I'll bet it doesn't work. .xxx will become a ghetto that is too easy to block and avoid. They will keep using .com and certainly won't give up their existing addresses.

EDIT: here is a very good article from PCWorld that puts things in a better perspective. It may be the biggest buyers of .xxx domains are legitimate companies like Disney.

I thought that's why we were doing this: so you could easily identify the pornographic domains.

That goes both ways, of course... you know it's porn, so if you don't want porn, you don't go there and maybe you block it at the router. But at the same time, if you want to go get you some pr0n, hey presto there it all is!

Hehehe. I said "goes both ways"

You're assuming that site owners will willingly give up traffic and live in a ghetto blocked by filters. Not a chance. They will make certain they are available to any customer through any firewall.

Yes, unbelievably, people pay for porn. $2.9 billion in the U.S. and $4.9 billion globally. Each year.

With that much money at stake, would you voluntarily move your sites to a ghetto?

This will only make ICANN money, no one else. It's the only reason they approved it.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

I thought the .xxx domains idea got shot down like a year ago or so.

Several groups persisted until ICANN saw how much money they could make. It was approved this week.
