Do You Treat Attractive Warriors Differently?

It's no secret that attractive people get treated differently than less attractive people. It's always been that way. They get preferential treatment in school, the 9-5 workplace, as well as in the super glamorous and superficial entertainment industry.

But what about in marketing forums like this one? Do you find yourself responding to other warriors, not so much based on the competence of their content, but rather the level of their attractiveness?

Guys, do you find yourself flirting with that sexy female warrior, hoping she flirts back? And ladies, do you go out of your way to make a comment on that cute male warrior's post?

And are you more critical of someone, if you don't particularly like the way he or she looks?

It's a natural instinct I think. Since I don't know if someone's picture is of them or just one they picked up, I don't assume they look like their avatar.

I will say that in real life, yes... I am more patient with a beautiful woman that cuts me off while driving than a less attractive one. Kick me, I'm human.

In real life, yes I do, unfortunately... I can't help it.

My fiancee knows it, and she knows it is harmless.

On forums?... No. Most of those "hot chick" avatars, and yes, I mean in this very forum... are a cover for some random dude trying his luck.

        FYI, The first symptom:

        Conversation
HER: Awwhaa, I seen you look at her!
YOU: What? I was looking at the ...

HER: Then Why did you turn away so fast when you noticed that I had looked?
        YOU: Ummm, I didn't look away ...

HER: Yes you did! You looked ...
YOU: OK, I did look but ...

SIDE BAR: NEVER EVER use "but" to extend your sentence to it's conclusion
when dealing with a woman. She may not be a marketer although she will also pick up on
KeyWords when it comes to another woman or if her Domain is threatened. Trust me on that one!

          What an, um, interesting thread.

Actually, I treat everybody the same until they treat me differently. If you're
nice to me, I'm nice to you. If you're not nice to me, I'm not nice to you.

I never was a superficial person. Some of my biggest and meanest knock
down drag out fights, in the real world, were with some very good looking
people...especially women. Conversely, I've had some of the nicest
conversations with folks who would probably be finalists on "America's
          Most Homely" and visa versa.

Again, if you're nice to me, I'm nice to you.

As far as David's question... Online I do not think anyone has the certainty that the person they are doing business is good looking or not... Offline, well that is a whole different story. I know for a fact that my husband, as shy as he can be, always got his ways with women. I do not understand why... Could it be because he is just so handsome or is it his charm? LOL

To be honest, I haven't noticed anyone treating me any different but I don't know for sure! I think the drawback in my case is that a lot of women are afraid to flirt with me because I'm... well, basically I'm jailbait!

In real life probably but not on a marketing forum, I am here to learn and spread my knowledge. If the ugliest girl in the world wants to share their knowledge with me, I would thank her just as much as a stunning looking girl. When you learn something, you want the best way to learn, if that comes from someone un-attractive, I will take un-attractive and has the answers over attractive and with some of the answers.

Possibly. I did once have a VERY nice dream involving a Warrior regular (who will forever remain nameless - *blush* ) and so I know I do notice people on that level sometimes. I don't think I'd treat people any differently because of it, but I think that kind of thing is human nature anyway and so I wouldn't rule the idea out entirely.

What came to mind on reading the question though was the memory of my schooldays and how seldom it was that me or any of my hormonal mates fancied the same lad. Even today one of my sisters is with a guy who she thinks is model material - I think he looks like he's been hit by a dustcart reversing at speed, leaving the dustcart looking like it came off worse. There is probably not a person on this forum who doesn't have someone somewhere sighing dreamily at the thought of them, and I think that where there is a lust-fuelled bias and people are being treated differently, people are being treated differently equally.

It's not just lust that makes me check myself to see if I'm being fair, either. My maternal instinct is often responsible for a bit of bias too. I first noticed this with Wayne Rooney (curiously, my eldest son is often mistaken by other people for him). Every time Wayne Rooney comes out on the football pitch I feel a need to hug him, check that he's got sufficient clean underwear for the week and make sure that he's had a proper breakfast. These are most unlike the favourable feelings inspired by Vinny Jones or Alan Shearer...

You will be favoured on here by someone whatever you look like, even if you look like you've only just left your teenage acne behind and could do with a decent bacon sandwich

For all we know, Alexa could be a 400 pound New Yorker with a bad lisp and tender feet.

The thing that matters is Alexa shows how smart she is in her posts. She comments on the threads she has experience in and shows that experience.

