Hi all .

if The thread title is tacky, I am sorry. Its really exactly what I wanted to know.

I have recently had my 3rd recurrence in the last 7 years and I have had surgeries chemo each time. Iam very strong and its never really made me depressed or feel I can't cope as I have allot of other blessing in my life etc.

I want to help others as I feel ther is allot I can give as far as advice and guidance so I thought of starting a blog. Is adsense my only way I can monetize this? Some Ideas would be great.

I don't want to have money as my main focus and anything I make money from must be ethical, legitimate and even charitable etc...

I don't want to exploit my condition its just I often hear people say try make money about things you are passionate in and know allot about. And this is one of mine, but I am scared to exploit it .

So just some ideas ? and do you think making money from it is wrong?

P.S. This post in no way was for any sympathy it is a genuine question I believe some warriors would learn from and have good ideas for. It took me a few days to pluck the courage to ask

EDIT here are my new thoughts on this topic

Hey all I wanted to bump this thread as I have had a change of heart. I have learned enough skills to monetize anything else and would rather like to use my Cancer as a way to help and give back where I can.....The internet is a remarkable place to interact with as many people as possible and I have found this with my cancer story with many women telling me I have helped them in a small way and this has felt fantastic, so I want to do that rather; here is my story just in case, with no upsell adwords or anything else too monetize it LOL see here

    Hi Cathy

I don't see anything wrong at all in trying to monetize a blog about cancer. Good for you. You have a great attitude.

One way to monetize it besides adsense is by having books for sale on the sidebar using Amazon. There's a ton of books on the subject.

Or, why not even write your own book and sell it on Amazon? There's a site called creatspace which is free and is owned by Amazon. It helps you create books yourself. Here's a link to it:

    https://www.createspace.com/

    Good luck with your battle.

I bet you could write a hell of a book. If you do decide to there's a wso here that some lady wrote which shows how she uses createspace to write books. I haven't bought it, but it got good reviews. The thread itself has a ton of good info and tips. I'll see if I can find it and post it here for you.

I actually had my 4000th post a few weeks ago, but it went down to 3998 I guess because a thread or two got deleted. Posts in the off topic section don't count anymore, otherwise I would probably have 30 times as many. Thanks for the congratulations, but I think it's more of an example that I don't have a life. lol.

By the way, I believe I was the one responsible for posts not counting in the off topic section. I mentioned it to Allen Says in one thread and said it didn't make sense to have them count because most posts in the off topic section have nothing to do with internet marketing. A few days later they didn't count anymore. I guess that's one good thing I've done for this forum. ;-)

Thats your Fault! why am I even posting here ...Kidding I think that makes alot of sense.

I guess my thread is actually about IM, have you ever seen a thread moved out of off topic to the main forum? that would be fun if the moderators did that.

Ah i just thought of another monetizing technique "wigs" maybe some way to be an affiliate wig sales person. Chemo is alot easier when you have a good wig.

I believe Jim Straw knows something about the Wig business, he is around the WF on occasion but Google him (Business Lyceum) just the same. He'll respond directly to your email inquiries.

I have a donation button on my site about kidney failure, but I haven't really tried to monetize it.
I have been told I should, but its really more a self therapy site more than anything else.

I was wondering about making it charitable, is your donation button donations to you or a charity?

As much as I would love to help a cancer charity with my Blog I feel if I make money from it I can spend more time and ad more value.

I am in two minds as this is a passion of mine and making money will really help me as I have now stopped working its a bit much to work fulltime and go through this, but If i make money am I exploiting?

I found that link to the wso. As I said if you don't want to buy the report, just reading the thread, which is HUGE, will give you a lot of information about writing a book. I'm going to write a few someday. I think.

I have that WSO, and I just did the final proof of my first book. It was simple and free (except ordering the proof for review, which was about 3 bucks).

Once you write it and publish, offer it from your blog, give it away to build a list, or offer a one time offer or something.

Cancer is horrible. It would be great to see something good come out of this.

