Could you do what you do if you only had dialup?

As I sit here, close to tears because I'm stuck in a rural area with 1940 phone lines (the tech told me) and only dial-up available, I wondered if anyone thinks about how lucky they are to be on high speed.

A couple of weeks ago, I was visiting someone and had an opportunity to use a high speed connection! WOW! I did in one hour what takes me at least 4-5 hours on dial-up!

What I have noticed is, because so many are high speed, sites have up-graded to accommodate. But it really messes up someone on dialup. It's very difficult to get anything done (but I'm not giving up!) when scripts time out, connections drop and coding is lost.
If high speed providers go to charging for usage...will that effect your business? Would you go back to dialup?
Just a little rant and thoughts!

1940s phone lines in Northern California? Kate, I thought your part of the world had all of the newest technology!

In answer to your question, no, I couldn't go back to dial-up. I think the only site left that loads quickly on dial-up is http://sfbay.craigslist.org/

No, there is no way I could do what I do on dial up.

I do not miss dial up at all.

North Carolina's 1940's phone lines?? Psshhhaw, in West Virginia, we have tin cans and string! To connect to the internet, we make buzzing noises into the tin can to mimic a dialup modem.

I might be able to do what I do, but obviously would be a bit slowed down.

I would definately set up one browser to not load javascript or images at all so that certain tasks would go quicker.

With video (or any other task that needs bandwidth), I would go to a coffee shop or library and upload from there once or twice a week.

I really wouldn't worry about the charges to high usage from high speed providers. I watch youtube quite a bit as well as movies online on the netflix account and am not even hitting 10 gig a month most of the time (averaging 8 for the last 6 months). Consider that comcast right now is allowing for 250 gig it shouldn't be a problem. Even if limited to 25 gig a month most of us should be fine and I would pay for more if needed.

Until a few months ago, I was on dial up only. Not only that, I was on 28,800 bit per second (28.8kbit) TOP SPEED dial up due to phone line conditions. The phone company wouldn't even consider ISDN if I'd pay for it.

So a few months ago I took the plunge and got myself a cell-phone based broadband. Pushes me up to about 200kbit on the low end moments. Still a screaming fast connection compared to my dial up.
