Ever broken a bone?

I'm 48 and I've never suffered a broken bone. I'm told that's not too common. Not too rare, but apparently us "non breakers" are out-numbered by "breakers".

Both my own and someone else's.

    • Broke my arm in Kintergarden.

Broke most of my fingers playing football and basketball.

But the one I really hated was breaking my little toe the night before I left for a week in Hawaii. I was bare foot in the dark and kicked the coffee table leg while I was walking past it. That one will take your breath away.

    • Only one very tiny bone in my foot about 20 years ago. Went through my entire childhood, complete with tree-climbing, jumping off bridges and almost getting squished by a dump truck - not one thing broken.

Hurrying out of a store and back to the car, I came down hard on the side of my foot stepping off the curb and broke my foot (well, one small piece of it). Can ya believe that?

I raised all three of my children and none of them have had a broken bone yet (25, 22, 17) and my son was hit by a car at 14 and thrown close to 100 feet.

We have strong bones overall, considering.

  • Lots of sprains and strains from playing basketball and climbing trees (as a kid, haven't climbed any lately ), but no breaks here either (age 45).

  • Fell out of the top bunk bed and broke my collarbone. At least thats the story we told my mother. Reality was my older brother and I both wanted the top bunk and he pushed me out and I broke it.

    • Broke a bone in my foot running in a race - wouldn't have been so bad except I was in the lead so I kept running to the finish line. That didn't help much.

Broke a finger holding the reins when I went over a jump...and the horse didn't. Bone stayed in place so no biggie....but embarrassing.

  • Broke my left arm in eighth grade when I fell out of a tree. My dad grabbed and wiggled and announced it wasn't broken and didn't take me to the hospital for three days. Which correlates to the worst three days of my life pain wise as I recall. Then I broke the same arm again when I was 22 playing basketball diving for a loose ball. I remember the doc being really upset with me and cussing at me for cutting a groove in the palm of the cast that fit my golf club. Yeah you can play golf with a cast on your left hand if you're a righty. Actually helped my slice at the time if i recall.
  • Slipped on ice and broke my left shoulder. Split the epichondyle lengthwise. I didn't enjoy it at all.

    • No complete breaks, but plenty of fractures!

The most memorable was the first when I was 11 years old. I tried to jump from one end of the monkey bars to the other on the playground. It was hot and humid and when I reached the other side, my grip slipped, sending me flying into the merry-go-round which then spun me into the air and onto the sun-baked ground.

I have no idea which "hit" caused the fracture as I hardly remember the point by point blows as it happened so quickly. Well that, and I suffered a concussion as well!

  • Cracked just beneath my pinky finger on my right hand. Hurt like hell.
  • Only stuff like toes and pinkies, nothing really massive. But I do still have some issues with my right knee where I was bringing my science fair project to the car, what 10 years ago (?), and I slipped on the ice. To this day, I call it "The old Science Fair Injury" and I talk about it as if it was like a football injury or something.
  • I broke my arm playing football at age 12.

As far as it being rare or not, I guess it depends on what kind of activities you partake in during your life. I'm guessing violin players don't break many bones.
  • Well, at least you got to spam this thread with your sig...
  • I've broken my left arm 4 TIMES! twice at primary school twice in upper school. The second time was less than a week after having the cast off.Im also left handed so writing at school was a nightmare and i eventually learned to write with my wrong hand.
  • I was browsing this thread again and thought I should mention, I was 40 when I got my first break (not Hollywood). The only person who can say you've never had a broken bone is the one who lays you out in a box.

Maybe my broken shoulder was karma for bragging that I had "never suffered a broken bone".

