  • My kind of thread! I like British beers so usually I get:

    Newcastle
    Harp

I've been getting into Speckled Hen. I had that when I visited England and now my local liquor store here in Minnesota, USA carries it!

    • Gary, there is nothing like a A&W when served like that.
There are ZERO A&Ws where I live, so when I saw one a few weeks back I insisted we stopped so I could get a nice cold one.

Turns out they no longer serve it like in the picture, instead it was in a regular paper cup filled with ice. What a waste. I didn't even drink it.

A&W needs to be served ice cold out of the draught and in a chilled glass, just like the other beers!

  • O'Doull's Amber, in an ice-cold bottle.

  • I've always hated beer. lol. Until I went to Germany. Then I had two kinds of
beer that tasted incredible - good. The first was when a bunch of us were sent
to some small town to pick up the million pieces of a jet that crashed near the
town. Some old guy wanted this chunk of jet removed from his yard. We put it
on the truck. Then he brought two bottles of some beer out to me and another
guy. We went into the garage and drank it. Incredible taste. The next beer was
in Trier Germany in some old tavern underneath some old building. There were
huge wooden casks with the beer in it. Dark beer, sweet, and served warm. It
    was also incredibly good.

I never thought warm beer could taste good. Hell, I never thought any beer could
    taste good.
  • Depends...

But, if I had to choose it would be Christian Morlein Dopple Dark.
But, since they no longer make it, the closest thing I've found is Killian's Irish Red.

(Sidenote: If you have to put Lime in it, it isn't beer).

  • Tennent's Super
  • Total best for me are:

Bass ( especially if you find an old-fashioned pub that will serve it flat from the jug - there is one in Kegworth, Nottinghamshire (it took 3 hungry people to drag me out of there as the place didnt serve food and we had met for lunch , lol)). I once had a pint of Bass in Long Beach, CA. I can report that it doesn't travel well.

Batemans XXB. I know (and am related by marriage) to the family. Consistently good performers in CAMRA awards

    Adnams

Banks's - Especially the Mild (if they still make it)

Ansells Bitter (are they still going - fond memories of my youth! I aspired to be an 'Ansell's Bitterman')

99% of people reading this post will not know what the heck I am on about...hopefully there are one or two who will maybe concur. If there are...become a friend of mine on this forum!

Alas, where I live, I mainly only get the choice of Amstel, Mythos & Heineken. My fave lager beer is Carlsberg Export (I live in the only place on earth where its unavailable ) but, disregarding Heineken as total pisswater, I sink many an Amstel or Mythos depending on my mood. Usually Amstel in the winter and Mythos in the summer for some unknown reason.

I have a 'buy me a beer' donation button on my personal blog which is a photo of a Mythos bottle, so I guess I favour Mythos at the moment.

    Hope that answers your question.

    Now I am thirsty!

    • Years ago, I used to work behind the bar in a pub where we sold this stuff (it was practically considered a hanging offence by the locals if a glass of it was served up with even a single bubble floating on top), and I got to like it - muchly One year, after indulging in a few glasses once my shift was finished, I volunteered to peel a bucket of sprouts in the kitchen for the pub's Christmas dinner, and ended up alone in there with a ferocious Alsatian guard dog, casually feeding him turkey scraps from my fingers. He was so seriously scary that he was usually kept locked out in the back yard for good reason, but had managed to cut loose that day. The turkey incident was the talk of the bar for ages after - even I couldn't believe I'd done it the next morning. Such is the mighty power of Bass

I grew up with wonderful home-brewed beer that would never taste quite the same from one week to the next, so I'm quite fussy about beer. Okay, reasonably fussy. Just a bit fussy? The one thing I really don't like is beer that comes from a can, especially if it's being drunk while it's still in the can. Beer is not meant to taste of tin. I probably like lager best of all, but don't rate Budweiser much and think there is nothing about Stella to justify the higher price. Current favourite isn't lager though, it's Gem, a beer brewed just up the road and discovered by my youngest son.

Bath Ales : Gem : Our premium amber ale

So much beer, so little time
  • For immediate refreshment, ice cold Tsing Tao
To spend the evening getting hosed - Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale
  • Haven't touched a beer since 2005, but I still get days when I would give my right nut for an ice cold rolling rock....