Someone to listen to regardless of what her avatar looks like. I suspect she gets more following her because of her posts but maybe a few from her avatar.

His beefy blogs and stylish sig,

Was when he would be posting

                But he did not reciprocate
And soon he let him know
That all he saw him fit for
                Was lusty W.S.Ohhh...

'I'm not like that' he thought, dismayed
And he no longer felt attraction

Very creative, Diana. Now, I'm an old married guy so don't take this as flirting with you, but I am using your post to make a point - creativity is also a very attractive quality.

Now, if I were younger and not married, then I'd be tempted to flirt with you.

I really appreciate everyone responding to this thread with the silliness with which it was intended. Thanks for being such good sports, and having a little fun with this thread, which is exactly what I intended.

Every once in a while, it's nice to be silly for no apparent reason.

That's the secret sauce for me....I'm avatar neutral which basically is equal to banner blindness or adsense avoidance.

However, there is nothing more stimulating then an informative post that explains a new method, strategy or technique that could possibly change your financial future in a postive manner.

You comment seems to imply that people who don't admit to a bias are not honest.

I try to treat everyone based on the content of their post and the content of their character, but if I sometimes fail at that, it's probably the other way around. I would pay closer attention to the words of someone I didn't find physically attractive because I wouldn't be distracted by her looks.

Well if Riley can make a beard out of stapling hamsters to his chin I may try a new wig of chinchillas.

Another Disclaimer: There was no stapling of chinchillas in the making of this post. I used super glue.

I am in that niche. My alias is David Deangelo and I wear the chinchilla when I work the seminars.

Sure it takes some hair products to whip the chinchilla in shape. Surprisingly it stays styled for a good 8 hours.

I do have to allow the chinchilla proper 15 minute breaks and a lunch due to labor laws.

Hey Greg, since you want to get serious, is anyone really all that ugly? A smile makes people more attractive. A pleasant personality makes people more attractive. A good attitude makes people more attractive.

It's kind of funny how much more attractive people become when we look for the good in them instead of grading them on physical appearance.

On the other hand, it doesn't matter how attractive someone is physically if their personality and attitude are routinely caustic and egotistical, their attractiveness disappears in a hurry.

Well you're getting way too deep for me. Nobody should be called ugly, except in the deeper sense-ugly ideas, ugly intentions, etc. Unfortunately, it is a largely superficial world we live in, and the reality is, we all know what is considered ugly, and what is beautiful-to some extent, that's due to genetics, but also culturally programmed-look at the images we are constantly bombarded with.

I personally had my life affected by "looksism". My father had terrible skin as a teen, and moderately bad skin as an adult. He never got over the emotional toll the zits he saw every time he looked in a mirror took, as well as other peoples' reactions, as ridiculous as that sounds. It's an uncomfortable fact that most people recoil from a face filled with tiny volcanoes. Those of us that want to be decent often hide our knee jerk reaction, but don't think the person doesn't pick up on it anyway.

I agree with your points though-very true that we're all more attractive when we smile and are relaxed and pleasant. However, it's a lot harder to relax, smile, and be pleasant, when your formative years were marred by kids calling you "pizza face", and jeering at you because of your looks.

If you aren't superficial (as several people here have claimed), then you should truly be able to empathize with all the suffering endured by the "ugly", rather than simply to deny that ugly exists-and I do agree we shouldn't call people that. To act like it's just not an issue though, comes off to someone who feels the brunt of it everyday as profoundly calloused.

Whoops, there goes another hot chick with great skin-gotta go!

I hate to admit it but I'm probably going to be slightly less likely to take you seriously if you have an attractive photo (male or female).

By attractive I mean a guy showing a bare chest or a woman dressed provocatively etc etc.

But really it makes almost no difference to me.

Online I'm going to respond to you based on how well you communicate.

Your photo won't make any real difference.

The persons looks do not matter.

Was Bill Gates the sexiest man alive? Nah..

Its the way they do business what counts. I would not discriminate on the grounds of how a person looks. That is childish and pathetic

Now, having said that, it does change at least the way I talk to her about things to see an attractive avatar by her name. It's a funny thread, but a serious question worth giving some thought to. I think it is a rare and admirable person indeed that actually treats everyone equally regardless of physical attractiveness, and this applies to a lessor degree, to people of whichever gender you have no sexual attraction to; perhaps because we think some of the "mojo" will rub off on us.

