Holy crap, spending one day in Linfen, China is equivalent to smoking three packets of cigarettes.

    How isn't everyone dying?

Those are a multitude of dangerously polluted places around the world. The technology to reduce most of it exists, but maybe not the will to apply solutions.

My throat and lungs are VERY sensitive to smog, etc... I can't even stand the buses at the airport if they run on gasoline. When I was younger, LA was FAR worse than it is now. I doubt it is as bad as that slideshow implies. As for arizona, I doubt that also, but it is hotter, which apparently makes things worse, and I haven't been there long enough to say. As for china, they don't seem to want to do ANYTHING that can affect their citizens mobility, where they are allowed, or industry. So they don't care about the pollution. California mandated a LOT of changes, requires any cars made after the 70s to be "smogged", etc.... It is also ILLEGAL to do things like remove catalytic converters.

It's "temperature inversion" that causes much of the pollution problems with cities in the western US. This happens mainly in areas around mountains...Which is the cities in the w. US.

This is when hot air is trapped over colder air below in the cities, which doesn't allow for the air to rise, trapping smog below.