Good luck. Let me know if you need help on the book thing.

I don't think you would be exploiting at all.

I've noticed with friends diagnosed with cancer most seem to battle depression and fear.

Having a blog where the attitude is upbeat as yours is could be truly helpful. I'm sure it must be almost impossible to describe how you feel to someone who hasn't experienced the problem.

Finding a blog by someone who has been there-done that could help with practical and emotional issues. Monetizing it only makes sense to give you the time to work on it.

        Its donations directly to me.
A severe illness like kidney failure can cause major financial hardships on people. Most people would faint if they knew what my dialysis treatment alone costs.
Are you exploiting it if you make money. I don't think so. While my site (which is in my sig) is,as I said earlier, more self help, I honestly think people leave it with a better understanding of what a person with kidney failure goes through.
There are some wonderful people here on this forum. I even had one member tell me that they would donate their kidneys to me if something ever happened to them. While I hope that offer never pays off, it meant a lot to me.
By the way, I also had a type of cancer, but that was removed. It I had had they type that caused hair loss, I probably would have tried to monetize it with wigs.

        exploiting
        present participle of ex·ploit (Verb)

        1. Make full use of and derive benefit from (a resource): "500 companies sprang up to exploit this new technology".
        2. Use (a situation or person) in an unfair or selfish way: "the company was exploiting a legal loophole".

I don't see how you could be 'exploiting' yourself or your condition so long as it's for an honorable/ethical purpose. And it sounds like you plan on making full use of and deriving a positive benefit with your goal. It's not like you're using the sympathy card just to get people to feel sorry for you and start sending in money for no reason. They're obviously getting some benefit out of it, too, so it's not a selfish thing in the negative context.

        Good luck to you.

      Hi Cathy,

I think your project sounds inspiring. Each of us is here for a reason and limited amount of time. You are addressing your situation head on like a true Warrior. You go, girl!

      Ideas:

      - Check out others in this health field - what type promotions do they have going on for their books / ebooks? No need to reinvent the wheel: do what they do (create an ongoing ezine, blog, write articles, press releases and create videos, social network on Facebook, etc.)

      - Network with associated industry themed groups, online and off

Prayers for improved health and your success

I would create some kind of membership community with people facing similar conditions

Its amazing how close people can become over the internet, without ever meeting each other. Being able to have a very close knit community people in the same position has many benefits for the members.

I have never faced what you are facing, but I can imagine how lonely it must feel sometimes. Maybe nobody really truly understands how you feel because they arent in the same position. Having a membership community where people can relate to each other, share stories, encourage each other, share advice, share strategies to help with family, life, etc is very valuable.

Get 500 people paying $40 a month is 240,000 a year. If you dont need the money, donate all of it to a related cause.

Facebook, social networking sites would be a good way to get members and share info along with all the traditional ways of getting traffic

Its very achievable and would be of great value!

I was about to answer but if my post didn't count forget it...

Nah seriously I can easily understand your hesitation, I have Asperger Syndrom and I always thought that I should make a blog on this, but no I just can't. I mean selling Clickbank products to desperate parents? No way! Honestly? It makes me sick that people are selling that kind of products on CB! But I think your case is totally different

Selling Amazon books about cancer on your website just makes a lot of sense. There are probably a ton of excellent and recommendable books on that subject on Amazon that you can link to. (Maybe I should make an Asperger website to promote Amazon's books as well!)

Someone told about a Paypal donation bouton and I think this is a good idea too. There is nothing wrong in doing this, people are doing this on their Youtube channels because they are making videos. Talk about a contribution to the world!

And I just took a quick look at CJ, and you can promote the LiveStrong Fondation training equipment as well. Not exactly in your niche but that's an example. I also remembered a Breast Cancer donation campaign a few months ago, so maybe you can find some donation active programs with some search.

          Ok good luck!

Yes I made some money selling clickbank products I never actually used but it got to me so now I only sell things I have tried and feel comfortable promoting.