To some extent (unfortunately), the mojo does rub off. Try this social experiment-notice if there's a difference in the amount of opposite sex attention you get when you hang out in public with your least attractive same sex friend, and your most attractive. I bet you get more social opportunities with the attractive one.

To the guy who said his mate knows it's "harmless", I'm not saying it's a crime; we're all human, but I'd say it's very far from harmless to the less attractive among us. It means they (notice I didn't include myself-although I've been told by girlfriends that I'm truly hideous), have to go through their entire lives being treated with less respect, less patience, getting less smiles, less approval, etc, than those that lucked out with the looks genes. For people who are extremely unattractive, it can actually destroy their lives-just watch one of those acne medicine commercials to see how much the ugly must suffer.

To Imran, that's a noble sentiment, but come on-looks don't matter? Bill Gates is an example of someone who used his head to succeed in spite of his looks, and he isn't all that ugly anyway. Yes, it's great to not discriminate, but come on; you really mean to tell us that if you're at a party and have an opening to talk to someone that looks like Brooke Burke, or the lonely girl in the corner that looks like Rosie O'Donnell, you're equally likely to decide to brighten up Rosie's day? If that's a real picture you're using, maybe you think it's not an issue because you're the beneficiary of "looksism". It's like Paris Hilton saying money isn't what really matters in life, because she has no idea what it's like to do without.

Sorry to get all serious-gotta go now, a hot babe is walking by, and I have to go chat her up.

I am female and I dont pay much attention to the photos of other members here. I am not shallow nor am I a hypocrite, I try to treat everyone fairly and looks dont persuade me one way or another. Yes I know good looking people get treated differently from the rest of us and you gotta wonder how the world got that way. Good looks dont guarantee a good, bad, smart, stupid etc. person.

Well, I'll be the odd ball here.

I definitely don't treat attractive women any differently. In fact, I'm actually more critical of really attractive women as I'll want to know if they really know their stuff.

I'm like that with them in the real world as well. It actually works in my favor as I come across different than all the other guys and it drives some of them nuts!

Now that humor has turned to flame ....
Let's all sing in harmony ... follow the bouncing ball.

    I feel pretty
    Oh so pretty
I feel pretty and witty and bright,
And I pity any girl who isn't me tonight.

    I feel charming
    Oh so charming
It's alarming how charming I feel
And so pretty that I hardly can believe I'm real.

See the pretty girl in that mirror there
Who can that attractive girl be?
    Such a pretty face
    Such a pretty dress
    Such a pretty smile
    Such a pretty me!

    I feel stunning
    And entrancing
Feel like running and dancing for joy
For I'm loved by a pretty wonderful boy!

Have you met my good friend Maria
The craziest girl on the block?
You'll know her the minute you see her
She's the one who is in an advanced state of shock

    She thinks she's in love
    She thinks she's in Spain
    She isn't in love
    She's merely insane

    It must be the heat
    Or some rare disease
    Or too much to eat
    Or maybe it's fleas

    Keep away from her
    Send for Chino
This is not the Maria we know

    Honest and pure
    Polite and refined
    Well-bred and mature

See the pretty girl in that mirror there (What mirror where?)
Who can that attractive girl be? (Which? What? Where? Whom?)
    Such a pretty face

Maybe you get to look at their direction instinctively, but in forums, you'll never know the actual avatar. Might as well read through the discussions, if its a worthwhile content , you can shift your attention on the avatar.

I tend to be very suspicious of members who try to look provocative in their Avatar. It certainly doesn't seem professional to me Though, I guess it is a form of marketing and it tends to create some sort of response in people, both good and bad.

I think it's natural to look at and pay attention to people's avatars -- it adds to the "story" you create in your mind of who that person is and what their life is like (something I didn't realize I do until I started reading Paul Myers' amazing "Power Creativity" course The Idea Spot - Practical Creativity for Immediate Results).

I'm always interested in why a person chose their avatar -- real picture of themselves or not

That's a great topic by itself.

You got people who change their avatar weekly and people who have theirs since they opened their account (Like me)

So, why did YOU choose THAT avatar?

That would make for great discussion.

It's more of a passing interest I've never pm'd anyone about it (and probably never would because that's sort of an odd thing to do), but it would be interesting to find out.