Obviously, you now need to be very careful...
  • Well, I WOULD have never broken a bone, but I was in a car accident. I suffered a hairline fracture on a leg. BTW I STILL remember the pain I was in when I tried to put my foot on the floor after the cast was removed. YIKES!
  • My pinky finger got a hairline fracture playing volleyball once but other than that I've never broken any bones (I'm 26).
  • I broke three fingers on a hand and broke left leg in auto-crush last year
  • Minor problem such as sprain from high-heels shoes. Terrible!
  • I'm still in physical therapy for a mountain bike accident that I had back in February. Broke and dislocated my shoulder AND shattered my kneecap into 20 pieces. Fun. I will never again take walking for granted.
  • Not a single bone in my body... and never had a cavity either.... I'm a lucky guy!
  • I broke my toe falling 5 feet off a fence. Never went to the doctor for it, it "clicks" each time I bend it up and down.
  • Have fractured the bones in my foot several times during my years as a distance runner. Once ran seven miles on a foot fractured in two places but didn't realise until after...endorphins and all that stuff.
  • No, not a bone. But I tore a muscle really bad. The pain is incredible.
  • my fortune nope..
  • I've had some bad experience with bunk beds also. Plus I broke a few bones playing hockey when I was younger.
  • I have never broken a bone and hope that I never do. KNOCK ON WOOD!
  • Broken Femur in 6th grade riding down a hill in the rain with "no handlebars" - that body cast was really comfortable, in the summer.

And Broke my ankle ice skating last year - with almost a full recovery. Can run, play tennis now.

Both times, I have to say I wasn't fully "paying attention," wasn't completely conscious in the moment.

  • I never broke a bone.

But I left my Tonka truck out one night when I was maybe 6 years old. My younger brother fell out of his bed that night, landed on the truck and broke his collar bone.

  • Being a martial artist I've had my nose broken 7 times, and once broke my little toe going to the change room 10 minutes before a tournament, so it was either forfeit the match or fight with a broken toe. I fought and won, but couldn't fight in the final.
  • I've had my heart broken several times.

    Does that count?
    • [1] reply
    • I'm sure if the heart was a bone, then the amount of people who have had a broken bone would instantly double.
  • Never broken a single bone yet. I think my bones are too hard to break. Also bone weight is more. I have a plus point and a minus point of my bones.
  • well, if you count all those extreme guys out there and not just nationally but globally, I think we are outnumbered.

    • I broke my right wrist and fractured my left wrist in a motorcycle accident when I was about 16 or 17. Ironically I was coming back from the doctor (because I had burnt my leg on the exhaust of my bike because my dad forgot to leave me some space in the garage), and they had finally removed the dressings etc.

About 5Km from home, someone did a u-turn and I didn't see them on time, my front wheel hit their front left tyre and I flew over the car (didn't touch it once) and landed on my backside on the tar on the other side. My hands went through my bike's fairing before I did.

I've also broken toes, and dislocated my shoulder. and broke three ribs when a horse ran over me. (I kept it quiet for almost a week as well )
  • i broke my hand and head in my chidhood. I just dance with my big brother at home then he push me forward to balcony and i fell down and crashed on flower plot . There is a huge blood all over place with my broken arm and a wounded head
  • Also never broken a bone. Guess I am just luck and bruises is my thing.
  • Crushed two vertibrae in my lower back in a car crash in '92. Fortunately they broke outwards or I'd be writing this from a wheelchair. I'm an inch shorter than I used to be.

Also broke a bone in my foot doing tae kwon do - guy blocked a kick with knee.

I've only had stitches twice. Once when I was like 3 and it was near my left eye. The second time was about 4 years ago near my right eye.

    Been pretty lucky.
  • nop, all my bones are at the same place as i was born
  • I have never broke anything, but I broke a guys jaw once!

    • Yes, 38 to be exact, but 0 in the last 5 years.

I always lived by the rule, "It's not a sport unless it can kill you..." I played a lot of those "sports" and came close a few times...
  • Broke a couple of fingers. Also broke one of the bones in my right wrist reaching back to brace a backwards fall. Never had it set. Had it x-rayed about four years later at an orthopedic clinic.

A doctor there said it was the most remarkable thing he'd seen (I don't think he gets out enough) because the distal part of the bone (navicular) hadn't had any blood supply since the fracture but it was still alive and thriving just the same.

I know, way more information than necessary.
