Well, most states, probably ALL, have their OWN government that is VERY similar to the federal government, and may even have their own constitution of sorts. But the president is called the governor, etc... Heck, one MA senator, when he became a US senator probably created some confusion for some MA people. You see, he was an MA senator, that simply became a US one from/for MA. People actually argued he couldn't do the job even though it was really the same. The only difference is that now his vote could affect more people.
That is just an example, makes no political point, and is NOT meant to denigrate this into a political discussion.
You know, there HAS been talk of splitting up California!

No matter which way I look on a map, everywhere else is either north, south, east, or west, up or down, left or right, so the empirical evidence seems to indicate that no matter where I go I appear to be at the center of the universe.

It's funny that's the reaction we get from just about everyone when we tell them we're moving there. Are you nuts?? Makes us second guess the decision but it's a good career move for my wife and all I need is a high speed Internet connection and I'm in business. We'll give it 2-3 years see how it goes.
But yea we'll paying twice as much for half the house in a state going bankrupt - or are they bankrupt already?
I won't miss the 6 months of winter here in Minnesnowta though.

Depends on what part of the State you move to. Almost anywhere north of LA is pretty cool (groovy?) as are the towns near San Diego. But if God is going to give the world an enema, LA is ground zero...

From Canada, but right now, living in Khon Kaen, Thailand! :-) Before coming out here was living in Vancouver, British Columbia though.
I've lived in a bunch of different countries around the world now, and I gotta say, Khon Kaen is quickly becoming the best place I've ever lived. One of the most unlikely places I would have thought of, but what the hell. It's great though. The coldest it ever gets is maybe +24C, we have a nice, large 2 storey, 4 bedroom house for $150/month, etc.
Plus some excellent friends just down the street as well. We kind of have the TV show "Friends" going on. We have our front doors wide open all day except when we sleep, so friends will drop by all the time, and we do the same. It's great! Much better than in Canada, where everything is 100% planned and scheduled, and people look at you funny for saying hi to them. :-)

We are an island nation of 700 islands, and 300 Cays. We are considered a part of the Caribbean because we share their history, but the Caribbean Sea touches none of our shores.

@GeoffH: If you want to live somewhere sunny, Singapore is one of your best bets because it's Sun, Sun, Sun ALL year round, yes no other season (sadly for me).

I live in Colorado during the summer and Santiago, Chile the remainder of the year. I lived in the People's Republic of California for 8 years and moved to Colorado because California was, and still is hostile to business. The United States is incurring debt at a rate of over a trillion dollars each year, and I don't want to repay it, so I reckon it's prudent to vote with my feet. Voting in a ballot box is not as effective.
I'm from the UK and spent haf my time in the glorious county of East Yorkshire and the other half in Switzerland (just outside Bern) but I am looking to move somewhere hot during the English and Swiss winter months!
