What's Your Town Famous For?

It seems every town, no matter how big or small, has something they are famous for...Could be the birthplace of someone famous, or something that was invented there, or having the World's biggest ball of string...

What's your town known for?

Right now, I'm in Estes Park, Co. Estes is known for F.O. Stanely, who invented the Stanely Steamer, a steam powered car. He also built the Stanely Hotel, which is one of the more famous "haunted" places in the USA, and is where Stephen King wrote "The Shining".

I grew up in Denver...A lot of people don't know this, but the cheeseburger was "invented" in Denver. The story is, a cook was making a hamburger and a grilled cheese sandwhich. He accidently dropped the cheese for the grilled cheese onto the burger. Instead of throwing the burger and cheese away, he ate it...And the rest is history.

What's your town known for (or not known for, but should be???)

    Great thread Kurt!

Portuguese here - Santarém, famous for a great view to the Lezirias at Portas do Sol, home of beautiful churches, Gothic Capital and also for worldwide famous Bull Fights, Forcados (see picture bellow of one in action) and Campinos.

Here's my nephew Gonçalo Veloso, doing what he does best:

He started doing this with REAL bulls (half a Ton animals) at the age of 15.

Well Troy is called the collar city because of all the shirt collars here.
      http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyrensse/article11.htm
Also Troy is the home of Uncle Sam Wilson, funny they tore down his house the same year they changed the city signs to say, "Troy Home of Uncle Sam"
Uncle Sam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
But Troy was put on the map by a little lady named Mame Faye - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And then there's this place just down the road from me.
Forest Park Cemetery (Brunswick, New York) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
      Urban legends

The cemetery has been the center of many local and national urban legends.
For one, it is said that the cemetery ranked in a LIFE Magazine article entitled
"Top Ten Most Haunted Places in the Country".
Some also say that the cemetery is the "Gateway to Hell".
Others also claim that a decapitated statue of an angel bleeds from the neck.
After researching the subject, the Brunswick Town Historian states that she has
never come across the LIFE Magazine article, and thus it has become another legend.
The "blood" on the statue also seems to be due to a moss that, when rubbed on a humid day, turns red.

I live in Redditch, Worcestershire (UK) and it's famous for 3 things that I know of.

The Enfield Motorcycle Factory. (Royal Enfield Bikes were famous years ago)

Fishing Tackle (Again many years ago it was famous for "split cane" rods as well as reels etc.

And hundreds of years ago for it's Needle factory's. Considered one of the most dangerous jobs in the world as the life expectancy was only 35 for the workers as the metal dust from the grinders would get in their lungs.

I'm an Air Force Brat so I'm from all over.

I currently live just east of Kansas City in a college town named Warrensburg.

Having been a dog lover my entire life, I am very familiar with the phrase "A Mans Best Friend Is His Dog".

What I did not know until I moved here to Warrensburg, is that this phrase got its birth here.

A very cool but sad story of how the phrase came to be is here - It is about a dog named Old Drum. Read it and weep - I mean get a tissue before you begin reading

As you probaly know then they used to make rifles and other weaponary, which is where they got the advertising slogan for the motorbikes from.

I know about them from owning an Indian motocycle (no it's not spelled wrong) in the late 60's.
It was Royal Enfield that first took the Indian in a hostel take over.
They closed the Springfield Mass. Indian factory and imported Enfileds with the Indian tank badge and sold them thru the Indian dealer network.

My town - Connellsville, PA is famous for two things.

    1. The No Crack Ordinance. City council passed an ordinance that if your butt crack shows, you get a summary citation.

    2. The Great Pigeon Shoot. About 10 years ago, we had a huge war on pigeons here. One night about 2 dozen volunteers and police officers turned downtown into a pigeon free zone.

There were dead pigeons in the alleys, along with crack free teenagers....

The school building (just one standard school building) was located in two states, three counties and 9 townships. The state line ran down the center line of the basketball court.

For students, it meant they had to meet whichever state standard was highest for each subject. blah!

I live near a town in the UK called Aldershot. I had to do a search on google to find out what it is famous form and found this bit of information.

Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) is reputed to have given his first stage performance in Aldershot at the age of five.

Hi Teresa, I worked in DeKalb for a short period at the GE plant there. DeKalb is also where barbed wire started. Joseph Glidden, the father of barbed wire started the barb fence company in DeKalb. I have him to thank for several scars received from wounds I received wandering home after nights of "too much" fun - if you know what I mean. This was when I was younger and didn't know any better of course.

Where I am now is a very new town so not famous (yet). However my birthplace town - York, UK has a few famous people.