Asperger Syndrom: never heard of it looked it up very interesting....Would make a very dedicted blog or group if you did start one.

Thanks, my attitude has always been that "you can't take life to seriously, because you will never get out alive "

And yes Chemo is tough " Iam actually having it right now" but so is millions of other things in life ....Luckiliy there are millions of great things to experience

        Just be yourself.

Tell your story. Tell what you've done, healthcare wise, to take care of
yourself. Maybe you've eaten a certain diet or taken certain supplements.

There are so many things you can do to monetize this.

        1. Adsense
        2. Health Books
        3. Supplements

There is a whole group of people who believe that you can treat disease
with good eating, supplements, herbs, etc.

If YOU believe in it yourself, there is nothing wrong with sharing your
        beliefs with others.

Having said all that, this is one hell of a competitive niche so you're going
to have to do a ton of marketing to get any kind of sufficient traffic. But
you can do it if you put your mind to it.

Based on what you've survived through so far, I have NO doubt that you
can make your blog a huge success.

In the meantime, my prayers are with you for your health.

    Cathy, your a strong women!

All i can say as i ventured into internet marketing, my main concern is not on earning money but passion in helping others and gaining knowledge on my way.

Facebook right now is a very strong website, i think you could create a group to raise awareness and help people as facebook is a great way of communication.

Twitter could also a way to update your life to tell those who are interested, example me. i definitely will do follow you

Facebook and Twitter is a way for traffic,
Adsense may be a way to earn money, you could also try linkbucks,
Furthermore writing an eBook and gaining potential or loyal readers is a great way too.
There's no boundary to it, and i don't think it's wrong to earn money from it.
Since your doing it for passion, money is just part of it and people will definitely understand.

    and get Well SOON!

    Hi Cathy,

I am a cancer survivor too. I started a non-profit resource center in my town, but had to walk away from it last year when I merged with the wrong organization. I wanted to continue to help other women so I decided to put together a cancer site that includes a blog, amazon products, adsense, and my own products. I have a huge follower on Twitter which has helped with traffic. My main purpose of the blog is to help other cancer survivors, but placed products on there to help supplement my income.

Feel free to check it out to get ideas. Contact me should you have any questions.

Do you have a membership site as well. I never ceast to be amazed at the amount of money that can be made using membership sites in seemingly obscure micro-niches. Something like this I can see having much more potential than those, as the issue is uber important to other cancer survivors.

And with software these days, managing a membership site it very easy.

If you want, pm me with your phone number and we can chat. Maybe I can give you some ideas. Another thing I do part time is sell a compression bra to the hospital where I had my surgery. I can share more about that with you if you want to talk. I am more than happy to help a fellow survivor sister

Absolutely. Value value value is uber critical in any membership site, particularly if you are doing it for a good purpose.

You can also drip information so you dont need to come up with a whole bunch of new information every month for the life of the site. Once you have enough info to drip effectively, then all you need to do is..

Promote it...perhaps get some good partnerships with related web sites. Affiliate program style.

Forum...Probably have a forum to interact with your community on a frequent basis!

I don't have much to add in terms of monetizing. Just one thought - I know when my Father-in-Law had cancer he lost his appetite big time. That was one of the things, IMO, that contributed to his passing so quickly. He wasn't a big man to begin with. I desparately searched the net for healthy home-made shake ideas that might help him put on weight, but never really found too much. He couldn't eat solid food and lived on Boost drinks for most of his last six months.

Not sure if this helps you out with any ideas. Just thought I'd add my own personal experience.

Keep your strong attitude and I'll say a little prayer for you.

    Hi Cathy,

I say: go for it! My wife is also a (breast) cancer survivor, so I have an idea what it is...

When we were told about it (3 yrs ago) I started to make notes about our discussions, fears, thoughts etc. They are still notes - but I am sure one day I will "monetize" it, although that's not always the right word for it

I want to share the experiences from both sides: the wife suffering from cancer, while she knows exactly what is what because she's a doctor; and the helpless husband that would desperately like to help...

