Nice, Laura. I just love puns.
Since Reagan implemented an Executive Order in the 1980's never to adopt the Metric System as the official system of measurement in the United States, I can only tell you that I weigh 196 lbs. (on a good day). ;-)

I never heard about that, WHY would he do such a thing? We STILL have things measured in metric, or both.

Funny how the US is maybe the only place to still use the BRITISH system!

Hard to explain! I am thinking about going on the TKD diet. It is similar to what I did before but a bit easier on the system, etc... With what I did before I lost an average of 1lb of fat a day.

            You don't weigh in between 60 and 65 - You either weigh 60 or 61, 62, 63, 64 or 65. Be precise...

    Well,what country are you from?

The profile picture, which is what I'm assuming you are basing your opinion on,and thanks by the way, was taken before I started dialysis.
That said, I do get complimented often on how well I look.

If you'd like to read my about my situation, go to www.majskidney.com and you will see a semi-picture or me doing a treatment.
As an FYI, I do dialysis 6 times a week so it IS a part of my weekly procedure.

Steve, do you do dialysis? Of course, if you want to discuss this or anything else through PM its always welcome.
Treatment time varies due to weight. I've never been a heavy guy, I think at my heaviest I weighed about 165 or 170.
My dialisys takes up 3 hours of every day. About 30 minutes getting ready, aproximately 2 hours on the machine and another 30 minutes stopping the bleeding and cleaning up ( no folks, I don;'t mean cleaning up blood).
When I was doing it in center, I was on the machine 3 hours. But I was also from talking to the nurses the only one with that short of a treatment. There were some very heavy set people that came in that would start at 6am and still be doing treatment at 2 PM when I was getting finished, and my treatment was starting at 11am.
I'm not bragging but I am one of the healthiest looking kidney failure paitients you would ever see. If you didn't know I was sick ,you can't tell most days by looking at me. Not all, but most. The biggest tell tale signs are the needleholes in my arm where I get stuck every day and the scar down my arm from my surgery.
Whew...didn't mean to get so long winded! I can talk about this forever now it seems. When it first happened I was angry and held it all inside me. Not anymore. If I can answer anyones questions nowadays, I try!

            Excellent question!
            Short answer:yes and no.
            Real Answer:
I have three options, if I had some money and actually wasnted to go away fro a vacation type trip of several days or a couple of weeks, I can make arrangements to have the treatments at a local center. But most centers at the typical vacation places are booked years in advance. Another option is to have supplies ship to whereever I went.
The third option is to take the machine with me as it is suppose to be portable. But what is suppose to be and what really is can be two different things. I can't lift more that 15-20 lbs nowadays due to the surgery and the fistula in my arm. The fistula is literally my lifeline. Might be a pic of that on the blog too, I don't remember.
Anyways, I can't lift more than 20 and the machine itself weighs 70 lbs.
So,technically yes I can travel, but realisticaly, no.

Darn! Yeah that does sound tough. I felt invincible most of my life. I thought nothing could ever happen to me. But then one day, a friend of mine was diagnosed with a kidney disease. He's healthier than me, works hard, exercises regularly, eats well, etc. His full physicals showed him as being fit as a fiddle but out of nowhere, something like this happens to him. And when I saw that happen to him, now I feel deep down that it could happen to me too. It's pretty scary when you think about these things and about what life can throw at you on any given day.

NO, but I DO work at a LARGE international firm that deals with supporting and providing dialysis services/equipment. Heck, if you haven't dealt with them, you may in the not so distant future. But I DO end up seeing some statistics. Luckily, pretty much all my problems are ones I have discussed here. They are BAD, but STILL not as bad as I think yours are. But yeah, like you, anyone here could end up on dialysis QUICKLY!

BTW in case anyone is curious, I am working on, and supporting a system to tie many disparate systems together and tie them into one warehouse and reporting system, since they had a lot of mergers.

That certainly makes sense, but wasn't apparent here. I think the 4 hours is just what I heard bandied about. We generally deal with days. I actually sit within 20 feet of 3-4 dialysis machines all day. I doubt they are running most of the time and, of course, nobody is hooked up to them. It is just to test the user interface and communication with everything else. They are different versions of machines that are supported.

I guess with setup time and all we're talking the 4 hours again that I've been hearing about.

Like I said, you seem to be doing it more often, so I figure the toxins have less of a chance to affect you. Outside of bedtime, a person has the toxins in their bodies about 4-6 hours, and most of them are in the bladder. Most people on dialysis have them there a lot longer, and I doubt they are in the bladder, since it gets there through the kidneys. I guess that is why you said you don't drink much due to this.

Read your blog. As you described, it does indeed seem really tough having to go through it daily but it basically becomes a way of life and you have to find a way to accept it. I've seen people with the same problem. One day you can be jumping out of bed, going for jogs, going swimming and enjoying your life...the next day you're hit with something you never expected to ever happen to you. Life can completely collapse on you at any moment it seems. Just shows how fragile we really are.
      Cheers mate!

"Don't you have a Cannula or something to prevent all the needle sticks? I'm not sure exactly how they work, or even if they are appropriate, but I thought they might do that."

I know what you mean but don't know the exact term for it. As you know I do hemo-dialysis which means through the veins. There are various means of accessing the vein. What you are talking about I think is like a piece of garden hose (for lack of a better term)they insert that can handle the needles on a regular basis.
What they did with me was cut a vein from the lower part of my arm and literally moved it to just under the surface.
When you are in center they use a different location to stick you every time, which leaves the area actually looking almost perforated.
Doing it at home we use the same spot day after day for about 6 months then need to start new spots. I don't know where they get the term from, but they call those spots buttonholes.

Long story but here's the short version.
After finding out the kidney issue turned out I also had cancer of the prostate. When that was reported I was taken off the transplant list. No big deal because basically I was put on the transplant list and told I had cancer about the same week. Anyways, after I had the cancer removed, the transplant unit requires someone to be cancer free for 2 years before they get put back on the list. That two years will be up in November.

Oh ok! Good good! Glad to hear you got the cancer taken care of. Once your kidney issue is taken care of, I expect you'll be doing a little hiking, a little mountain climbing, a lot of traveling, etc!

Exactly. I don't ever deny this. Not after what I've seen with a lot of friends and distant relatives. Health comes before all else.

Hi Kim, I am really sympathetic toward your dialysis issue, since my mother also had dialysis three times a week.
I really hope you keep strong until november, when you can look for a kidney.
Where do you live and what is the best way to find a kidney?

Most questions can be answered in my blog ,the adress is in my sig.
Quick answer is I can get back on the transplant list in November. From what I understand someone is usually on the list about 5 years before they get a transplant unless they have a live donor.

Kidneys are received usually one of 2 ways. Ones that are donated from an organ donor that has died somehow.
Or from a live donor. A live donor is usually, but not always, a family member or a living relative.

Best way to find a kidney?
I've tried looking under rocks, but to no avail!

In space you would weigh nothing ...but would have
    the same mass and inertia.

Weight is down to the local gravity.
Mass is down to muscle, bones and burgers ))

Do not be alarmed by your weight unless you check against the body mass index. (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.

It really isn't, Mawahib. It's just the so-called "basal metabolic index": it's purely a function of the relation between height and weight and is actually entirely unrelated to the proportion (or indeed quantity) of body fat people have, which (unlike some other metabolic parameters) it doesn't purport to measure at all.
