Internet is a collection of inter-networked computer systems that spans the entire globe. It depends on several sets of rules called protocols. These protocols make it possible for computer communication across networks. It also relies on a huge infrastructure of routers, Network Access Points (NAPs) and computer systems. Then there are the satellites, miles of cable and hundreds of wireless routers that transmit signals between computers and networks.

The founder is the US army...

The origins of the Internet reach back to the 1960s with both private and United States military research into robust, fault-tolerant, and distributed computer networks. The funding of a new U.S. backbone by the National Science Foundation, as well as private funding for other commercial backbones, led to worldwide participation in the development of new networking technologies, and the merger of many networks. The commercialization of what was by then an international network in the mid 1990s resulted in its popularization and incorporation into virtually every aspect of modern human life. As of 2009, an estimated quarter of Earth's population used the services of the Internet.

The Internet was created and controlled by 2 USA government agencies ARPANET, and DARPANET, funded by United States citizens tax dollars. I worked on the project at Stanford Research Institute , in 1978 until 1983 , and Al Gore was no where to be seen, trust me on that.

There were other institutes, universities , also involved ... but the main reason for it, was to
create an entity that could maintain communications if there were a major attack against the
USA. Hence, we had packet switching networks , that could evolve new network paths on the
fly , to ensure data delivery between any points on the network ( internet ) . Now aren't you sorry
    you asked ... LOL

So, that is who created it, and funded it. I guess you can say to some extent it's beginning's were
" owned " by USA citizens, because they paid for it.

Anyway, I gotta go take some geritol, all this typing has worn me out... ;-)

While they may well have been the leading American teams, America was certainly not the only country working on a version of the internet.

None of the earlier attempts where much use though, until Tim Berners Lee invented the Hyper Textual Transfer Protocol (http) that actually made it work.

With this in mind I would argue that while America may have invented, or contributed to the invention of the toilet seat. Tim Berners Lee (English) invented the hole in the middle. :p

I think it is more important to focus on who controls, rather than who owns it, after all China managed to take control over a large part of it recently.

If you were restricted from the Internet because your government deemed you a non citizen as is becoming common in the UK, then the matter of who owns it is secondary to who can actually control your use of the Internet.

The authorities will let us worry about who owns it, whilst they decide who is allowed access to it.

I can sell you internet property at a reasonable pixel price if you are interested. Closeouts pixels actually from someone else who over ordered and so I have about 10 million pixel units left over from a buyback, tried to sell them to wal mart, but of course they got some from a chinese seller who undercut me... hit me up if you want some, they are still in good condition even though they are buy backs.

Of course it's the flying spaghetti monster. What do you think the spaghetti arms are for?

No seriously: There is no such thing as THE internet. It is a mass of networks all connected together.

It's like asking who owns all the streets on the world. Of course a certain street belongs to a country or company (private streets) but you can still get from A to B when a street is blocked, you can drive around that blockade, use another route - that's exactly how the internet works.

That's why it is so hard to remove certain unwanted websites - the internet has no center, no single point of failure.

The Internet is a giant system made up of much smaller systems. If it's one thing, does it have a single owner? Is there some person or entity that controls the Internet? Is it possible for someone to own something that spans nations and oceans?

The Internet is like a pie, and anyone who has put any content on the Internet owns a piece of it. Some companies own the majority of the Internet because their services are in such high demand. Most people own such a small fraction of the pie that their share is not even worth a penny. Where do you stand?
