Anyone here ever work with radio frequency tags?

I'm working on a idea/project and I think the answer I need lies in RF tags, but not 100% sure.

Here's a scenario: Let's say I have 2 coins about the size of a quarter. One is the main, the other a slave. I want an alarm to sound/buzz when the coins are separated by x distance.

Anyone know the technology to accomplish that?

    Hello Benq,

I've worked a lot with RF of all frequencies and applications.

You're talking about an application for RFID, RF identification, tags. There are several
kinds, and the technology is always changing, improving, etc. Basically, there are
passive, active, and semi-active tags. The latter two are more expensive, but they
do more and have more applications.

For smaller distances, I don't know 30-50 ft or less, a passive RFID tag would be
better suited. Passive tags are also much less expensive. So it really all depends
on your application, desired distance you're concerned about, and your budget.

I don't think it's much trouble setting it up to alarm. The tag readers, just a small
chip with small power source, usually a battery, basically employ R/W operations
and processing. So you could easily tap into the logic states on the receiving end
to trigger a digital alarm. Or, you can send the alarm state to any other devices
depending on what you want. Longer distances would require buffering and
amplification, but that's not a problem to do.

Hope that's what you were looking for.

    Ken

Thanks for the info. I'm looking for short distances of less than 10 ft typically. Can I contact you off line? I'd like to get a little more info if you don't mind.

Received and replied to your PM with my contact info, just in
case it doesn't arrive in your inbox. The WF seems to be in
    the Bermuda Triangle, lately.
