How about some survival tips?

This isn't about paranoia, I just believe everyone should have some plans and supplies in case of catastophe. Some simple planning can litterally be a life-saver and we shouldn't depend on our Government to save us.

Also, buying non-perishables in bulk and on sale can be on of the best investments you can make. If toilet paper is 50% off, stocking up and saving makes all sorts of financial sense/cents.

Here's some I've come across:

If you live where it's cold, always keep a few candles and matches in your car. If you ever break down and can't use your heater while you're waiting for a tow truck, a candle or two will go a long way to keeping you warm.

Also, get an old tin file cabinet and add about 8-10 emergency candles, then fill with wax so it's a solid block of wax with 8-10 wicks. This is a very good emergency heater/light source.

Have a bag or two of supplies you can throw in the car in case you need to make a quick get away. Throw a couple of Dura Fame (instant/fake fire logs) into your truck. These logs are easy to light.

Also, Top Ramen is good for car trunks since it can withstand freezing as well as hot temps.

If it's long term, water may be a problem...Here's my water filtration system:

Store water over-night, allowing for the particles to separate. Then, skim the top off for anything floating and discard. Next, gently scoop out the water being careful to not disturb the bottom layer of stuff heavier than water.

Have a big bag of sand and charcoal as part of your emergency supplies.

Using one of those 7 gallon plastic buckets, cut or drill some holes in the bottom to allow for water to drain out the bottom.

Crunch up the charcoal into smaller bits, then layer the bucket with 2 inches of sand, two inches of charcoal, two inches of sand, repeating till the bucket is filled.

Now pour in the water you separated in step one and filter in through the charcoal and sand. This will filter out most of the metals and solids.

Next, add 1 drop of chlorine per 1 quart of water and let sit for at least 30 minutes. This will kill the living things in the water. If you have a commercial water filter like Brita, you can run the chlorinated water through the Brita to get rid of any chlorine.

You can use iodine instead of bleach and I believe iodine is decent protection from radiation???

If you don't want to rough it by making your own water filter, you can just buy one at Wal-Mart that filters down to about 1 micron. It's for camping and very easy to use.

I should add my method is for a small group of people over a course of a few weeks or longer where you need to produce more water than a small personal filter bottle...But yes, small water filters and "survival" straws are a good idea for the quick travel pack.

Nonfat dry milk, and beefjerky keep well and can be tasty and nutritious.
Soap and sponges can help with cleaning. YES it's obvious, but can be forgotten.
Some sort of stand for a heat source to allow you to cook stuff, or warm water, for winter if power and gas are off.

Radio that can run without a battery.
LED flashlight that can run without a battery.
    Backup UPS, just in case.
USB drive with your favorite programs/data just in case.
Stockup on medicine, etc.. if needed. I have a surplus of medicine every place I have been. Between politics, stupidity, etc... you may have problems otherwise. and DON'T trust the autoship programs. CVS and walgreens are BOTH not trustable here, so I doubt others are.

If you have a nice patch of private land, plant vegetables. If you live near a stocked lake, or some such, keep earthworms in compost(GREAT to provide heat, get rid of waste, make potting soil/fertilizer, AND raise earthworms!) hooks, sinkers, and some nice fishing poles. GREAT if you want fish.

some gun/rifle. Rifles are better for hunting and easier to get.

BOOSTER battery for your car. BELIEVE ME, you'll LOVE this! It can often also double as an alternate power source.
