WordPress Spammer Strangeness

This strikes me as odd.

Yesterday, I shut down one of my WordPress blogs and redirected it to a different site (non-WordPress) where I moved what little content I had on the WP blog.

It didn't have much content but it had a little. (Very little: two quality articles plus a welcome message.)

I have backlinks to that site. Not many, but enough that it can be found.

It was up and running for over a year. In all that time, there were maybe a half dozen spam comments.

I have another WordPress blog that's been under construction for ages. No content except for the generic WordPress welcome message. This blog has been active for a little over a year. There are no backlinks to it. I never linked to the site anywhere because there was nothing on it.

Yet, that blog gets hit by spam comments on a daily basis. They all go into moderation so none of them display on the site, but the spambots hit it daily.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Could be a fluke placement on an Xrumer list. One time I had a mail server put on an open relay list (relay was NOT open) and got hammered for months. Only satisfaction was that about 60 million spams were never delivered.

For clarification, I have several blogs that get hammered by spam comments on a daily or near daily basis.

How that one slipped through the cracks (two actually), I have no idea. But, I'd certainly like to know.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I heard some scripts bypass Akismet or any antispam, better not allow comments on your blog/posts to avoid it.
