It wasn't me, I promise

Moderators: please excuse a rather unusual post which I think more people will see here than in "Off-topic", and I respectfully submit that it isn't really off-topic anyway.

Over the last couple of months, three very well-established, obviously successful Warrior-friends with whom I'm in occasional contact by private message here (two of them in the US and one in the UK!) have told me the same rather strange thing (the most recent one about an hour ago): they received a peculiar phone-call from someone (young, female, American-sounding voice) claiming to be "Alexa from the Warrior forum" wanting to "interview them about their personal experiences in Internet Marketing" or something very similar.

Someone seems to be impersonating me.

(I don't know whether to be flattered or irritated.)

The fact that this has actually been brought to my attention by three people (whom the mysterious caller presumably didn't know were actually sometimes in contact with me), naturally makes me wonder whether there are others who have also encountered the same thing.

To anyone concerned: it wasn't me, but someone (for reasons best known to herself) impersonating me. And I'd be interested/grateful if you could either post below or let me know by p.m., if this has happened to you. Thank you.
#promise

Depending on who the Warriors were, getting telephone numbers isn't all that difficult. Especially if they use their real names and a specific location. That's one reason my location simply says "north of the Peace River in Southwest Florida" -- it narrows things down to about 200 miles of coastline.

On the other hand, if you use a specific small town, a quick Google will turn up a list of possibilities. If you live in a small town or have a distinctive name, you might be the only one on that list.

That isn't good. Did anyone of those three happen to have some kind of caller id? If you could get the phone number of the person doing that, then you could probably deal with it although you have probably already thought of that.

When people are doing this, you are in the same class as Wal Mart and Microsoft

I would ask, are they saying they are 'Alexa' or 'Alexa Smith'. You are well known around here, but there can be more then 1 Alexa around here.

      Alexa,

It wasn't me either - my voice is way too deep :-)

Well all I can say is congratulations ... welcome to fame . The upside is people are trying to imitate you so your name alone is worth alot. The downside is they may tarnish your name if they use it in vien.

Presumably the trick of the hustler here is to say "Alexa" and not specify "Alexa Smith", taking advantage of the fact there is only one well known Alexa on here.

      Alexa,

It's possible the caller's real name is Alexa, and they're just claiming to be from here because that's where they scraped the initial data that led to contact.

I get a ton of people asking if I'm the Paul Myers who's spamming people and promoting Herbalife. Others warn me that someone is using my name, and a few call me some fairly unflattering things while trying to get me to give them back money this other guy allegedly charged their credit cards without them knowing.

People forget just how big the Internet is, and how common some names are.

Thanks for your reply, Paul. Yes, that did occur to me, the first one or two times; I felt (rightly or wrongly) that it was kind of "pretty suspicious", though.

To everyone else: thanks for the comments - don't worry on my account. I was unsure about even posting this, to be honest: not trying to cause problems to anyone; mostly just wanted people to know that if they get one of these calls unannounced beforehand, it really isn't me: I'd arrange a call by p.m. first if I wanted to call anyone here for the first time!

On the positive, at least it means Alexa is a celebrity of some sort, if people are going round impersonating! But its nothing comforting though.

How is it possible the persons' number has been obtained?

Something I have always wondered, is it possible hackers can access the computers of the users from here?

If someone is perceived to be having success of some sort, hackers may well want to access the persons' computer to see what they are upto.

If so what precautions should be taken?

Well, that part may be entirely innocent (indeed, as Paul rightly points out, it's even possible the whole thing is entirely innocent ). But some people with "considerable internet presence" do have phone numbers available online, perhaps? Some people with their own products for sale give a phone number for inquiries, and so on, I think?

(It may be supreme egotism on my part to imagine that "Alexa from the Warrior forum" is intended to sound like me, but that's certainly what three people thought was being claimed, and I don't myself know of another Alexa here. )

I guess most people, taking an unexpected phone-call, don't really think of that, though.

By way of minor update, thank you to the two people who kindly sent p.m.'s about this, whose caller did apparently specify "Alexa Smith" - so it was someone impersonating me. Well, I'm hoping that this thread will discourage any further episodes anyway, and apologies for inflicting this saga on the forum.

I'm trying to think what they hope to get out of this, but yeah, it's really creepy.

The past month, I've had someone sign up as an affiliate to a whole bunch of ad networks. I'm already a member of a lot, but these were networks that I had not signed up to. They signed up with my real name, address, phone number ... only thing different was their paypal email address so they could get paid. They did not have my social security number, fortunately.

I found out because several of these networks called me to confirm my application. I said ... what application? Finally, one gave me the Paypal email of the perp. I emailed and told them if they sign up as me to one more ad network, I would contact Paypal and anyone else I could think of.

The ones who called me, rejected them of course, but I wonder how many networks did not call and now have "me" as an affiliate promoting in God knows what manner and products that I most likely wouldn't promote.

Hope you get to the bottom of the impersonation. While it may seem flattering, it's rarely ever for a good reason.

It must be going around! I just got done dealing with a fiasco where someone set up a CPA network in my name, using my (previous) address and phone number . They applied for the backend of their company using my info, registered the domain in my name, etc.

