Anybody watching most of the World Cup games???

I'm trying to catch every single game so far, and I'm doing alright!

Lovin' it so far.

Just watching the USA game against Slovenia.. and the Slovenians have just taken a 1 - 0 lead...

Jay

p.s. The Slovenia goal was an absolute corker from about 25 yards out.... sweet!! A little worrying for England, though.. we have to play them..

Trying to follow the games. Today seems a day for upsets for the major teams.

I did not expect German to loose to Serbia but it happened.

Currentlty following the USA Vs Slovenia game looks good but still early anything can happen.

    Enjoy

oooooh... Slovenia take a 2 goal lead... England should worry a little after this performance from Slovenia.

Although, the USA were looking very good before conceding that second goal.

This game could completely switch around in the second half, they're not out of it, yet.

Yeah ive watched every game so far, I'm just pleased that the 2nd group games seem to have improved from the first games which apart from 1 or 2, were pretty piss poor

      Yeah.. that was a surprise.

The referee was card happy in the opening half, and Germany were reduced to ten men (Miroslav Klose sent off).. and it went downhill from there.

      Germany missed a penalty, too

Klose's first yellow card was ridiculous, never a booking in a million years, he didn't even try and tackle him

Uh oh, USA back in it with a goal

Ooooo.. Interesting second half prospects now..

USA grab one back (Landon Donovan the scorer..)

    @Noodle...

The ref was very over-excited with his cards, isn't it?... very strange for a man with the world's eye on him. You would think he would make sure he got it right. And I agree, that first yellow was terrible...

Holland do have the quality to win this tournament..

You have....Van Bronckhorst, Van Bommel, De Jong, Sneijder, Van der Vart, Van Persie and I suppose Dirk Kuyt in there too.

Definitely a tournament winning team, if they can overcome their defensive frailties (not evident yet, but they are frail at the back).. and really group together. They did well against Denmark, and I know tougher opposition could expose them at the back...

But yes, I think they can go far.

Elia played great but too bad he only played for the last 30 minutes.

Listen Jay, I think we should not underestimate the underdogs in the groups because like we have seen against Spain, Germany "Der Manschaft" and England is that teamspirit is stronger than million dollar players. Am I right?

Then he waffled something along the lines of "Not true fans or not real fans" or something, i cant remember.

I would say a lot of those booing are real or true fans. I mean, they have took time off work, travelled thousands of bloody miles to see their team turn in an absolute shambles of a performance so they have every right to express their opinion.

If Rooney and Man Utd turned in a performance like that at old trafford then they would be booed off the park there aswell

        I do agree with this.

        These are REAL fans.

Most, not all but most, of them have spent hundreds and thousands of pounds to travel to S. Africa to support England. I can understand the frustration.

        Having said that...

Our country needs support. Not boo's.

If Rooney and Man Utd turned in a performance like that at old trafford then they would be booed off the park there aswell
        I don't agree.

I have seen some pretty shambolic, disgraceful performances from my beloved team (Man Utd)... and we have never booed the players.. it's not in our blood. Sorry but it's not.

Well, i was at old trafford a few years back when they drew 0-0 with Newcastle (yes, unfortunatley for me, i am a newcastle fan) and you played like ****e, we should have had a penalty when howard took out shearer but you don't get pens at old trafford  and when the final whistle went there was certainly booing and it certainly did not come from the Newcastle fans.

I also seem to remember on more than 1 occasion, Chelsea beating you 3-0 and there was booing then, and when Liverpoop turned you over 4-1 a couple of seasons ago.

I appreciate it may just have been a small minority booing (unlike England last night) which was heard more clearly on the TV

Well here's my radical plan. Bench Rooney, Gerrard and Terri for the first half of the next game. Piss 'em off, make 'em mad, maybe they'll play better. England can't play any worse.

Japan and Holland should be a good game. Japan 2-1 over Holland.

Just saw the first half BUT it seems to me it was NOT a England problem - just a great game by Algeria.

They run more, they pressed England's midfield, they got a lot of second balls and they did a clever game.

    Pretty impressive.

    Now we have:

    Slovenia 4 points
    USA 2 points
    England 2 points
    Algeria 1 point

    This is getting funny...

