Why Americans are bored by soccer.

People here argue that soccer does not have enough exciting moments for American sports fans, I have to agree. But there's a reason for that.

When Americans watch baseball, football, or basketball on TV they watch the very best level of baseball, football and basketball there is to watch anywhere in the world. When it comes to soccer however, when Americans happen to catch a game it usually isn't the best. you probably are watching some MLS highlights on ESPN and to tell you the truth that doesnt cut it.

If you however, watched the USA vs Brazil final of the confederations cup last year you will know what I am talking about. there were plenty of exciting moments in that game. If you are going to watch the World Cup, try to at least catch the big games, like the Brazil games, the Germany games, Spain has an awesome team this year. As the tournament winds down to the round of 16, and the the quarter finals, you will begin to watch the best soccer there is to watch. if you still think it's boring, then soccer really isnt for you.

But if you are going to compare soccer to baseball or basketball, at least try to watch the top level soccer games. Still I agree that soccer overall has less exciting moments for the neutral sports fan. I you grew up with it though, there's nothing like it.

That's a really good point. The WorldCup matches have been very interesting to watch and the only time I saw something that wasn't the "best quality" was when the USA scored a goal against England.

LOL, someone had to say it haha. In general the US played a good game and were lucky to take the draw. There were definitely times where the US couldve scored. But you can never be pissed to tie England with a player like Rooney just waiting to destroy your defense.

Can't wait for Brazil's debut game!

The average American dude is bored by soccer not because he isn't always looking at the best soccer can offer...

... he's bored by soccer because he is used to getting his excitement 2-3 times per minute.

Soccer delivers excitement perhaps 20 times a game over 90 minutes - at the most.

It's not enough for me - not after what I'm used to.

Lol, now that's something I never understand. everyone seems to have the same view over curling, yet they insist on showing curling all day long during the olympics.

Nope. To the disgust of my father, I don't follow any sports at all. Zero.
Yawn describes all of them. Hockey, football, basketball, motorcycle racing all are boring. By this I mean watch more than a couple of times and it's nothing but repetition. Pro sports is just highly skilled repetition. Watching sports is just another way of inducing trance.

I guess that's cultural difference. I am bored by baseball, basketball or something like that, on the other hand I play soccer three times a week and I find it a fascinating team game.

I've never been much of a soccer fan, and I'm still really not much of
one. But it's growing on me, slowly, for an unusual reason.

I frequent two restaurants, an Italian restaurant and a Mexican restaurant.
And they both frequently have soccer on the big TV. So it's kinda natural
to eat and watch the soccer, and it's growing on me.

One day, about a month ago, I was eating in the Italian place. I've been
going there for probably 20 years, and I know the owner. He had something
else on the TV, and I asked him if there were any soccer games playing. He
looked shocked, and then he jumped up, grabbed the remote and brought it
to me. lol. He said, go on and look for it. He's from Naples, and he's a pretty
    colorful guy.

The Mexican restaurant is funny. They're only open on the weekends. And
on Sundays, the place is full of Latino or Mexican families. All the guys are
watching soccer while their families are eating and talking. Seems like all
the games are South American or Mexican teams, etc. Colorful to watch
    it all.

There's this one channel, it's a Mexican channel, and whenever a team
scores this particular announcer says something, maybe like 'score,' and
I swear he takes a deep breath and says it for as long as he can. It's
    funny.

But soccer is growing on me.

Haha Ken!! are you talking about this announcer?

That's the Univision announcer.... so much more fun to listen to then the ESPN announcers who merely have a low key conversation. Some people make fun of this announcer, but even though he is extremely lively, they still give great interpretation of the game throughout the 90 minutes.

LOL. Yes! That's the guy. lol

Right, Univision is the channel. Just recognize the name, and of course
        I recognize that voice, too.

        That's great. Thanks a lot.

A statement like the above proves you don't have a clue.

Maybe you have baseball mixed up with football.

Baseball is the least physical of all the major American sports.

        You want sheer power?

        Check out curling. WHOA.

But seriously, I like sports that have some finesse involved with them. I used
to be an avid pro tennis fan. Back in the mid to late 80's until mid 90's. I loved
watching Bjorn Borg, MacEnroe, Ilie Nastasie, Jimmy Connors, Arthur Ashe, Billy
Jean King, Steffi Graff, Monica Seles, Gabriella Sabatini. There are others I can't
        think of at the moment.

But when they all started retiring, etc, I kinda lost my interest in it.

And the joke that was Anna Kournikova? Oh man, that was so screwed up. lol

That's why I love this forum.

I just learned that Cricket was classed as a type of sport !!

And here I was thinking they were swatting flies with a wooden stick

BTW - If you have trouble sleeping, watching cricket will put you to sleep very quickly

I'd definitely have to agree that there are not to many quality games on in the US most of the time. Though if you pay attention you can catch premier league games and champions league games on ESPN.

Though there is nothing better than the world cup, that is Soccer at it's finest. The England US game Saturday was amazing, and I think the Brits are lucky it was USA 2 - England 1.