    • Friend, it's time to give up that nut and drink that
      ice cold brew.

  • Little Creatures - Bright Ale
  • Guinness.

    Anything else isn't really beer.
    • [1] reply
    • Hey, the way to top that so-to-say is to get Guinness actually in Ireland. It was worth the trip to Dublin that I made once just for the beer. I don't know why it's different: maybe it doesn't travel well but it's a Totally different taste. And the way it's pulled - there's an entire ritual to it. Take a trip there sometime if you haven't before.

It's worth the price of a six-pack just for the bottles.

    • Being of Irish extraction, I am fond of a nice pint of Guinness or a glass is nice too. In terms of beer, there is a beer my local off licence used to sell, they since stopped for reasons unknown, but it has a laughing monk on the bottle and it had a honey-ish, but not sweet, mead kind of flavour

It was a bot of an aquired taste to be honest but if anyone knows it can they let me know the name.

I saw there is one of those 1001 beer books out now, you know the "1001 books to read before you die", "movies, albums etc" Now they have a 1001 beers to try before you die, which I am going to have a look at. I would say 1001 beers would def kill you though lol sorry

  • Adnams real ale.
  • Well I'd rather prefer Heineken, Miller or Mariachi but nothing else... Unfortunately you can only find Heineken in Austria nor Miller neither Mariachi.
  • I'm quite fond of an ice cold pint of Stella Artois

    But

    Speckled Hen

    Guinness

    Carlsberg

All get a vote too. I really can't pick one.

    So much to decide.

Weather, mood, atmosphere, day of the week etc

I'm a brandy man at heart, though.
  • When I used to drink, it was Molson/Bud Ice.

I preferred to drink to get drunk. So the most pack for the punk without hard liquor was the key. Now, I can't really be around any beer. All reeks to hell. Especially skunk beer.
  • A good pint of Wife Beater (Stella Artois) goes down a treat.....

    • My friend once tried to drink a bear. It was a closed casket funeral.
  • Although, I'm not much of a beer man. I prefer tasting some of these:
Skol Super, Tennets, Stella Artois, Carling Extra Cold (and A&W Root Beer lol)
  • The beer from the Philippines called "red horse" and the Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel from Denmark.

  • My goto beer when I go out is usually Fat Tire.

If I am looking for a treat I will go out and buy a Fin De La Monde or a DogFish Head 120 minute IPA. Amazing stuff.
  • My current favorite is Camo XXX Black Ice - not too many beers can give you hangover from drinking one tall can.
  • There was this french beer I recently tried and it was surprisingly light and refreshing - perfect thirst quencher...

Let me get the name.... *googles* Ah yes Kronenbourg 1664.

    Very nice
  • Stella Artios and Rolling Rock.
  • 1) Yuengling Lager (Pennsylvanian Beer!)
    2) Red Stripe (Jamaican Beer!)

Truthfully, I'll drink just about anything.

I'm actually really not much of a drinker.

    That sounds contradictory... LOL

  • I Never drunk beer....
  • Edk,

I would agree up to a point but I have had some really crap Guinness in Dublin, as well as good ones. For a very good Guinness I can highly recommend An SibĂn on the main street of Cavan.

I once had a very good Guinness in Milan which took me by surprise a bit.

I have also had countless really good ones from my fridge.

  • I still like Stella and Carlsberg.

  • I'm not a drinker but if I were to choose what beer I like guess it would be San Might Light. LOL.
  • Depends on where I am. Should be draft, as close to the source as possible (the reason why microbrews are usually good), poured by an expert, stored in a fairly deep cellar (preferably stone-lined) and with compressed air (rather than carbon dioxide) used to pump it.

    • The UK's East Midlands is a haven for 'real ale' and I love real ale, so what a great place to live!

My faves are Bass, Ruddles County & Marston's Pedigree, but there are loads of small breweries round here with great beers (some with very funny names). My favourite beer name is 'Old Fart' from the Robinwood brewery. What's yours?

(The pub in Kegworth mentioned earlier is the Cap & Stocking and the Bass is divine.)
  • Well I am partial to Guinness, and have managed many a good session at Twickers. Do like a beer called The Blandford Fly as well. Its made around the Dorset area in the UK. Tastes like adult ginger beer.
I live in France now, so just a memory.