Thanks for starting this thread. I am a big world cup football fan. I have even started a website just for the fun of it - WorldCupFootballers.com

This World Cup has been a mixture pf surprises, low scores, upsets and disappointments:
    Spain 0 - 1 Switzerland
    France 0 - 2 Mexico
    Germany 0 - 1 Serbia
    Portugal 0 - 0 Ivory Coast
    England 0 - 0 Algeria

Goals scored after the first 16 games:
    WC2010 - 25
    WC2006 - 39
    WC2002 - 46

Holland are really looking like the stronger team here.

Japan seem to be waiting to hit them on the break. RVP looks immense as ever and could be the deciding factor in this game, considering overall it has been a fairly poor game.

Its been a strange world cup so far for me. A lot of the games have been quite poor with most teams playing rather poorly, obviously with a few exceptions.

I think a lot of the goalkeeping errors are down the the jubilani ball being used...

The Holland game was a bit anti-climax. I really though they would step it up a gear..

But a 1 - 0 win is great for them!

    Ghana Vs Australia right now.

Harry Kewell has been sent off for an intentional hand ball on the goal line.

Ghana equalised from the resulting penalty......

Anelka has been a class act and in the french squad since 1998 yet strangely, this was the first time he was ever selected for a world cup finals squad and what a total crap way for it to end considering he probably won't be in the next world cup due to his age

The Brazil game should be a real corker... and Italy, too.

      Beers at the ready folks!!
Will be watching Brazil vs Ivory Coast. I'm hoping for a win for Ivory Coast with Drogba netting the winning goal.

    WOWZAH!!!

New Zealand have taken the lead

    Italy 0 - 1 New Zealand

A little over 5 minutes into the game. That'll boost confidence among them.

Italy were worried about defensive frailties from set-pieces and they have been found out. Free kick into the box... New Zealand take the lead

Luis Fabiano scores twice as Brazil - who have Kaka sent off - beat Ivory Coast 3-1 to reach the knockout stages.

    - - - Brazil Through to the knockout stages.

I didn't think Brazil looked at their greatest either, but for once it felt almost welcome to see a predictable result and have both teams playing fairly true to their usual form. This tournament has had quite a 'Twilight Zone' feel about it ("Do not adjust your set. There really is a bird perched comfortably on the back of the net we should have been hammering, and it's about to start a spot of nest-building in the goal mouth") and in a lot of ways it has not felt like the World Cup at all. I really wanted the Ivory Coast to bag this one, but Brazil wins, all is well with the world and it's not upside down after all.

Having said that, the Ref who sent Kaka off must be gifted with unearthly powers if he really believes that he can see out of his left ear.

      So true.

I think most people would agree, it's been a very...ummm... weird world cup. Twilight zone type feel is a great way to describe it.

I will like to think so but with fifa who know's.

I would like to see the ivory coast player get a yellow card added to his name for simulation. It was a disgrace holding his face the way he did. Reminds me of Rivaldo in the 2002 world cup when the turkish player kicked the ball back at him, it hit his knees yet he went down holding his face and the turkey player saw red. Utterly shameful.

Or what about when bilic went down holding his face in 98 and got blanc sent off and he missed the final?

I think their appeal system is set up better now though, well, i hope it is anyway

Well all these bookings and sendings off are spoiling the whole tournament for me. Why on earth yet another player has felt the need to go down holding his face (Chile player) when replays show the swiss player Behrami clearly does not catch him in the face.

Its play acting simply to get an apponent sent off to gain an advantage but all it normally does is spoil the game from the fans point of view

LOL.. a few of these have been doing the rounds...

        For example:

        - Three hours of football and Robert Green is still England's top scorer.

        - I can't believe we only managed a draw against a rubbish team we should easily have beaten. . . . I'm ashamed to call myself Algerian

        - What do you call an Englishman in the knockout stages of the World Cup?

        A referee.

I missed the Portugal v North Korea game due to best mate dragging me out shopping, it sounded like it was well worth watching. I did manage to see the second goal by developing a sudden interest in the price of flat screen tellys in Asda - it must have been getting on for the sixty minute mark by then, so the Portugese were evidently very busy in the last half hour. Well done, Portugal.

Spain were pretty tidy - I hate to say it, but I enjoyed watching them play more than I enjoyed watching England pretending to try to. The kick that Pique got in the gob looked nasty though. He's lucky he wasn't spitting his front teeth out.

