I saw a thread of Mr Wagenheim's and in it he and others said they do not drink alcohol.

I am also one of those who does not drink at all anymore, and wondered about how many others there were

    Hi Cathy,

I've never liked drinking liquor. Just don't like the feeling or the taste
of it. I'll have a glass of wine, or two, with dinner once in a while.

I think the last time I had a glass of wine was about 5 or 6 years, ago.

    I don't eat dinner often.

I am 30 years old and I don't drink. I can't stand the taste of alchohol. My husband thinks I should drink wine once a year on special occasions, but I don't even do that. I got drunk one time when I was a teen and that since then I've avoided alcohol. Yuck!

I was a qt. of Jack a night drinker.
I quit around 20 years ago.
I'll have a glass of wine on occasion and I like Irish cream in my coffee or on coffee ice cream every now and then.

I certainly don't drink any more. In fact, I drink a lot less. I was like Thom, and now I can't figure out why I put my body through all that trouble. Give me a few beers a night and a bottle of wine once a week and I'm good to go.

I'll have wine on occasion, once in a great while a beer, and on vacation found I liked Mike's black cherry hard lemonade and had 3 of them...over 2 days time

I used to have 2-3 drinks almost daily but it was mainly because of people I hung out with. My drink then was vodka-tonic.

I have nothing against drinking but prefer a coke or iced tea myself. What I don't like are drunks and I won't spend time around them.

I rarely drink wine with dinner or lunch - maybe a few times a year at the most. I do get loaded when I do that and I do have fun, but then suffer the consequences. I love Irish Cream maybe on a holiday...

I never have been much of a drinker. (it makes me sick)

For some reason been involved with a few alcoholics and it wasn't any fun - easy to get over them (like Thank God I am free).

i was a pretty bad alcoholic for about 10-11 years... i quit drinking around 1.5 years ago. i would like to believe that one day i can drink socially again, but inside i know that is not true.

my life is much less complicated now, for example not having to worry about driving to work drunk every morning (from the night before).

on the other hand, It is also much more boring. sleeping is also much more difficult.

when all is said and done, i am happy to be sober now.

Like many I drank a lot when I was young.

Now, if I drink anything it's usually a beer. And usually one on New Years Eve, and one during the summer at a barbecue.

Just don't like the effects any more. :p

I still drink...nothing wrong with it in moderation. I quite often walk to my local pub (10 secs away) sit in the garden and one pint.....It's great.
On the odd occossion I go out with friends etc...I really curb it down these days. Children at home and the hangovers are so bad now even after 4 beers so I keep it way down.

But all the TT...nah...... In moderation beer is fine.

I hardly ever drink anymore. I never fell for the whole getting drunk thing.

I personally see it as a complete waste of time and money. And you waste more time on drinking than just the time you're actually drinking.

You'll feel like a trainwreck AFTER it wears off as well as the day after. I don't like to feel slow or aggravated so I just lay off it.

I don't see how people can drink 6 packs+ everyday (I have friends that can handle this) and still function normally lol.

uhmm Well what can i say i drink when i feel for it.
And when i do i do it heavy but in the end we only live once and i got ALOT of baggage
and it seems i handle a part of it each time.
As long i dont "have" to drink i am good like today i tought i go to sleep in middle of remaking a linux distro i decided to day is a good day to drink i took out the hidden beers (lol hidden hide from myself do i)
and started pooring why not if there is one single reason not to i would stay away.
But so far i havent seen a normal alcohol drinker die sooner then a non drinker.
Sure if you are alcoholic you,ll end up whit brain damage and liver failure.
same as any drug or any med its all the same there is USE and ABUSE
besides some beer keeps the hearth healthy and i can verify that whit a born heart problem. the months i get some beer i am fine the others i get theese ZOMG &(/%¤&#/(%&#/(% i,m gonna die feelings of pain (rythm disorder suppousedly)
Beer/wine/whiskey/what not is good in SMALL amounts (not that i obide to the small myself)

I'm not even old enough to legally drink. :p

I'm way past the "Let's party and get drunk!" stage of life, despite not having entered it yet. All I'm looking forward to is being able to get into places where I'm legally allowed to go like concerts, dances, club meetings, and Halloween parties so I can socialize without drinking myself. Though I do expect I'll have a Bailey's now and again.

I can go weeks without touching a drop. Then I'll have a night and I can easily get through one or two bottles of wine, a fair few double JD Sailor Jerry and coke, a few pints, Jager shots .... basically a big binge starting in the afternoon. I know that's not good for me, I am aware that too, but it's a hell of a lot of fun too. Besides having a high tolerance, so it takes a lot to get me drunk, lets be honest is the main reason most people enjoy.

        I like beer, not wine

Beer is good while having cold.

