Have you flip-flopped?

Have you changed your opinion about anything or anyone?

I used to be against keeping whales and dolphins in places like Sea World, so I boycotted those places.

Then I saw a rep for Sea World explain how the animals acted as ambassadors for their species and did a lot of good, so I changed my mind and finally went to Sea World after visiting or living in San Diego for much of my life.

Then I flip-flopped again...Just recently I saw Jean Michel Cousteau and he brought up how whales and dolphins use sonar as their main sense and that putting them in cement pools ruins their ability to use their sonar, which is the same as putting a blindfold on people....So now I'm back to boycotting places like Sea World. I'm not on a "mission from God", it's just that I choose not to spend my money that way.

I also used to really dislike Charlie Sheen, but since he's been on TV I've grown to like him...Can't really explain it.

Sour kraut and pickles. It must have to do with getting older, but I couldn't stand either when I was younger, but now they're pretty good.

Gomer and Sgt. Carter - When I was a kid I thought Sgt Carter was a real jerk. But I caught an episode the other day and if Gomer did to me what he did to Sgt Carter, I would have taken his butt behind the barracks and Gomer would have to prove he could kick my butt.

Same with Dennis the Menace...As a kid I thought Mr. Wilson was evil. Now I realize it was Dennis that was the evil one.

Funny how things change as we get older...

Most of mine flip-flopping is in the religion and politics area, so I won't go there.
I did say years ago after I got rid of my Kaw 750 that I'd never own another jap bike, yet I now am the proud owner of a Yamaha Road Star.
I also swore I'd never even consider owning a Harley, after all my first v-twin was a 53 Indian Chief. Now at least once a week I go to Want ad Digest and check if the 68 Harley police bike is still there. If it lasts, the day I have the $7,800 saved up it's mine. If not there are a few other older Harleys there I have my eye on (forgive me Kieth and Ronnie).

Yeh, Kurt there is nothing constant except change as they say.

I think it is healthy and normal to be able to change our opinions so that we can grow.

Most of the things I have changed are after the fact. I am a non-conformist and individualist so I always have to do things my way first and it is usually the wrong way.

So lots of mistakes but I learned from them and it feels really good to admit I was wrong and then do what I should have done in the first place which is go along with 'the program'.

It is very hard being a contrarian and I often wish I could go with the herd instead of making a point not to.

Right now the middle usually looks pretty right since there do not seem to be too many absolutes (except some critical ones I can't discuss here). The truth doesn't change and it is not relative - just our opinions and views can and do change.

... and sometimes I over compensate out of a sense of guilt which usually only comes from fear of retribution - so that is like a flip-flop.

Like if I have been really hateful I will go out of my way to be super saccharin sweet to make up for it. However I am not sure which people hate worse -

    Kurt,

I actually went to seaworld recently, well, a few years ago. I believe it was shamu where they have this killer whale that is trained to splash water in a direction indicated by the handlers. The handlers try to make you think your foot stomping, etc.. does it. I can't see how that helps anyone, and the whales must have crazy thoughts going through their minds at that. Is it any wonder that that killer whale did what it did?

And even WILD dolphins are nice to humans. But dolphins in areas, such as seaworld, are HARRASSED, and one idiot wrote how they can be NASTY! HEY, I would be nasty TOO if you locked me up, had everyone rubbing my belly, and had me give piggy back rides to everyone! Sooner or later, I'd react.

I loved the hank hill episode where hank did that and the dolphin basically beat him up. LATER, he took a person that mistreated his niece, threw him in the water, rubbed the dolphins belly, and the dolphin beat up the guy that harrassed louann. They ended up taking the dolphin away!

I LIKED charlie sheen, but now generally DON'T!

I STILL dislike sourkraut, but always liked pickles.

I used to HATE beer, and now LIKE it!

Gomer and the sargeant are difficult. I think they BOTH had problems. Ironically, as I said earlier, I think this was based on "no time for sargeants". But it is amazing that EITHER made it through bootcamp!

As for dennis the menace, I always realized he was just a menace. Maybe that is because I was sometimes in wilson's place. I don't think he was really EVIL, except in the MOVIE they made him look EVIL! He broke wilsons teeth and tried to jury rig something with gum, etc... I don't think the series ever did something like THAT! BUT, the point was not WHY he did it, simply that he DID!

I flipflopped on religion, I guess maybe because I really never saw anything in it. I always wondered why we are here, and STILL wonder. Neither religion or "science" really answers it.

I wanted to ride a motorcycle until I realized that they cost as much as a car, and I figured a car was better.

I've actually changed my opinion about some people here. There were a
few who I didn't get along with a long while ago, but then, as I got to know
them, discovered that they were really cool people and have become some
of my favorite folks here. I won't mention any names because that's just not
cool, but they know who they are.

Thank you for showing me a side of yourselves that I didn't get at first.

Just goes to show you...sometimes you can be wrong about somebody.

I agree with Steven, I have flip-flopped on a bunch of people.

I think its easy to judge people by what they do, say, act, wear etc but at the end of the day, its best to judge by intentions, which are normally not known until you get to know somebody better, which takes time - hence the flip-flopping.

I was also a proud Pepsi fan as a kid and now if its not Coke, I'm not drinking it!!

I don't think I've ever met anyone who hasn't changed viewpoints over time on at least some issues.

I used to flip-flop on people in the sense that I would trust them and then find out I was being naive. Now I think I don't always give people enough credit for being honest when they deserve it. Comes with baggage, I guess.

My most base ideologies are pretty much the same as always though other than I have flipped in and out of being interested in politics a few times in my life. That's what I started school for, then I got completely disinterested for about 25 years and now I'm flaming politically motivated again. Go figure.

My flip flopping has been in religion and politics as well, so let's avoid that, shall we?

Computer codes used to terrify me. What if I did something wrong or messed something up? Well, screw that, I'm now using it all the time. The trick is to back everything up any time you make any sort of changes to anything. It will not launch any nuclear missiles and my computer won't emit deadly gasses.

Sure. When facts emerge that convincingly and overwhelmingly disprove something I believe, I'll change my mind. Dogma is not cool, in my book.
