LeBron....am I the only one?

I was just wondering about something...

For the past few days.

It seems as though the news is filled with "Where is LeBron James going to play?"

Seriously, who cares?

I don't.

Am I the only one who thinks this story is getting WAAAAAYYYYYYY more attention than it deserves?

Oh well, once he makes his decision, I'm sure there will be equally weighty matters that get the attention they deserve. After all, the world revolves around celebrities and athletes. I mean, who needs to know about things that could actually have an impact on our lives, right?

Just wondering,
Michael

When Kurt started a thread on the subject I had no idea what or who "LeBron" was. I left it until some others had posted and deduced that it was a he and he played a game.

    You're not alone. At all.

Didn't know who LeBron was? Are you serious? Do you live in the United States? Do you own a TV? I don't expect everybody to know every sports figure in the US, but if you live in the US I do expect people who have a heartbeat to know the top 10 most recognizable people in the US. Unfortunately LeBron is one of them.

Oh, no I didn't care. But it just goes to show you how starved for entertainment the American public has become.

Michael (and I have no emotional investment in this) it's no less viable than
people talking about where Green Day is going to play in concert next or
if The World Inferno Society will ever get back together or anything that
    some people care about.

    Some people like sports.

Others like music. Others art. Others NASCAR.

You can't even imagine how many NASCAR freaks their are. I could show
you a site that will blow your mind. When Dale Ernhardt died, it was literally
    a day of morning.

To people who know nothing about racing, they didn't even know who he was.

We don't all have the same interests. And somebody heavily invested in
basketball, especially if they have a favorite team he may go to...trust
    me, they care.

All I'm saying is, try to see the other side of this.

It's what makes the world go round.

We should all make threads about the stuff we don't care about. This forum would be so much better.

But to answer your question directly...How about the city of Cleveland caring? Lebron is worth about $100 -$200 MILLION dollars to the Cleveland economy over the next few years if he signs with them. I think a few parking lot attendants and popcorn venders care.

If you don't care, who cares? I don't. But thanks for letting us know.

Kurt, it's called a rant. The only difference is that I used the phrase "who cares?" It was just something that was on my mind, so I shared it. That's all.

Steven, it would be different if the Green Day concert dominated the news for the past two weeks.

Yes, I know why others care. I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who doesn't.

      So that's 3.

True, but with the new owner, that billionaire from Russia, they may be able to change their luck. Seems he is willing to spend the money to make the team better. I can see the same thing happen to my Warriors if Larry Ellison buys them and that may happen since he is one of three remaining bidders for the Warriors.

You know what? I just realized I don't know what team he's on.

And I'm guessing he's not considering the Bucks, but I guess it would be cool if he came here. I don't know anything about him, but I know he's a big name.

I like the NFL, and that's about it. BUT...while I don't follow any other sports, I'm always happy to hear when one of our local teams have won. I may be a bit on the uninformed side, but I still root for the home team, regardless of the sport.

    All the best,
    Michael

p.s. Just a head's up. I was intending this to be a bit more light-hearted. I'm not really that mad or anything, and I appreciate all the comments. Now, don't even get me started on NASCAR.

For an hour he'll talk about how much he likes cleveland, how much he'll miss his home town, and how much he's gonna like florida or NY.

Seems he loves attention (no surprise there ) - a Prime Time, one-hour "Where's LeBron Going" t.v. show?

Little over the top for my taste.

Seeing as I am not a fan of basketball, it's no loss to me that local NY/NJ temas didn't get him. But he was on the front page, back page and about 3 pages in the sports section of OUR local paper - LOL.

They printed what the owner of the Cleveland Cavs wrote about it. He was not happy, to say the least.

This would be 5? I don't care. In fact, I'm sick of turning to CNN and its sister station HLN to see yet another item about this guy. Who cares? It's on every hour on the hour. How do I know? Because I have one or the other station running a good part of the day while I work.

When I flip to the other station, there he is again. I went out for my dog's daily walk, came back and turned on the TV. There he was. I broke for lunch, turned on the TV. There he was. First item.

Day 2. Turned on AM news, there he is. Coffee break. There he is. Lunch. There he is. Dog walk. There he is. Trip to the laundry room and back. There he is... it's endless.