I have been trying to think positive about England (unbeaten in the last two games!), but it has got a bit harder after seeing Capello's interview in which he said that John Terry made a 'big mistake' with his comments during the weekend's press conference. Capello looked like he had 'stubborn' written all over him, as if he'd balk at the idea of making any changes - however necessary - if it appeared there was even the slightest chance that it looked like lesser mortals may have influenced his strategy as a result. It would seem that a post mortem consisting of watching the first half of the Algeria game and then going off for dinner is expected to be enough to change the disastrous course we're on. Right.

'Unbeaten in the last two games... unbeaten in the last two games...'

Haha just like me, you have your England blinkers on

I'm actually pretty confident that England will turn in an impressive performance and get a few goals to keep the fans happy.

If they manage that and get out the group with 5 points then job done as far as i'm concerned.

Looking back through the years we have never really set the world alight with the group games have we? 2006 we won 2 and drew 1 but only scored 4 goals in the process, 2002 wasn't much different with only 1 win, 2 draws and only 2 golas scored if i remember correctly although the group opposition in 2002 was a hell of a lot harder than this world cup (on paper anyway)

If France don't score today then they will not have scored a goal in the last 2 world cups that have been staged in none european countries.

In fact, their last world cup goal in a none european country was in mexico 1986 although to be fair, they didn't qualify for USA 94

That's happened before to them. In 98 they were champions, 2002 they were sent home early.

At least this time they scored a goal.

Can't get out to the pub today as am home alone with the kids later because husband is away for the day. He was born the day after England last won the World Cup and we're always joking with him that we've been jinxed ever since, so maybe his absence will be no bad thing

Fortunately the schools around here are turfing out early due to the match and so nobody will miss anything because of the afternoon school run. The letter sent out to the parents states 'We appreciate the fact that families will want to watch this crucial game together...'. A friend on the inside tells me that this translates as 'We appreciate the fact that we're supposed to be teaching, but it's crucial we watch this game'

    COME ON ENGLAND!!!

The England team to face Slovenia has been announced:

James, Johnson, A Cole, Upson, Terry, Barry, Milner, Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney, Defoe.

    I'm a little bit concerned that this team sets us out for a 4 - 4 - 2 formation.

    BUT

    It could look like this:

    James

    Johnson Upson Terry A Cole

    Milner Lampard Barry Gerrard

    Defoe

    Rooney

I really wish we would have seen Joe Cole today, with Gerrard supporting Roone, but it is not to be.

But if we'd finished top, the winner of Uruguay vs. South Korea would have been England's opposition after the next round.

      No.

The winner of group c plays 2nd in group d. 2nd in c plays winners group d.

So, at this stage at least it looks like England will meet Germany in the next round. Good luck with that one.

I knew exactly what you meant John

I would have fancied England chances against either Uruguay or South Korea in the quarters if we got that far but fair play to USA for knocking us down to 2nd in the group.

I'm kinda glad they qualified aswell afterall, i think they played the best football in the group games

Oh yeah, and go Ghana as well.

Congrats to England (someone must've got them a book on how to play football in between Algeria and Slovenia) and the US.

Ah, no problems WP. I can't change anything by wishing that England had topped the group.

No he shouldn't. The FA should be ashamed of themselves for sending a side to South Africa who never looked like they deserved to be there.

I'll shout that last bit so it registers.

AT NO POINT IN THE TOURNAMENT DID ENGLAND LOOK LIKE THEY DESERVED TO BE THERE.

Loyalty is one thing. Blind loyalty is amother.

Now before you hit the keyboard and spew venom at me, stop. All that anger should be directed at English Football's Powers That Be.

Or I guess you can live in denial and blame me (and everyone else) for a dismal performance. Heck, even the Kiwis put England to shame as far as performances go.

Germany played exactly the same way as they did against Australia (and dished out a similar drubbing). Magnificent to watch. Each time Germany passed to a teammate, the player who passed it ran into space to receive it back. Exactly the sort of stuff you would show to kids when teaching them how to play the game.

And now on to THAT goal, or should I say NON-goal. I'm sure the Germans will look at it as being revenge for THAT goal in the 1966 Final. Karma if you like.

Anyway, after rearranging my sleeping habits to watch the game live down under, I'm as mad as hell at England. I was expecting the "Clash Of The Titans", and instead got "Clash Of The Teutons And The Tits".

From Robert Green to tonight's "performance", England's campaign was at best lacklustre, and at worst a complete joke.

At least the comedy industry in England will get a boost from it.

Anyway, at least the Germany/Argentina clash will be the game of the tournament (so far).

Whoever wins that one WILL win the final.

