As we get older time passes more quickly every year.
I think about an old friend and tell myself, "I should call them and arrange a get-together". And before I know it a year has passed.
Well, last Sunday I got "that" call.
A very old and dear friend had passed away the night before.
Long story short, he had an alcohol problem. And to compound the problem he had retired at 49 with a very nice income.
So, he had money and time on his hands.
He had no family to speak of. Never married.
He spent his time and money on Whiskey.
One day, he fell down the stairs and broke his back.
He died last Sunday morning.
He was smart. A programmer for the Ohio Department Of Transportation.
He was caring.
He was genuine.
I waited too long to make "the call". The one I kept meaning to make but didn't.
Now, I can't.
We are holding a wake for him next Saturday.
Not a mourning of his passing but, a celebration of his life.
I write this not for sympathy but to say:
Make that call!
"One-of-these-days" may be too late.
