..and where would you send them?

Finally, are there any websites or organizations which aid in this?

Doesn't this defeat the point of 'charity work' ??

How exactly is that? Maybe you read the question wrong or I expressed it wrong (most likely). This doesn't mean would you PAY somebody to do charity work, that kind of does defeat the point.

What I mean is would you sponsor somebody in terms of covering the costs required to volunteer, like for passport (if necessary) etc.

      Sorry for mix up.

*should probably be in off-topic forum too* eek.

I would. Then I would send them to the very nearest point of need. It may be the local downtown soup kitchen, or it may start with one or more of their own family members.

In my humble opinion, charity should start from the closest point of need and then be worked out to the farthest points of need. Less expensive, and just makes more sense.

I do agree with this. Helping your own country, family and those closest to you.

But I also believe that places like Africa need far more support than the UK, and there are far more people in dire need of help.

What I don't get is how some get all patriotic saying you should support your own country first..even though you were born there out of chance. Regardless, my view is to go where the support is most needed - near or far.

lol that's my misuse of the word 'sponsor' - you would actually be donating, though I can see the additional incentive a sponsorship would provide.

To be honest though, this wouldn't be targeted at people interested in advertising - more for the selfless type of people - to match the attitude of the person volunteering.

..and yes, I do mean give up their life. Like drop their job/work/home and move away from their family and friends.

Have you never heard of the Peace Corps
There are plenty of charities out there.
    Just join one.

Here is one my friend is involved with. Youth Challenge International
I just donated to help her go someplace.

And pretty much no one goes on mission for life. It's very uncommon.

    Interesting question..

As someone already mentioned, there are people in 3rd world countries who are far worse off than us! I think they need help first than we could look look at our own countries.

    It happens all the time.

Full-time missionaries (we have a few here on the WF) often look for outside aid if they can't pay their own way.

There's nothing at all wrong with this. There are many people who'd like to help <insert need or cause>, but are unwilling or unable to give their lives over to that cause. By providing financial backing for those who are called to give their lives, those who can't are still able to help in some way.

Again, often these outside "donations" mean the difference between going or staying.

Churches and individuals do sponsor people who are willing to devote their time to helping others. However, the idea of paying someone's expenses and then telling them where to go to do the 'good work' doesn't sound right. Most people who desire this kind of work may already know where their skills and knowledge can best be used.

Where a person goes to help depends on his knowledge of the people and their culture, ability to communicate in the language, etc.

Many hospitals in third world countries, wildlife centers and other service programs conducted by those who spend their life (or part of it) helping others operate only with donations.