    All the best!

    Well,
Why not ! A blog will be just great and please make an announcement of your blog on cancer forums and related health forums

you do not need money for that, just moderator's approval

Plus get that encrypted into the form of a book,
I guess some publisher would be more than just happy publishing your work !

And yes! Never let your spirits die !

    Hi Cathy,

First, best wishes on your endeavors. Great suggestions from above. As a Registered Nurse who has seen people do this successfully, there are a few things you need to know.

You need to know that there are some people who will Troll you. These are really nasty comments from people who are so miserable that they have nothing better to do that to try to steal what ever joy others may have and try to put out any flames of passion they may have.

Their comments often suck you into a vortex of endless comments, rantings and ravings. They are time wasters. Life is too short to wast it on them.

Second, you do not need to give it to charity. You can use the income to finance a career of getting into public speaking and spread your message to an even wider audience. Paid speakers get around 2K for a lecture if they are a personality speaker just getting started. You will need to get good at it though.

My personal interest in cancer is called CAM CAN which is complimentary alternative medicine and complimentary alternative nursing. One of my specialties in this field crosses over into cancer. So I have consulted on a number of cancer patients.

This is from the medical standpoint. There is also the emotional and spiritual part of the process. By spiritual, I mean the force that actuates our mind, the spirit of man and not religious.

Within one of these is a book waiting to be written and information that people may want to know.

    Best wishes.

    Jonathan, RN

  • Cathy, I think this can work (and you should do it). Be a shining light to others who need support that are going through what you are going through put up a Blog...put GOOD resources up..do research and offer GOOD content.

    Put adsense in your blog.

There are several forums online about cancer...join them! Leave your link to your blog in your PS...

Just in case someone ever asks..make sure to tell your subscribers that 10% of your ad income goes to charity.

BUILD a subscriber list...as the list grows so will your income.

And also write a short e-book (doesn't have to be long, 8k words will be enough) that will help others.

Create an affiliate program for your book and place it in clickbank...make sure to get the buyers of your book to subscribe to your blog.

Target niche (LOW competition keywords) to write about your topic...put articles in ezinearticles.com with a link to your blog to get traffic from google.

Offer that on your blog as well and every year come out with a version 2 of the book. By then you will have a LOT of subscribers and your next book sale will be very big.

I would launch your first book a few months after you have build your list up and have a few subscribers.

If you were able to get 50 subscribers a day (that = 1,500/month) and launched the book within 6 months (with a very modest 2% conversion rate... at 30.00 a pop you would make 6k.

    Thats 1k/month

And keep in mind that can double or triple if you increase your conversion rate and get more subscribers.

In fact if you went the book rout I wouldnt even have adsense on the blog. The income would be so low in comparison and only decrease the CR of your book and distract your readers. Just my 2cents

    Hi Cathy
I just wanted to wish you well and hope that you overcome this awful disease soon and permanently.

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with you monetizing your blog, you would not be exploiting the disease at all. In fact your blog, I'm sure, will help thousands of people who might be going through something similar.

Imagine if you can help just one person to change their attitude to one as good as yours and give them the encouragement and strength that they need to fight and overcome this disease - your blog will be a blessing to so many people.

I don't have any monetization ideas to offer you as I think everything has been covered. I know it was suggested for you to write your own book, you could even sell it through Clickbank. You could have an amazing book about your story, your experience, share what you did to stay positive and have such a great outlook. Your story will be such an inspiration to others, I would love to see you come out with your own book.

Good luck Cathy. My prayers are with you and everyone else fighting this terrible illness.
    Take care

Hey all I wanted to bump this thread as I have had a change of heart. I have learned enough skills to monetize anything else and would rather like to use my Cancer as a way to help and give back where I can.....The internet is a remarkable place to interact with as many people as possible and I have found this with my cancer story with many women telling me I have helped them in a small way and this has felt fantastic, so I want to do that rather; here is my story just in case with no upsell adwords or anything else too monetize it LOL see here
