Ok ... after a year of ScrewsNet and a year of dialup and an AT&T WiFi fiasco that didn't work, I bought a Droid X, tethered it to both my laptop and my Desktop PC and get pretty fast Internet from the Droid X.

... and that is out here in cow town. Hooray!

I'm stuck in a rural area too and I have to use Sprint EVDO cellular internet. Luckily I joined BEFORE they put in limit caps so as long as I never have to renew my contract for some reason (such as a hardware upgrade) I am one of the few people with truly unlimited cellular internet in this area.

I am amazed you did not have a cell phone. Out of all the things we talk about to make or meet business challenges that are here or coming, we still need the technology to act on it.

lol ... I hate talking on the phone. I've never needed phone service to conduct business on the Internet and I've been doing it for over 11 years.

However, there's still no getting around the data cap limits, if you exceed it by a large margin you're still going to wind up making Verizon awfully suspicious.
Paulie ... Skid Roe .. I just checked and my plan says unlimited Internet and email, so it looks like I don't have to worry about it.

Did you check to see if that applies to tethering as well? For all carriers here, mobile web access on the phone and tethering access are considered two different things altogether.

Congratulations are in order for finally making it out of the stone ages, Suzanne! lol...I've heard nothing but bad things about Hughesnet, and dial up must have been even worse.

Just keep in mind that you have a 2Gb cap PER month, because it is REALLY easy to exceed that especially if you watch videos and use your phone for other high bandwidth activities. I know of at least 3 friends that received shocking overage fees from Verizon (think $200-$400 tacked onto your phone bill!) after playing with their 3G toys a little too much.

I think Verizon provides tools for you to monitor your usage. I can tell you from experience that the main things which eat up bandwidth are videos and big downloads (i.e. music and video, especially webinar recordings!)

        Hi,

Unless you have different plans than we do here your data plan is unlimited for anything you do on your phone. Your 2 gig limit is for when you use your PC tethered to your phone.

So If you want to download a huge file for instance, download it to your droid's sd card then cut and paste it to your pc. If you want to upload something, copy and paste it to your phone and FTP it from there.

They have apps to download Youtube videos and as I said before check out the pda app, it's amazing on my eris, don't know if it works for unlimited on the X though.

Anything you can think of look for an app to do it. Even if you want to run certain Windows programs, check out iSilo

Anyway if you download to phone then transfer to PC you should never go over your 2 gigs, unless as I said your plan is different than what we have here.

LOL, I've tried them all. No favorites I just like to play a few times delete and download some more. So far I've only played the free games though.

Half the posting I do on the WF is from my droid. I don't like to post directly on the forum though, I have a app called AK notepad, I use that to compose and copy and paste to the forum.

One of my goals to do just for the heck of it is create a product (ebook) and sell it online. Complete product from start to sale from my droid.

Also there is a free photoshop app that really makes the pics you take much better. You can enhance them, crop them and frame them all on the droid.

Something you can do on your droid that you can't even do on your pc is download the gmail app and see and manage all of your gmail accounts at once. You don't have to log in and out of your accounts they are all always open (I have about 20) and you can see at a glance which ones have mail and check and read your mail with a click. I don't even read my email on my PC anymore.

I could go on all night about this, but I won't

George Wright, P.S. you can make phone calls too.

Sounds like you're my Droid Go To Guy. Definitely interested in the Photoshop and the FTP app. Didn't find the ftp last night, but will keep on looking. Dusted off my laptop that I haven't used in ages because of the dialup thing and it works great with the Droid too.

OMG ... Skype ... I'm not ready for that. I haven't used the Droid for phone calls so far. Haven't even given the number out. I personally hate yakking on the phone ... except for talking to the kids.

Yes, careful with that. I know someone who bought an unlimited calling plan on his cell and hooked it up to his laptop. Turned out he hadn't read about the data charges and he wound up with an $1100 bill.

This was nearly 3 years ago, definitely not a droid, so not sure how much of it applies to your situation.

    Congratulations,

I know the feeling. Are you using the Droid as a hot spot or are you using pda (search pda in the marketplace)

I have a Droid Eris and Can't wait til I get the Droid X or the Samsung Droid (which I hear has a better picture.) I do love my Eris, but you know "gotta have the latest and greatest" at upgrade time.

Again congrats, by the way in case you haven't figured it out yet you can get an FTP program for your X, again search the marketplace for FTP and you can upload huge files.

