Purchacing the product you are promoting

So what is the general feeling about purchacing a product that you are promoting as an affiliate in order secure the discount. Frowned on? Done regularly by you? Despicable behavior?

    To be frank, I seldom buy the product I'm promoting. But sometimes I do. I usually think, you should know the product first, and then you can tell others about it. If you don't even know, what you said to others won't be persuacive.

    There's a product I want to review on my niche blog. I never review anything unless I've read it/watched it/tried it. No review copy forthcoming.

    So, my choices are to grab a copy using my affiliate link so I can write an honest review for the readers of my tightly targeted site who are likely to be very interested in this product, or to walk away and find something else to review.

    Wonder which the product creator would prefer?

    Buying something from your own affiliate ID is frowned on universally as far as I know.

    Apples and oranges = earning commissions vs. giving yourself a discount

    I did it once and it was years ago but ClickBank withheld all my money for what seemed like years until I got to a certain dollar amount because I had done that. (I don't sell much ClickBank obviously) - and it taught me a lesson.

    However I do think it is a super idea to use the products you are promoting. You can obviously be a lot more genuine if you are actually speaking about something you know by experience rather than just writing words you hope are compelling.
