Different mindsets - them and us

I was reading the results of a survey today, detailing how the same name means different things to the Y generation (them) than they do to baby boomers (us).

Examples:

John McEnroe

Them: a TV tennis commentator
Us: a superbrat tennis player, famous for expletives and epic duels with Bjorn Borg
(Memo to them : Bjorn Borg was not a member of Abba)

Clint Eastwood

Them: a respected film director
Us: You got to ask yourself one question o I feel lucky?" - well, do yuh, punk?

Fergie

Us: a one time royal princess
Them: a pop singer

TRS-80

Us: A wonderful doorway to a brand new world
Them: No idea - a fighter plane, maybe?

Beethoven

Us: One of the world's greatest composers - composer of the Fifth Symphony (never were four notes placed so distinctively together), Fur Elise and the awesome Ninth Symphony.
Them: a dog

Anyone think of any more?

Perhaps I shouldn't have used the "them" and "us" terms, which has the connotation of one side being right and one side being wrong.

I just found it an interesting item, and something I hadn't thought about, and must consider when talking to my own children.

HUH? Most considered it a poor attempt at a computer and nicknamed it TRASH 80!

On one of my first consulting gigs I had to work on a TRS-80. I saw the bad design from the getgo, but figured SOMETHING had to have been done to prevent it. I was WRONG! It went on the fritz, and I explained that to the customer. His response? "OH YEAH! Don't worry, that happens ALL THE TIME!"!

I agree Steve, it was rubbish, but you have to remember the context.
At the time, my computer was a Sinclair ZX-80, with - wait for it - a massive 1k memory.
And I had to buy a special thermal printer to print anything!

To me at the time, the TRS-80 and the Commodore 64 were light years ahead of what I had.

      Cheers

I once wrote a little apple program that did MORE than the original norton tools suite, and it took only a few KB. I DID write it in assembly though. Too bad is wasn't compatible with the IBM PC. 8-( But 1KB was a LOT back then!

Yeah, you should have seen it. They had a computer with little ram, and NO disk space, and it was probably about as big as an IBMPC, and it was programmed with SWITCHES, in ASSEMBLY language! Altair 8800 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And THAT was the real big launch point for the PC for most hobbyists. I used to have that popular electronics issue. 8-( I had to get rid of them on the last move.

As I recall, CHERRY was the leader in keyboard MATRIXES, and just the Main board(Regular old QWERTY style computer keyboard, NO function keys!), with NO keypad, cost about $100!

My first tape recorder was a REEL TO REEL, and it was STEREO! Color TV didn't really become popular until sometime in the 1970s, and was more expensive. And they were ALL CRT! The tvs may have been "solid state", and not had "any tubes", but there was ONE gigantic tube basically staring you in the face! LITERALLY, the screen was the top of a "Cathode Ray TUBE!"! And LCD watches probably didn't become popular until the LATE 1970s. Prior to that you had power hungry LED watches. You had to press a button to see the time. Phones used to have ONE style, in the US at least, and were controlled by the phone company.

But YEAH, even LITTLE things can throw you. I heard a story about a young boy being told about NAZI germany in WWII. He asked why israel never attacked them.

In less than a decade, the idea of a record being some physical storage method may be lost in history. In less than 3 decades, the idea of a disk being some physical storage method may meet the same fate.

And look at all the new official countries, and the internet.

It was also very expensive unless you had a friend serving in Nam who could pick you up one in Japan when on leave
The first phone I remember in my house came from the phone company.
If I remember right you had two choices. A desk phone or a wall phone, both where black with dials. You didn't have two phones in your house unless you paid extra.
My father and mother where in bowling leagues and had their league parties at our house. We had a long sectional table that ran out of the garage, a bar, cooking fires for the clam steams and a record player that my father left in the garage. It stood 5 feet tall, had a crank on the side, and only played 78's.
They all dug it though mainly because these where people born between 1895 (my father) and the 20's (my mother was born in 1916).
That was what they where use to listening to and they remembered when something like that was a luxury.

This is no joke. When I tried to rent a film called Immortal Beloved from a video store, I couldn't remember the title. I explained that it was a fictional drama about Beethoven. They smiled and helpfully said the big dog comedy, right this way. Even explaining the concept of what a classical composer is, proved to be a bit of a task ("It's all done on computer, isn't it?"). But, a generational thing? I don't think so, unless one of "Us" is more than two hundred years old.

WOW, a DRAMA about a dog known for comedic acts? That would be something. 8-)

YEAH, the term classical composer is HARD to describe if they don't know the term, because the terms classic and classical have been co-opted. And COMPOSER? WHO KNOWS!?!?

But, a generational thing? I don't think so, unless one of "Us" is more than two hundred years old.
GOOD POINT! Some people just made SO much of an impression that we heard about them even when I was a kid.