Just to give you some figures to mull over, the average 1+ hr webinar recording eats up almost 10% of your 2Gb monthly allotment (depending on quality, it can take up anywhere from about 120 to 180 Megabytes).

I have an iphone 4 that does wireless tethering and love it! I try to spend as much time as I can up at my cottage that has no internet. It works brilliantly, nearly as fast as my cable connection at home. Streaming video is a dream!

I'm in Canada and get 6 GB of data for $30 a month on my iPhone and tethering is no extra cost. Coolest thing is getting work done online during a long car ride (where your not the one driving of course lol)

All I need is for apple to let my iPhone 4 tether to my wifi iPad and I'm in heaven!

No .... I downloaded PDANet and connect with that instead of paying the extra $20/mnth to use it as a hotspot. I did spring for a pretty expensive cell booster to get better signal.

Funny thing is ... AT&T lied and told me I had great coverage out here with their network so I bought the cell booster and an aircard. Didn't get anywhere and had to rush to test everything out to return it before 3 days so I wasn't locked into a 2 year contract.

Verizon's map shows no coverage here, but when I was testing the AT&T system out, a friend came over and hooked up his Droid to his laptop and was downloading music and talking on the cell at the same time. I was in shock! So I duplicated his system and it works.

Thanks for the tip on the ftp program. I'll look for that.

They've ALREADY done this! STAPLES is selling verizon EVDO modems using verizon with a tiered plan! Looked good, until I realized I am paying less than 20% more for twice the data and *I* went over a few times. They claimed MY plan was unlimited though, so I didn't get charged.

Suzanne, just be sure to check the terms and conditions of your Verizon 3G data usage contract. George may be on an older contract where the terms might have been a little different - both AT&T and Verizon have made changes to their data usage plans recently this year, and what applies to George may not apply to you.

Wow, I thought that you guys in Canada and the USA were streets ahead of us here in the UK in regard to communications. Evidently not.

I suspect though it's due to the size and topography of your countries, compared to our small clump of wet islands in the UK.

I pay the equivalent of $12 for 8 gig of unlimited broadband per month. Due to my distance from the telephone exchange however, I can never receive more than 4 gig. That's a pain in the ass as far as I'm concerned, but a lot better than some other WF posters receive, it seems.

But then we're Warriors so we can manage with what we have, I guess!

Suzanne has said before she lives in the sticks but still amazing that it is not as sophisticated as we believe the whole country is.

I get an 4mbps line with a rental of $80 a month comes with 4 gigabytes. There after it is $3 a gigabyte. So not a bad deal seeing that I am in Africa

Cathy, you may have misunderstood what Suzanne is talking about. The limits refer to the data usage on her 3G cellphone, not a fixed cable or DSL line. The fixed cable/DSL lines here pretty much all come with unlimited usage.

    Ok.

Now I am very excited. I got to play with one last week. VERY cool. I'm like a kid in a candy store. I was all over Swype. Very fun.

However, I can't upgrade until January 23rd so let me just say that is going to be a BIG day. My wife is sick of hearing about it. People aren't allowed to say "Droid X" around me.

And here I thought my LG Chocolate 3 was cool and advanced. (Although, you should see the looks I get when just for fun I take it out, open it *clam-shell phone* and pretend to start swyping and flicking my finger all around...they either think I'm an idiot - sometimes true - or think I have an even newer cooler phone that has like dual screens.)

Anyway, I can't wait to try it out. sbucciarel and George, I am soooo jealous.

At least I'll bet you guys don't have an awesome jelly donut like I have right now.

At least I'll bet you guys don't have an awesome jelly donut like I have right now.
      lol ... No, I don't have a jelly donut
Fun to see this kind of excitement over the Droid. It was sold out in Verizon stores and Best Buy ... everywhere, but I went to the Verizon Online and bought it and it was here THE NEXT DAY!

Uhh....Next day?! I had no idea it was hard to get. Now I know I'm going to have to order it.

Although the way these things go, Droid X 2 will be out in Nov. followed by Droid X3 in Jan. hehe.

I'll bet if you're like me sbucciarel you haven't stopped playing with it? I wouldn't. Way too fun.

But here's a question for all of you. It looks like the Verizon plan IS unlimited for data but maybe only for phone as George said? How does Verizon know then that you've tethered it for pc use?

I just checked the plan (and am searching around) site and it looks OK so far. Any thoughts?

Also, after searching around about this completely awesome idea you found out about, do you have to do what is apparently called "rooting" of your phone? And is that bad?

(And now even my donut is all gone. Oh well.)