Going on your own comment here is the reason why we were defeated by the germans.

Rooney playing left flank and not having other players such as gerrard,Heskey,Lampard or carragher in full support behind leaving the back 4 to deal with the german attack.

Trying to play intercontential 442 tactics when its known england should of stuck to standard 424 or long ball defense like how some teams such as liverpool,Manchester united and chelsea play every week in and out of premiership however capello decided to keep the vital players on different positions which outposted us as vunerable to the german attack. You can clearly see this for your self in the game on you tube. its was the question of the back 4 defence being exploited to the german advantage.

Agentina is going to play well but i presume the bigger teams such as brazil an germany are going to be the top 4 teams.

Rant over! Sorry for it but England players get paid a shedload of money to play professional week in week out,

yet that was one of the worst tactical and teamwork i have ever seen in the world cup stage.

If you can find the last team that came back from 2-0 in less than 60 seconds- with 2 well-taken goals- then maybe you have a point.

Otherwise, there's no point "shouting" about something you know little about.

I stopped watching after the fourth goal, but only to go outside and tell husband to at least wait until the corpse was cold because he was taking the flags off the car. I then went back inside to watch until the bitter end, by which time he'd taken the big flag down from the front of the house and chucked his England shirt in the wash (it's actually one that he borrowed from me, otherwise he would probably have carried out his threat to barbecue it). It was joined by the one that I'd been wearing about thirty seconds later.

The only one happy was my daughter's stuffed toy (and best friend) Piggy, who has now cast off the England garb that she was so unwillingly stuffed into (apparently her loyalties were with pork-tugal) and is now cavorting around the house in scenes of gratuitous nudity. Capello has a lot to answer for...

Between bad decisions from both of them, we lost.

Oh and Spain's goal was offside.

The tactical disposition of the team (4-3-3 but in fact was a 5-3-2) did not help a bit.

We don't know hot to play this way. HUGE mistake by Mr Queiroz.

They have a wonderful team, and this is the last chance for some of these players.

          They are very focused.

As a sidenote, Cristiano Ronaldo and some other Portuguese players are really upset with the tactical used by Mr Queiroz.

But Spain's offside goal and some other really weird decisions by the ref can't be put aside to analyze the game.

You have mentioned this offside goal quite a few times now, when and who exactly was offside?

I'm not trying to be funny with you Fernando, but ive watched the goal numerous times now and i don't see the offside at all?

            Kris

Edit: Ive just watched the goal again (i didn't actually see the goal live thanks to my youngest child playing up) and i see where you think he's offside. I didn't even notice Xavi flick it on to villa the first few times a saw it.

When that pass is made, Villa is slightly ahead of the Portugal defender but there is no clear daylight which in most cases in England, if the linesman see theres no daylight then no offside is given although there is nothing in FIFA's rules which say they should do this.

So according to FIFA's own rules, he is offside.

If you look at the linesman though he is slightly behind play so i bet he did not see Villa ahead of the defender when the flick pass was made (he may not have even seen Xavi's pass)

Problem is : FIFA TV broadcast director DIDN'T show that replay - they always do - cause they knew that would mean a 3rd IRREGULAR goal in 3 important games.

That, alone, is shameful. BUT, last 15 minutes of the game, Ronaldo had 3 bad tackles near Spain's defense, and not a single one was given by the ref.

And only one of them had a replay showing Spanish player pushing him to the ground...

As I said before, this is just football and Mr Queirós did screw up.

So... See ya again in 2012!!

As for now, Netherlands get my vote!!! Terrific team, fantastic football.

4-0 with a minute and a bit left.

    Edit: 4-0 it is.

That makes Australia's loss in the group games more respectable as well.

I know where you're coming from, WP; being completely humiliated doesn't feel so bad when everybody else's team gets the same treatment...

I think it was in another thread where I said that the German team had impressed me from their very first game. I only wish I'd been enough of a gambler to go to the betting shop and put some money on them. I'd like to believe that the Spanish and the Dutch might give Germany a run for their money, but after watching Germany beating the crap out of the Argentineans, I can't be sure that the same won't happen again.

Meanwhile, the England coach is rumoured to be throwing out some "sacred cows" from the England squad...

LOL. Yeah, that must mean that Australia are on the same level as Argentina.

Seriously though, the Germans played much the same way against Australia, England and Argentina. Each player constantly running into space to receive a pass. The passer then running into a gap to take the ball back. Exactly the sort of thing that should be shown to kids when teaching them the game.

