I'm doing a big project right now which requires me to login to a VPN network. This network uses software which conflicts with ZoneAlarm software, so I had to uninstall my firewall.

I've tried 2 other firewalls which uses different system file names but each time I try to load my VPN my system crashes.

So basically I'm stuck with Windows Firewall until the end of this project.

My concern is that I've noticed things that I don't want accessing the internet is in fact accessing it.

How can I force Windows Firewall (on XP) to always ask permission to access the internet?

You CAN'T! If it is disabled, it doesn't know what is going on. Of course, windows may remind you from time to time that the firewall isn't enabled. Are you using quickVPN, by any chance? Just curious.

BTW little known fact... A key part of the security system, that some VPNs depend on is built INTO the firewall on VISTA! SO, if this VPN doesn't fix that problem, they may get more calls about VPN problems. On vista turning off the firewall may disable the firewall allowing it to operate, but DISABLE the api it uses to actually do the job, so it CAN'T work. IRONIC, huh!?!?!? Leave it to M/S!

Well I have it enabled. But I don't get asked about things accessing the internet, it really bugs me.

And I didn't know that about Vista. That's crazy.

OH, OK, I misunderstood you. Vista DOES ask about everything accessing the internet.(Remember those old vista vs mac commercials? THEY'RE TRUE!) The XP forewall is a one way deal that basically limits access to your machine from the internet. SO, if you are infected, a program on your computer can still access the internet.
