Just saw a story where GE shut down the last factory in the USA that built incandecent light bulbs. That factory was in the largest town near me, Winchester, Virginia.

That's right, there is not going to be another incandecent light bulb built in the USA, ever.

Sorta brings a tear to your eye...

Do you remember some years ago when it was decided by those in power that we needed "low flush" toilets?

Never mind the first models didn't work worth a crap, so to speak.

There was a big market created for a while in used toilets - people were installing them in their new homes! A fellow who ran one of the salvage places with building products told me he sold old toilets that had been sitting out behind his building for years!

A few weeks ago, I stocked up on light bulbs. Yes, probably not the green thing to do but I turn them off when I leave a room

      Kay,

My dad has bought a bunch of those cheap '7 year squiggly bulb' replacements for ordinary 40 to 100 watt bulbs at a cost of perhaps 5 times (just a guess) what the normal bulbs cost.

They last about half the amount of time.

Yup, it's the new definition of progress...

I guess it's "progress lite", sorta like beer, only without the bikini clad spokesperson.

How many people from Delaware does it take to screw in a light bulb?

    Both.

LOL. An old buddy of mine used to describe small countries as "If they got in a war with Rhode Island they'd lose".

I wonder if Rhode Island could beat up Delaware...

Well, I HATE the way fluorescent lights blink when they go bad, etc... HECK, the incandescent STARTED the light industry, and may well have been the thing that started the idea of ELECTRICITY in homes! And it only got better.

As for the low flush toilets? YEAH, more flushes, etc... RIDICULOUS! And I LOVE the ones at airports, etc... that flush automatically. I have seen over a dozen that WEREN'T flushed, and at least 3 that CONSTANTLY flushed. At least 3 that flushed inappropriately. And close to 95% of the remainder flushed when they didn't have to! I love the ones that flush like 3 times before you sit down, and 3 times as you are leaving. OH, and in chicago they have ones that pull a plastic tube around the seat, supposedly to stay cleaner.

Do they REALLY save water? Are they REALLY cleaner? Are they REALLY more environmentally friendly?

As for the new lights? They have POISONS, like mercury, in the tube! NOT environmentally friendly!