Beer has bactericidal behavior, if you drink warm beer while having cold or flu, it is possible to recover faster. In Medieval times during plague and cholera epidemic brewery workers rarely were ill. And while having toothache before teeth were rinsed with beer.

I was in a "program" for the restoration of resources. Basically, the meeting is 3 times a week. I know I'm not an alcoholic, but there are some here in the past the problems caused by alcohol for me. I have no impulse to drink, go out with friends several times no problem. In fact, this is an interesting to see, when you sober.I miss marijuana though.I will probably never give up drinking, but it is certainly the next few years. I think my personality has developed a bit better, because I quit.

I drink very socially, and when I do it's controlled and I
have NEVER been drunk. A little buzzed, but that's all.

Even than...I HATE to drink because of one reason:

    NO CONTROL!

I don't like having control over situations I CAN control,
and drinking puts you in situations and a state of mind
you can't control even if you wanted to.

There's power in having control over your thoughts and
mind without artificially altering your state of concious.

I have friends who can only pick up women with alchohol,
but the TRUE test and experience is doing things like that
    without it.

Parties and clubs are the same way.

Anyways, those are my feelings about alchohol.

Compared to a lot of my friends, I began drinking at quite a late age. Didn't really drink at all (and certainly not in pubs/bars/clubs) until I was around 19.

It was all downhill from there.

Until about 1 month ago, every week I went out (often alone, being quite introverted and easily irritated by so-called "friends") to pubs, bars and clubs, and got drunk beyond belief. 3-day hangovers aren't good.

Trying to tone that down a little bit, anyway.

But yeah... I do like to drink... and often have a lot of fun when I'm smashed... but I don't like the hangovers, or the waking up next day with dried blood all over my arm and wondering what the hell happened, etc

EDIT: I smoke too. Often got through 30 cigarettes on a night out, and that's excluding cigars. Not good. When not out I will usually only smoke a pack of 10 or so over the entire week.... or sometimes I don't smoke at all.

I'ts something i'm really dedicated to trying to cut down on now. I literally have to ignore phone-calls from my mates on weekends because they know how weak minded i can be. Interesting subject. I don't drink either and I am amazed and rather enjoy reading that so many others do not either. Especially these wonderful young people who have learned it does alter ones awareness and affects their ability to lead a more successful life (if it is excessive of course). It can become a illness like so many other outside influences that we indulge in. It actually scares me to think about those who cannot be without it.

On the contrary, I think it can be a great release at times, and inspire creativity (as can certain drugs, so I'm told - though I've never really done them).

I know a lot of comedians, writers, philosophers and people in creative professions have been quoted as crediting their "genius" to mind-altering substances.

I think often many people experience anxieties that arise from being too self-critical and contrived, when in a completely sober / "clear-minded" state. Certain substances let down those barriers and get the "brain juices flowing".

Personally, I actually play guitar much better after I've had a few drinks.

That said, it's not necessarily the case for everyone.

I don't like the taste of alcohol so I don't drink.

I have also cut out any drinks with calories in them as it makes it easier to stick with a lower calorie eating plan long term. Even if I did like alcohol, I would have given it up just like I did with other drinks with calories in them.

Socially it's not a problem at all. People never actually question me or even ask my reasons. I have only had to on a few occasions ever explain why I didn't drink and most of the time it was a 10 second explanation and they person was fine with my thinking.

Do you know that two thirds of your body is made up of water. Without water we would die. Some estimates say that the average person could die without water in 4 days. We need to drink water every day because we lose it from our bodies in many different ways. We can lose up to 3 litres of water every day through sweating, urinating and even when we breathe.
The body can also produce a litre of water to process, digest and absorb the food we eat. However, the body loses more water than it can produce. In some cases it is estimated that the average person could be short of between 1 to 2 litres of water a day.
Water plays an important role in cleansing the body of by products and waste. Water supports the functions of the liver and kidney to rid the body of toxins. If our bodies have a lack of water it can lead to many side affects which you may be familiar with. Lack of water in the body leads to dehydration. Dehydration can cause conditions such as tiredness, headaches, constipation and mental fog.
Water plays an important role in regulating the body's temperature. A lack of water can make your body hotter which can lower your ability to focus and concentrate. Long term dehydration can also lead to other conditions that can include ulcers and aching joints. It can also increase the levels of allergic reactions such as asthma.
Many people drink water when they feel thirsty. However, the thirst signal is not an accurate indicator because your body is already dehydrated. When you do a lot of physical exercise you also use up a lot more liquid to produce energy and you lose a lot through sweating. During physical activities you should be drinking more water to make up for this loss.
Drinking more water than your body needs can be as unhealthy as drinking too little. Drinking too much water can put added stress and pressure on certain organs such as the liver and the kidneys. In some cases too much water or over hydration can even kill you. Excess water can also wash out too much sodium from our bodies. Sodium is very important to maintain the health and functioning of the body and its organs.
So how much water should we be drinking to maintain a healthily functioning body? It is recommended that we should drink 6 to 8 250 millilitres of fresh clean filtered water per day.

