Why I Can't Be Funny

One of the rules about being funny is that anyone who laughs at one's own jokes has spoiled the humor and, as a result, is not funny. I amuse myself all the time and laugh at my own jokes a lot. That means that I am not at all funny.

    • Laughing at your own jokes is like letting air out of truck tires. It's just a plain bad idea and could be dangerous, especially if the truck drivers catch you doing it.
  • This is not even remotely true.

One of the funniest jokes I ever heard goes like this:
A bear and a rabbit are taking a crap in the woods.

The bear says, "Does sh*t ever stick to your fur?"

    The rabbit says "No."

So the bear wiped his arse with the rabbit.
But when I first saw Don Imus tell this joke on stage, he kept cracking up and having to start over.

It took him three tries to get through the first line.

It took him four more to get through the second.

And it took him two more to even START the fourth line.

Which he delivered through an absolute gale of uncontrolled laughter.

He had to BACK UP AND TRY AGAIN fully ten times before he got this joke out.

I'd never accuse either this joke or Don Imus of not being funny.

I would, however, say that Don Imus is not my personal favourite kind of funny... but lots of people like him, and I understand why.

    • I went to see my Aunt today.. she is 82 and lives in a care home. I go at dinner time so that I can crush up the pills and hide it in her food.. I feel sneaky but if she got pregnant there'd be hell to pay.
    • I just told your bear/rabbit joke to my baby. He laughed just on cue at the punchline. I doubt he understood a word I was saying, but I guess I got the intonation right. Do you find this video funny?

  • I try to give my jokes a bit of a chuckle and a smile. If you bust your gut laughing though, it just ruins the smooth feeling of a joke.