That's not a comfort zone thing for me -- it's something I would find strange if someone else was overly interested and pm'ing me about my avatar, so I wouldn't inflict that on someone else

                David,

Nah. I don't believe avatars, for one thing. Or, more precisely, I don't care about them. The exceptions are men who use a macho image and play the alpha dog routine too far, and women who use cute pics and play the flirt too heavily. Both of those are signs of games that don't belong here.

Aside from that, the majority of the sort of pics that most would consider all that attractive are of women who could be my youngest brother's daughters.

I call them giraffes. They might be interesting to look at, but I don't want to take one home.

You get used to it - especially after numerous comments on YouTube videos that aren't even intended to be suggestive.

So you might be nice to them if they've shown you preferential treatment, but you don't go way out of the way to contact them. And I typically don't discriminate against "less attractive" avatars. On WF, it's the brains and experience that count, right?

If I'm attractive, it's because that's the way I paid the illustrator to draw me.

At any rate, "attractive" is such a subjective term; some find attractive what others think should be covered with a paper bag.

Sometimes, it is hard to take some people seriously because of their avatars. This is especially true with some people that try to be "creative" with their avatars, more so than people that just use a basic head shot. Someone might write something serious, and you look at their avatar and giggle to yourself.

It makes the point in a humorous way.

A friend tried to hook me up with one of a couple of very attractive young women (24ish) he knew. When I said, "Nah. She's a giraffe," they both looked at me like I had a third ear. The punch line covered the shock, delivered a compliment, and ended the discussion with everyone in a good mood.

I'm not denying that, you are correct. I would also postulate that this is the cause of a good many divorces. People marry the outer person and not the inner person, but whether a marriage lasts or not often comes down to the inner qualities of each partner.

I had a friend in high school with the same problem. The first time you see someone like that it disrupts your version of reality. It's not hard to look past that after the initial surprise wears off. Unfortunately for the sufferer, they often never do get past the emotional scars. The same can be said for many different kinds of emotional scars.

On a forum the attitude of a reply is more telling than the avatar itself, but sometimes the reply when combined with the avatar can tell a lot. There are some avatars on this forum that make my skin crawl but not because of the the people in them are ugly, but because I assosciate the avatar with their replies.

Many people in retail make the mistake of judging a book by its cover and lose many sales when they ignore my (and pthers) presence based on appearance. I won't make the same mistake with my peers.

    Humans... are animals.

We all have instincts burned into our very core from millions of years of evolution. We're hardwired to respond better to someone that we find physically attractive. While we as a society love to preach the value of equality, the everyday reality is different.

Personally though, I believe in separating business with my personal life. No point in ruining a potential business relationship on here with a careless comment or unwanted advance.

Charles, this thread was written with tongue planted firmly in cheek. I was just looking to be silly and have a little fun, and this thing just exploded!

I too am more interested in a warrior's competence, above anything else.

I think this Warrior's personal profile provides the answer to this threads title, "Do You Treat Attractive Warriors Differently?".

I couldn't resist after so many comments about it, so I checked it out. Could only
stand to read about a dozen or so comments. Funny guys. It would be such a riot
if the person behind the pic is a guy.

The people I treat differently are the ones who do NOT have avatars. That's because I imagine those folks as wildly attractive... and then I just have to flirt.

Actually, Becky, I have a big bushy beard.

Apparently I was a bit of a catch in my younger days - I used to get asked out quite a bit.

Now I just look like Grizzly Adams.

Here's me last year, at age 42: Testimonials EADIM

I guess I'm more of a "catch and release".

Pity they skip right over the catching and jump straight to the releasing.

Yep, you probably killed her fantasy. Should have left well enough alone.

I know what you mean, Jay, but it actually could have been considered a serious marketing topic about the merits of honest self-portrayal vs. optimal market-based portrayal.

...if it would have been presented (or received) differently.

I don't have a problem with the moderators moving it, I really don't. It was never meant to be presented as a serious marketing discussion. To be honest, I'm surprised it got as much attention as it did.

The tables can actually be turned the other way. Some people actually treat attractive people worse and give them a hard time. Girls would try to smash my face into the concrete in high school because they thought I was looking at their boyfriend. (this was 15 years ago) but I still remember it well. I have also expereinced very catty jealous behavior from women over the years. I am not even that good looking. I am very tall which means I stand out, but I am also very shy. Some women feel threatened by me though.

Hmmmm...interesting. Sarah, why do you think women are threatened by you? Because of your looks and height? Or because of how their men react to you?