It's the resting place for Dick Turpin (the highway robber that was hanged in the 17th century).
It was also the birthplace of Guy Fawkes that tried to blow up the Houses Of Parliament in the 18th century.
2 famous actors were born in York - Dame Judi Dench and Mark Addy (he of Full Monty fame and US Series Still Standing). I actually met Mark a few times upto about 10 years ago as he had a large town house around the corner from where I lived and was often in the local corner shop getting stuff. Pretty normal guy.
Also York is known as a railway town as it had one of the first raiways stations in the country and people like George Stephenson built trains there.
For you chocoholics it was home to the place were kitkats, yorkies and aero bars were made for centuries until recently (after nestle took over). Add in polo mints and chocolate oranges were also made in York for a long time.

My hometown is famous for a smog that killed 20 people and made another seven thousand ill. 1948 Donora smog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It is also the birthplace of Stan Musial. My dad played sandlot ball with him growing up. Stan Musial - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia About five miles down the road from where Joe Montana was raised.
I was actually born in his howetown because mine had no hospital. In 1972 our high schools merged so technically I went to the same high school as Joe Montana. For what it is worth!

I was born in the wagon of a travelin' show . . . no, wait, that's the lyrics to a song.

    St. Joseph, Missouri:

    1. jumping-off point over the Missouri River toward the "Wild West"

    2. where the Pony Express started

    3. where Jesse James ended

    4. Walter Cronkite's birthplace

    5. Jane Wyman's home town

    6. supposedly longest boulevard system in the U.S. at one time--still beautiful

The Patee House Museum with the Pony Express Headquarters next door are outstanding museums.

Probably better places to live but for darn sure worse ones

I'm pretty sure John Sebastian of Lovin Spoonful also went to my highschool.

I currently live in Warrensburg Mo as I mentioned earlier in this thread, but I lived in St.Louis most of my adult life.

St.Louis is the birthplace of the ice cream cone 1904 Worlds Fair

The oldest (and best IMHO) Real Rock Radio - KSHE 95

Soulards Mardi Gras is the largest in the MidWest - second in the nation to New Orleans

      The Gateway Arch

Oh yea, and that beer thing that is now owned by some InBev company across the pond.

I'll stop now before I begin to sound like a tour director

Wasn't it your mayor that came up with the lines

      and

"Let's make sure we get the dead vote out."

    And people past and present...

Florence is the birthplace of W.C. Handy, the "Father of the Blues," as well as of pioneering record producer Sam Phillips, who discovered Elvis Presley. T.S. Stribling, a 20th-century author and Florence resident, wrote a prose trilogy about the city consisting of The Forge, The Store (which won the Pulitzer Prize), and Unfinished Cathedral. Florence is where the 2009 British Open winner Stewart Cink was raised. He attended Bradshaw High School before attending Georgia Tech. Florence is also the birthplace of one-half of The Midnight Express, "Loverboy" Dennis Condrey. Dred Scott also once resided in Florence, where, as a slave, he worked as a hostler at the Peter Blow Inn on Tennessee street. A plaque at the former site commemorates his time there. Bobby W. Miller, who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in Selma, Alabama in 1965, was credited later with ending segregated locker rooms at the Ford Motor Company Die Cast Plant in Sheffield, Alabama, where he was employed from 1962-1974. Miller was shot down twice in Vietnam and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. Tom York grew up in Florence, graduated from Florence State Teachers' College, now the University of North Alabama, and spent eight years in radio in Florence (WLAY). In 1957, he joined WBRC-TV in Birmingham, Alabama as their sports director. He also originated the Tom York Morning Show (one of America's longest running one-hour local talk shows) on the air for 32 years. He was awarded an Emmy by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1995.[4]

My town I live in is small. Not a big city at all. It has a little store that seems to be growing each day by day. I live one street in front of the family that owns the store. I keep wondering whether it is going to go out of business in the near future. Things are getting a little tougher these days for stores to stay in business. The economy you know. It needs to do a better job of branding itself. I am not sure it offers the things people really need and I am concerned about the prices being so high. Their overhead seems to be out of control and they are paying their top employers way too much. Also they have a hard time hiring real people that need jobs. They seem to be approaching bankruptcy anytime now. Well, that is about all I can say about the store and town. Oh yes I did forget to tell you the town and store. The town is Bentonville, Arkansas home of the general offices of Wal-Mart. Please help them survive by going there and buy something. I think they would appreciate it. Just tell them I sent you. They know me. The town is that small. Everyone knows everyone.
