Need Help With A USB Cable Problem (RESOLVED)

Real simple.

I just got a new printer. The USB cable that comes with it is like 6 inches
long. It's a joke.

I want to get a longer cable for it. Problem is, the end that goes into the
printer itself is VERY specific in size and shape. In other words, just some
generic USB cable won't fit.

How can I either?

1. Find a cable with a like connection that's longer (preferably about 6 feet)?

2. Get something like an extension where I can connect the end that would
normally go into the PC to the connector and then connect the connector's
end into the PC?

I prefer 1, but 2 will be fine.

Any help anybody can give will be appreciated.

The printer I have is an HP Photosmart c4780

Thanks.

** EDIT ** Thanks to everybody for their help. Got my new cable
and printer is now where it belongs.

  • 2 Is best, thats what I would do . Or google the name of the wire and see if they offer a longer one, I am assuming you done that.

    • While the printer can run on wireless, this is a USB cable I'm using. My
router is not wireless. At least the wireless part has been disabled because
of people tapping into my router all the time.

      Real pain in the ass.

  • Steve, There are AT LEAST 4 connectors for USB(1 and 2).

    1. Is like a square with 2 ends beveled. THAT is usually for things like printers.
1 is USB (kind of rectangular)
1 is MINI USB (KIND of rectangular but almost beveled on both sides and a LOT smaller)
1 is MICRO USB (like mini USB but smaller still and the sides are ROUNDED)

USB Cables - USB 2.0 Cables, mini USB Connector Cables, Extension Cables and adapters

NOT a recommendation, only the first site I found. The cable top center is PROBABLY what you are talking about. The third picture down is a MINI. MICROs are still not that common. Mostly for VERY small devices.

    • Steve, under where it says:

      Let Us Help You Choose

The very first diagram is the connection to my printer.

USB Standard B female Connector on Left (input into peripheral) A female Connector on Right (output from computer or hub)

Okay, so then what do I get...an extension that fits in the one end and
      connects to the other?

And if so, what do I look up?...USB extension cables?

Or do I just look for the same cable but with a longer length?

I'd think just getting a longer cable would be easier.

Sorry, this hardware stuff drives me nuts.
