Whats With Marketers and Douchy Photos?

Lately, I've seen a sudden explosion in the number of marketers putting really douchy photos of themselves online.

Pictures of the marketer pointing at the camera, in the 'smug superman' pose, the all time favorite 'thumbs up', the 'you-rock-buddy' pose, the 'i-rock-buddy' pose, the 'i-belong-in-a-romantic-movie' pose...

I've seen an explosion in almost all such pics recently.

New trend?

If it is, someone please put a stop to it. Looking like complete douchebag idiots is the last thing this profession needs.

    That was a bit harsh.

Some call those pics "motivating", others call them "inspiring"... end of the day it's just marketing.

Lol this thread is funny, is it to do with making money?

What does their photos have to do with anything ?

    Pointless topic should be deleted.

      Agreed.

People include their photo to make their publications a little more personal. Like Martin Lewis on his website moneysavingexpert.com

Its all done to show you the person behind the business.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the quality of contributions (whether in a forum post, or blog comment, etc) that 'should' mean the most. I can look past someone's avatar if they provide quality information.

I can see where you are coming from but listen up,

Your definition of "douchy" will be different from the next person (and especially around the globe). What people consider "douchy" in the Easy might just be considered cool in the West.

I've changed avatars about once a year. It's pretty random. Up
until the current one I'm using here I just used head shots of
    my real head.

Sometimes you notice somebody had a real nice pro photo taken
and they use that. If you're a consultant or whatever, that's
probably the best approach. It's on my to-do list behind about
    a million other things.

As far as forum avatars in the broader sense of personal branding,
I think it's an over-rated thing. I do however think it's useful to
go under your real name, or at least sign your posts and make
yourself approachable as a real-name type of person.

Mr. Gaskill, you totally missed the boat on this one. Mr. Singh is a very intelligent marketer who knows how to get massive traffic to his WSO by posting "pointless" threads in the Main Internet Marketing Section.

Is what I'm saying wrong Mr. Singh???

    Hang on a second here.

First of all, I never even mentioned 'avatars'

Avatars wasn't on my mind at all when I said 'douchy' pics.

What you have as your avatar doesn't make an ounce of a difference to me. After all, a forum is a closed community where one is allowed certain freedom to be - shall I say: yourself.

The pictures I was referring to were those I'd seen on websites (don't want to point to any one specifically). These weren't avatars or pictures on closed communities, but out there for every one to see.

Secondly, the definition of the word 'douchy' will vary from person to person, but you have to admit that there is a certain generally accepted consensus of what is douchy and what is not. 90% of the people will accept that Spencer Pratt is douchy. We as a society have certain standards to which we hold other members. And I think the standard for 'douchiness' is pretty well defined, while still being variable.

I never mentioned anyone by name or gave a general indication as to who or who is not 'douchy'. I can't understand why some members would move into personal attacks. I didn't expect such a response from members here...I thought WF as a whole was a tolerant community, especially when no single person was the target of the original post.

And as per this topic not being related to marketing, well, the way a community's members perceive and present themselves says a lot about that community. If a certain kind of 'image' or photo style is more popular these days then what are the reasons behind it? What kind of marketing message does it send to the nameless newbie who comes across your site?

Marketing is all about images. If a certain style of images are being constructed lately, then why is it so? What kind of marketing mileage are you getting from them?

I don't think there are fixed rules to marketing (I'm not talking about principles). If a person doesn't want to show himself to the world, that doesn't mean he isn't a successful marketer.

Once again, I reiterate: I'm not talking about forum avatars. As I said, there's a certain license with forum avatars that you perhaps wouldn't have with a LinkedIn profile (I'm dead sure Allen Says doesn't have a smiley as his LinkedIn image). Different images fit different contexts. I'm talking about the images marketers use on their sites, not forums.

Secondly, marketing IS about images. I mean come on man, all marketing is about images. Not images in the literal sense alone, but the figurative, metaphorical aspect of it as well. Apple has a certain 'image', and Steve Jobs with his turtlenecks pretty much encapsulates it.

The figurative aspect of images and the literal aspects are intrinsically tied to each other. This is why companies pay celebs millions of dollars to endorse their products. This is why Roger Federer can command $25M for a sponsorship deal. Because Roger Federer - both is actual image and the perceptive image the audience have built up in their minds about him - conveys a certain class, style, and values.

So here's my question again: what do the images we as marketers use convey to our audience?

Your concept of marketing is oddly restricted to branding. Marketers that do not produce and sell their own products or perform services have no need for branding at all.

Affiliate marketers are more in the "direct response marketing" category, something you've overlooked. We identify wants and help prospects satisfy those wants. It would be rare (outside of lists) for the prospect to ever know who is herding them to sales pages.

Branders are creating an image in hope of future gain. Direct response marketers are looking at immediate gain. Only a small percentage of WF members need branding. Showing a picture becomes personal choice and has little effect on business. Out of 200k members only a relatively tiny number work together, so a JV isn't a concern either.

          This isn't Madison Avenue.

As long as your avatar correctly convey's who you are or what you do for other members here, who cares? It's easy Warrior branding PR style. It's about "Image". And PR is a sub-topic of Marketing.