I have never had a drink and I never will. For all of you people out there who drink, please don't drink and drive. Six months ago I was on my way home from work. I had worked overtime that Friday night. A drunk driver was driving down the wrong way on the interstate and guess who he hit head on? Me. I died at the scene and luckily for me the paramedic didn't give up on me. I owe him my life. After months in the hospital I am still rehabilitating and doubt if I will ever be the same again.

Now since I can't work I am in danger of losing my home which I had just bought a year earlier. That is why I was doing the overtime. The guy who hit me walked away without a scratch and I am just sitting around writhing in pain. I can't drive anymore because I sometimes pass out without notice, because I am in so much pain. Also I would be putting myself as well as other in danger. I am not that selfish so I just don't drive.

I never understood the logic behind drinking. Are you really that worried or frustrated with life to the point that you need to become something other than yourself? Don't you think about how your drinking might effect your wife, kids, family members and friends? For those of you who drive while you are drinking, if you must drink, can't you take a taxi home? Why destroy an innocent life? I am only 20 years old and I had a good paying job, a nice car and I had purchased my home when I was 19 years old. Now I am going to lose it all because of someone who drinks. Why does drinking alcohol effect everyone except the person drinking it? I guess that is just life.

Thank you for posting this forum. At least I got a chance to vent a little. Take care everyone and think before you drink.

I don't like the feeling I get from drinking neither. A glass of wine every few days with supper to keep arteries clean is all I can handle. So you can imagine, not just any brand will do. I like the fruity tasting kinds basically.

I'm 24 too. :-) I still go out to bars all the time, but I drink Sarsaparilla. It's amazing how smart people think you are when you're the sober person at a bar.

I didn't drink until I was almost 19, and after that only occasionally until I was 34 (then, mostly just beer, and little else), and after that I've been a total abstainer ever since (the past 25 years).

So nearly 3/4ths of my life as an abstainer, and since 1985 that has included even sources of alcohol in food as well (such as found in Cherries Jubilee and food flavorings, such as vanilla, opting to make my own non-alcohol variety from the beans instead).

Haven't missed alcohol a bit either.

When I quit is was completely cold turkey, and I've never looked back.

Whether we drink or don't drink, what's most important is moderation. There's nothing wrong with having a beer every day, so long as you don't feel you NEED to have a beer everyday.

I drink and probably about every day. Guess it is the Irish, English, and German in me. However, I wait until I am nearly done or completely done with all of my work and I don't drink what I refer to as "Rice Water", which is crappy American beer called budweiser and such. I drink because I love to try new beers and I am equal to a wine snob when it comes to beer. Occasionally I will go too far and end up drunk, but only if I have a safe driver or am in the comfort of my own home. I also never go overboard unless I am around good friends that I know will make sure I don't do anything I shouldn't.

I admire those that don't drink, but will never join you simply because I have a love and a passion for beer. Craft beer, imported beer, home brewed beer, anything different and dark really. I love the atmosphere that brew pubs provide and I love the social aspect of it as well. Plus sometimes after a hard day on the golf course a cold brew at the 19th hole just feels like a religious experience to me.

Guess that's enough Ballantines for me...

Sitting above Hong Kong harbor....believe it's called Victoria's peak.

Back when the British still had their 99 year lease...

A toothless Scottish (Dragoon?) and me, drunk as a skunk.

We both spoke in (what we called) English

Didn't understand a word he said, nor he me...hell I slur when sober.

We sat there for three or four hours drinking Scotch and babbling, to this day I have no clue what the hell we said to each other...

Still one of the fun (lack of) memories I have from the military.

I guess it helped that the view out over the harbor up there was spectacular.

I believe it was a British Enlisted or Officers club.

When I was 19, 20, 21 I drank a quart of scotch a day. Once I was "legal" I decided to quit and went to an AA meeting. It was the only AA meeting I ever went to. I figured it would just be easier to quit.

I'll still have a shot every once in a while, but it's a pretty rare occasion. But if you're buying the Blue Label, I'll make an exception.

I had to laugh at that one...because that was my reaction too.
Unfortunately I 'had' to go to a few over the years...the combined effect of which about 'drove me to drink'.

So now I do what they say isn't possible...cut way back and use more sense, it was easier than going there...I'm with Charlie Sheen on that outfit. If they 'cure' someone...fabulous. Wasn't for me

"if you're buying the Blue Label, I'll make an exception"

          I'll bet...I would too.. rofl.

I did some more research on that Blue label...always wondered why they didn't put the age on there....labeling laws... you apparently have to put the least year aged on blended.

Some of the blend is apparently as old as 60 years, some must be (obviously) a lot less.
