I'll just say JD is right, but the governmennts at least DID provide some school from ages 5-17, in fact it is mandatory for most people to go to those grades SOMEWHERE. SOME have an exclusion and can go from ages 6-13. Community college for state residents at least USED to be pretty inexpensive. Of course, all the crazy spending, illegal immigrants, etc,,, have RAISED cosrs, and lowered quality.

I have heard of lower grades having to buy books, which they didn't have to do before, and higher grades paying FAR more. And teachers claim that they now don't have enough for their materials and must pay more, And that was BEFORE the latest cutbacks in places like California.

So MAYBE, even if one COULD have given you a precise answer, it would be meaningless today.

Most private colleges/universities with board are >$50,000 per year. State schools are usually under $20,000 (without board) for residents of that state (it is more for non-residents).

There are other variables involved also.
For example I pay over $1,000 a year in school tax and I don't have any kids in school.

This is like asking how much a new car costs....What kind of car? Hundai? BMW? Viper? Bentley?

And what kind of degree...2 yrs? 4 yrs? Longer? It also depends on the state.

To get the lowest cost (without grants, etc), you need to be a resident of the state you go to, and attend a state school.

Here's the class schedule and prices for the Community College of Southern Nevada, which is about as low cost as it gets...3 semester hours cost about $225, which is $75 per hour.

I "think" you need about 50 semester hours to get a an associates degree, which is a two year degree. (In the US, community colleges are only two year schools and don't offer 4 year degrees.)

    So:
    $75 x 50 = 3750.

Plus books and some other expenses like lab fees. This is good for folks that don't have a lot of money. They get a marketable degree, plus have 2 years of credit towards their bachelors.

IMO, the US should focus more on this type of eductation that centers more on getting people job ready than just academics.

On the other hand, an Ivy League school like Harvard or Yale is probably $50,000+ per year.

Yeah but you'll be dead, so I'm pretty sure you won't care.
