. I no longer feel that way and realize it just makes you relive all the negative vibrations while you are telling the story over and over.

With that said, on a daily basis we all suffer insults and things that make us angry. Most of the time we have to just 'grin and bear it' - being professional, kind, bigger, etc.

However, the negative energy adds up - you have to release it - I have read that most of the time when someone is yelling at someone that someone is not the one who is really making them angry -

I do admit however that for some reason - maybe because I can, I will come here and be really nasty about whatever is the topic that 'speaks to me'. I don't usually rant as much 'in real life' and I do wonder from time to time why I can be like this here so often.

Maybe it is a degree of anonymity - if you hate me for my opinion I probably won't know about it the same way I would if you avoid me or give me hard looks if you are holding a grudge against me. So I can 'get away with it' in a sense.

On the other hand it is just so good to be able to tell the truth - whether ugly or beautiful - not enough opportunity to do that in my opinion.

  • What’s all this FUSS I keep hearing… about endangered feces? Now, that’s outrageous!! Why — why are FECES endangered?! How can you POSSIBLY run out of such a thing?! Why — why, just look around you, you can see it ALL OVER the place!! Besides, who wants to SAVE THAT, anyway?! My goodness, where would we KEEP it?! It’s DANGEROUS, especially in the Summer!! Then — then, it could REALLY hit the fan!!

Off Camera Voice: “Species! The list of endangered species! Not feces !!”

Emily Litella: Oh Oh Oh my……Never Mind!!