Lord only knows what they were hoping to accomplish or get away with. Stealing people's money, I suppose.

Surely one of the 3 would have caller id service, no?

Gary, the call I got said Unavailable so the person is either out of country,
calling from a private number or using some kind of service to make their

000 012 3456 is most likely Skype. I use Skype and some people wouldn't pick up because of the weird caller id. I eventually got a skype number and you can have that show as caller id so it fixed the problem.

Getting phone numbers is pretty easy, even unlisted numbers. I used to subscribe to a service that could give you name, address and phone number (of most) and even their neighbors and relatives if you wanted them. If you had clearance you could even get their Social Security number too. it is all out there if you want it. You don't even need to know the town where they live, a state or general vacinity is enough. If the name is not too common, then just the name and country is enough. It is kind of spooky, but it is all out there, you just have to know how to get it.

Speaking of which, barring a major 9th inning rally by Tampa Bay, the Yankees just tied them for the best record in baseball. As soon as that's official, I need to give John Reese a quick email. Can you send raspberries as an attachment?

I'm originally from Buffalo. Still much closer to Pittsburgh and Cleveland than New York, but my Dad is a Yankees fan, so that's who we watched.
Shouldn't you be a Pirates or Phillies fan?
In Erie, they cheer for the Indians, the Pirates and (surprisingly) the Red Sox. But, as they say, "For the Yankees, every game is a home game."

Woah....wonderful things really happen when a hot chick posts a thread. It was like 10 minutes ago this thread was empty now it's sky high.

Anyway, there are only three things I can think of on why they would impersonate Alexa.

    1. Alexa has established a good reputation in WF. If telemarketers will use that name, surely they can catch the attention to whoever they are speaking with.

    2. It is true that some marketers posts their business numbers but that is for business purposes only. Nonetheless, that makes the number publicly visible.

    3. Alexa is a hot chick. I will not wonder if most of the people got called were actually males and that is a good strategy for catching attention.

And if a weird number shows up your caller ID, that maybe because these people are calling you from their computer (skype perhaps). Well, that is what I can think of. So next time, you better let your answering machine speak first before actually picking up the phone.

P.S. I emptied my inbox Alexa.

Impersonating someone who is well known and has a good reputation has always been a good tactic.

And it's a big boost if they look great as well - especially if they are impersonating a "hot" woman and the target are all males.

That being said it is still scary business to know that someone is out there pretending to be you and potentially, if not already, put you in a compromising position - one that, if not for that impersonator, you wouldn't be caught doing for whatever reason.

Hopefully this gets all straightened out so the true true Alexa gets cleared and can rest easy.

P.S. so if it's a true fake then does that mean it's true? :p

        Alexa,
I'm hoping that this thread will discourage any further episodes anyway, and apologies for inflicting this saga on the forum.
It won't. The more publicity these pitiful little sociopaths get from their games, the more they play them. As long as they can get away with it without painful offline consequences, they'll cheerfully keep feeding their sense of power.

The morons don't realize it's possible for the right person to bring it straight home to them. Or that it doesn't require the kind of technological or legal expertise they think.

That doesn't mean that posting this was a bad idea. And you didn't "inflict" anything on anyone. But you may have given someone the warning they need to be ready to "inflict" some very real pain on the person playing this game.

Yeah Alexa, I think you did the right thing by bringing this to light. Nobody wants to be impersonated and especially as you have taken the time out to develop a great reputation here. The one thing you can be sure of though, is that the person impersonating you would be never be able to do you justice and would immediately be foiled (as they did).

Hope you get it sorted once and for all!

To anyone concerned: it wasn't me, but someone (for reasons best known to herself) impersonating me. And I'd be interested/grateful if you could either post below or let me know by p.m., if this has happened to you. Thank you.
Yes, I just went through this a few months back. Some Psycho chick claiming to be me was having Skype chats with another member here.

Needless to say, that person became perturbed with who he thought was me, and it was followed by other warriors getting PM's about "me."

Lucky for me, one of those people who he contacted was nice enough to bring it to my attention directly here on the WF via PM and I was able to contact the annoyed party and set them straight.

Seems he had live chats too and the person sounded asian?

In any event, I would have no issue with anyone who wanted to confirm my identity by hearing me for real. There is video online with my voice on it, and I can show myself - so impersonators won't get too far.

It is annoying, so I do sympathize with you.

I have made it a point to show myself on some Friday Night Chats - and those people can likely vouch for who I am too - which is a good back up.

I rarely contact people - but if it is me contacting you, you will always have several ways to confirm it.

Interesting - thanks, Jill. Everyone who's been in touch with me has actually said "An American accent". But at least two of them have been woken up by calls in small hours of the morning and understandably perhaps weren't paying too much attention.

Nope. You're taking the fake fake you to be you, but it can also be the person who was assumed to be the fake you but really wasn't, thus making him also the fake fake you because if he's not you and he's not a fake you, then that makes him a fake fake you.

Dog knows, the fake one will probably put one in now...

This explains why I do not use my real name. Also, why I do not post a photo of me. OK some people are scary.