I read that if you use tethering and PDA.net that the data is unlimited. I'm going to make sure before I bank on that though.

Yeah ... there isn't a Droid on the shelf anywhere in Northern Virginia. When I went to Best Buy for accessories and told him for Droid X he looked shocked I had one, but online ... it was shipped in exactly 3 hours with overnight FedEX delivery.

I read that rooting can break your phone and void the warranty and that PDA.net was the next best alternative for tethering.

That's what PDA.net claims, but if you go by Verizon's terms your tethering data usage is definitely limited to 2Gb per month. Basically with PDA.net you're bypassing Verizon's app which monitors your data usage over your tether - and this is definitely not something that Verizon condones. If you go all crazy and end up using an inordinately large amount of data on your account, Verizon can't help but notice this usage. Although they may not be able to tell that the usage came from tethering, they're definitely going to sit up and take notice because of the unusual activity!

I believe that even PDA.net has a disclaimer about this, so tread very carefully if you decide to go down this route.

This is because everyone assumes that when your device is tethered, it can use your computer's broadband connection instead of the wireless network.

Except your computer doesn't have one, so this doesn't apply.

We dealt with this question at Microsoft when I was on the Kin QA team, and they were talking about relaxing bandwidth constraints when the phone was tethered. After looking carefully at the requirements I asked "What if the phone is tethered to a PC with no internet connection?"

The meeting ended early and an updated spec review was scheduled.

I have grave concerns about the QA process on mobile devices these days, because over time I have found more and more glaringly obvious flaws in mobile devices. I think too many people are entering the market who don't know WTF they're doing.

OK cool. I didn't even know what rooting was. You'll have to let us know about the data plan thing.

As far as I can tell it looks "OK" for unlimited via phone. So I would guess (but not count on for myself) that through the pc is no different.

It looks like for now, the $29.99 plan is unlimited for the phone. And the $20 extra a month for the hotspot service is capped at the 2 gigs. Hmm...

Just to clarify, PDA.net will allow you to tether without additional charges (most carriers will slap an extra charge on your bill just for tethering - I believe Verizon charges an extra $30 per month for this privilege), and this will let you tether without having to pay the additional charge. However, there's still no getting around the data cap limits, if you exceed it by a large margin you're still going to wind up making Verizon awfully suspicious.

I have a droid mytouch with tmobile. For only $30 extra a month *I say extra but they tell you it's required...* you get unlimited Data and data transfer. It sounds different but I am not so sure about it..

I just found this article earlier today. Not sure how to combine what you guys are saying but it's food for thought.

As I've mentioned above, it is definitely possible to hide the fact that you're tethering from your carrier (with an Android phone anyway), but not if you're using massive amounts of data. I'm quoting directly from the article that you posted above -

"And, just between you and me, most carriers won't actually know you're tethering unless you suddenly start downloading copious amounts of data over your newfound connection."

Well, that's the key. I don't download music or movies ... not interested in webinars or marketing videos. My usage is mostly for research (browsing), news, and creating websites. When I'm in a real hurry (or on dialup), I turned off images and javascript to get just the text and pages loaded quickly on dialup doing it like that.

I seriously doubt that my normal usage is going to raise red flags.

          Suzanne,

Congrats on the X. It's time for me to replace my LG flip phone and that's one of the models I looked at.

The Droid X is probably the biggest phone I've seen. Is it awkward carrying it around or do you just get used to it?

I've had it for what ... 3 days now ... I've used it primarily as my Internet connection (the only actual phone call I made on it so far was to myself (the land line) to make sure it actually functioned as a phone)... lol.

Carried it to a store and back once. I'm a girl so I have a purse. It slips neatly into a little pocket in my purse. They probably sell one of the holster things for people who don't carry a purse.

I've always thought I should carry a purse. It would be so useful. I could keep all kinds of useful stuff with me all the time. I'm jealous of how chicks get to tote all kinds of things around with them in a purse, and I have to get by with what I can stick in my pockets or hang on my belt.

I know exactly what you mean, but unfortunately over here in the US these purses are derided with derogatory terms such as "man-purse" and imbue you with a certain effeminate quality. I have been envious of all the things women can stuff into their purses or handbags, but until that social stigma goes away I'm not so sure I'd want to be carrying a "man-purse" around.

Hey ... us chicks have had to live with pe*is envy all our lives ... get over it. Now you have to live with purse envy.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming ... yesterday was my first full day of Droid X Internet and it was incredibly great ... thanks for the video links Caliban ...