And if you sit and watch the news for more than 15 minutes, there he is again.

I mean, come on already. NObody is THAT important. Well, maybe one.

If I roll my eyes once more, I'm gunna be permanently looking backwards.

Interesting that so few even consider just turning off the television. The only reason these "celebrities" get over exposed is because people have been so well trained that shutting down the boob tube has become unthinkable.

Years back, Harlan Ellison had a TV criticism column called "The Glass Teat". It's been over thirty years and the public still can't drink from a cup.

You can't get away from it in ANY medium. As I noted in my post above, it was on the front page, back page and 3 pages of the sports section.

All during the week, there he was, featured.

On the Sports Radio station I listen too - every 30 minutes or so for the past 2 weeks had SOMETHING about this.

And, of course, the sports TV stations.

Me, like many others, don't have time to watch games of our favorites teams as they happen. So we get the highlights...

...after 6 interviews or feature stories about this.

So, it's really not about watching too much t.v. (well, not for all of us).

I pretty much gave up tv with any regularity about 7 years ago. Problem is, I am not ready to give up the newspaper, or catching my highlights

So we grin and bear it. I am a NY Mets fan - I suppose if this were a story about a big named baseball player possibly coming to the Mets, my viewpoint would be entirely different.

Just for the record, I'm not "watching" TV. If my record player still worked, or my 8 track player wasn't always skipping tracks, or if I had a radio that didn't only got heavy metal, and if I had a decent CD player with real speakers rather than those in my computer, I could put on something else on for background noise.

Alas, TV is my only option. Besides, I like CNN because it's news - and I like to hear people talking naturally, as opposed to movies or sitcoms or soaps. Makes me feel like I'm back in the newsroom, where I was able to accomplish a lot. It's motivational.

As Mike with the newspaper example explains, this news story is excessive. And I didn't catch the story until AFTER he'd chosen Florida. Can't imagine having put up with it for 2-3 weeks before that as well.

See? I know he went to Miami. I know how upset Cleveland was. I know one coach or manager said his team would score before he did. And I don't have any interest whatsoever in basketball. I'm a football fan. However, I must say Bball was rather exciting when I was covering the high school games. Lots of talent there.

Here we go... this is what I read in our local paper this morning - I thought it was the coach, but it was the owner:

Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert posted this letter on the team's website after LeBron James' announcement he was leaving for the Miami Heat.

          Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER 'KING' WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

          Just watch.

          Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue....

          Dan Gilbert
          Majority Owner
          Cleveland Cavaliers
This was the reason for my "soap" reference above.

HaHa, dude sounds like an emotional ex-wife after being dropped for a trophy wife.

Dude, you had 7 years to do something and you fell short, Mr. "Majority" owner.

LeBron did his part, played hard, so either through incompetence on your organizations part and/or economic feasibility of getting the team LeBron needs to be a champion, you failed.

What, you needed an extra 5 years, making it 12 total to get Lebron and Cleveland what they needed?

Dude did not want to end up like Charles Barkley, Dan Marino, Patrick Ewing and Jim Kelly, always at the door, but never getting in.

Or waiting until their prime is about over or over BEFORE deciding to go to a team that can get them a Championship ring.

So you want him to be like Jim Kelly and get to the big dance four times, and failing?

EVERYONE does whats in their OWN self interest , regardless of ANY claims of loyalty.

Billionaires like you Mr. "Majority" owner, show us that every freakin day, like BP and WallStreet, for starters.

Folks are only loyal until their NOT, usually when they find a better deal or the chance at improving their fortune whether financial, social or whatever.

By the way, if people were so "LOYAL" , Wal-Mart and others would not be so successful, you know, "support American" and all that rah rah.

People and Businesses are only loyal because it serves their interest TODAY...,

People and Businesses are only loyal until a better deal comes along, then they are not, it goes straight out the window EVERYTHING they said and fought for in the past; the only contemplation is of weighing consequences vs the payoff.

As the years progress, Loyalty means less and less, its just something you "throw" up, like when people say "have a nice day" and don't look you in the eye or don't mean it, just simply something you say, out of habit, not sincerity.
