This is Lucky.

He's a baby finch that was found on the side of a dirt road while we were up in the White Mountains. One of his legs was badly broken so we took him in until we could get him to the Fish & Game rehab center.

    Kay,

Yea he's a cute little guy. He doesn't act like a wild bird but he is. Hopping around like he doesn't have a care in the world about his broken leg.

Here's part 2 of Lucky's Motion Picture Debute:

A valuable lesson can be learned from that video.

What a little cutie. Doesn't look like he will want to leave home anytime soon.

Are you going to keep him?

If his leg is actually bent, you can splint it with flat toothpicks and medical tape. He doesn't seem the least afraid - but he's likely never eaten so well!

I'd like to share another part of Lucky's journey with us that I think holds a valuable lesson as well.

On the way to Lucky's new home at a wildlife refuge, there was a mama duck lying in the road- hit and killed as she was crossing the road from one part of the lake to the pond on the other side.

It makes me wonder how many people take time to reflect--even for just a moment- to stop with a reverance for life and realize the impact that has.

        Namaste,

Sometimes when an animal needs help, someone comes along and they aren't scared of them. I always would trust a person that a little hurt bird would trust. Birds often die just from the fear of someone when "captured". This one seems to have tagged ya a good guy.

    Patrician,

BJ would have kept him if it wasn't against the law up there.

    Kay,

I thought about that.. then we thought about what would happen if the bird freaked because it just didn't want to be held or something spooked him. We figured the best thing to do was give him to experts who have the tools and experience with cool injured birdies like him

It always affects me when I seen animal killed in the road or street. It's a life lost - and that animal only had that one life.

Around here in the early summer, it's common to see traffic totally stopped while some do-gooder (sometimes it's me) helps a box turtle get to the other side of the road before being crushed.

You're right - best to let the experts fix the little guy.

Oh, you and BJ need to talk. She stops traffic, and becomes a crossing guard for frogs.

Good for her - frogs are notoriously bad at looking both ways before crossing.

Someone has to take care of them!