I didn't notice it as much in the other two games, but against Argentina, their defence was impeccable as well. As soon as Messi got anywhere within range, before he had a chance to take aim, there were at least 2 Germans standing in front of him. Once again, the sort of stuff that should be taught to kids.

        Oh well, bring on 2014.

          Absolutely true, WP.

I can't remember how many times during the England-Germany game Steven Gerrard tried to score a goal from either an impractical distance or an impossible angle, when there were other England players in a much better position to put the ball into the net. And ultimately the whole team payed the price for the glory-seeking of a few individuals. As an Italian friend of mine once described Italy's crashing out of a major tournament: "We have 11 geniuses, but no team".

By contrast, Germany doesn't rely upon a few wonder-boys; they've put together an entire squad of team-workers who are happy to let others have the ball or score the goals for the greater good. And they're still in the competition, while "the 4 best players in the world" have all gone home.

I think it is now looking pretty ominous for South American countries, not only in this World Cup but in future as well. When almost all your players play in Europe, they take after Europe's game and Europe knows everything about their players. Morover, it must be more difficult for a team to get together and train.

    oK...

    So, something just hit me.

We went into this World Cup with the 4 best players in the world...

The generally accepted 4 in the media were:

    Ronaldo, Messi, Rooney and Kaka.

If anyone looks at this World Cup as a measuring stick, we can say that those 4 players have really hurt their status, right?

    None of them have performed.

Can we put it all down to a lack of support, the kind of support they receive at club level?...

Has the dynamic of football across the world changed SO much that these 4 players have been crowded out by methodical, steady football?.

When we come out of this World Cup, are we going to be talking about others in the same light that we put on these 4?....

This is the difference between a superstar and a legend. If ever there was a one man team that won the World Cup, it was Maradona and Argentina in 1986. Not only that, he did the same with Naples at league level in Italy.

Thats funny Jay, i was pretty much just having the same coversation with the missus. I think the only player that has been hyped up (not as much as the big four) and still performed is Villa of Spain.

As for why the others have not performed, who knows? People have said Rooney and Kaka were both unfit going into the tournament, especially Kaka.

Maybe it was pressure as all 4 teams rely so heavily on the mentioned players. Having said that both Messi and Ronaldo hadn't scored a goal for their countries for ages going into south africa so surely tehy don't rely on them that much?. I'm pretty sure Ronaldo hadn't scored for Portugal since 2008.

I kinda felt sorry for Messi. As soon as it became apparent that he was about to recieve the ball there was atleast 3 players surrounding him, yet, he had still had the most shots out of all the players in the tournament so far.

Its wierd how all 4 have under performed

when the next world cup comes around, 3 of those 4 big players will only be approaching their supposed peak, or at their peak. Ronaldo will be 29, Rooney 28 and Messi 27 whereas Kaka will be 32. By no means past it but in theory, he will have passed his better years.

Shame with it been in Brazil aswell

The surprise to me is the reluctance of FIFA adopting instant replay. It seems like these folks do not enjoy modern technoloy. Might as well leave your GPS at home and use the worn out key map to get to where you are going.

They've been very fussy about their Refs in this World Cup though. None of them are even allowed on the pitch unless they can manage without their guide dogs for a full ninety minutes. Impressive.

Nop, Germany will win today's game against Spain, and then, they will lose to Holland in the final.

        Thats why I said:

I was talking about the Dutch.

        Edit to add:

Heck, why would a Portuguese wish for Spain to win anything? LMAO :p

Hehe,... I think Fernando meant the creativity, passion and power of the Dutch team ;-)

Being a (proud) Dutchmen myself, I think that this is the first time in a long time that the Dutch team has passion and power. They really act as a team now. Their place in the finals is well deserved and fought for. I hope we will face the Germans Sunday, it'll be a great match!

        Looking forward to it.

Two cracking goals in this game.

Forlan probably got a little lucky with the Goalkeeper and his positioning, but it was still a great strike....

      3 - 2 to Holland

A few great goals and some nice footie to watch, sorry you missed it!

Uruguay got their 2nd in like 92nd minute, a little earlier and they might have had the momentum for another and taken this into extra time.

Both teams played great World Cup footie!

    Yes, Spain did beat Germany.

But a Spain vs. Netherlands final is good because it means that the World Cup must now go to a nation that has never won it before!
