Star Wars - what will you do?

I loved Star Wars growing up. Still bust out the original trilogy from time to time.

But I'm not fond of the recently made films. I don't want to see them again...

... yet... the Dark Side of the Force is tempting me upon their re-release in 3D....

What is being re-released, the old trilogy or the newer films?

I must agree with you that the old movies are the best, I was a huge Star Wars fan growing up and actually thought Luke Skywalker was hot!

I don't really like the newer movies and even if they were being released in 3D I wouldn't go and see them.

You thought Luke > Han Solo?! :O

Lucas is releasing all 6 films... starting from Ep I - Ep VI in 3D.

I will see the old ones for sure. But... still undecided about the newer trilogy.

I have an other problem. My GF hasn't seen any of the Star Wars movies yet and I don't know which one should I show her first. The new trilogy 1,2,3 or the old one 4,5,6.

You should show her the original 4,5,6 first then the trilogy 1,2,3. Ahh I want the 3D DVD..

The only problem with watching 4,5,6 first is that the visual effects are pretty outdated and I'm sure that would be a big turn-off for her..

I found the heavy use of cgi in the newer films looked horrid. Even worse than outdated blue-screen effects.

Ok so we watched the first episode yesterday and yes the visual effects are pretty crappy, especially watching it on a 40"+ tv

The reason we don't like the new films is sensory overload.

Remember those old sinbad movies with the sword fighting skeletons. How incredible and exciting it seemed as a child.

People back then would have marveled at the new Star Wars movies. But for us today its just more CGI junk. Kind of sad really.

I actually do like one of the new ones - the one where Darth Vader is made & there is the giant lizard thingy.

In regards to Episodes I, II and III....

These are a perfect example of "just because you can doesn't mean you should".

It's like a painting, you need to know when to stop adding more brush strokes. George Lucas may have had good intentions, and some of the CGI effects ARE cool, but it comes out looking more like a three year old with a set of fingerpaints, than the Mona Lisa.

Now, on to which order to show the movies to someone who has never seen them. I have two lines of reasoning here.

    1. Show them in order by episode number. This way they will see the whole series in order. Plus, they will see the best movies at the end of their viewing.

    2. Show them in the order of their theatrical release. Why? One of the redeeming features of Episodes I, II and III were the "Aha!" moments as they related to Episode IV, V and VI. In other words, I, II and III fill in some of the gaps in IV, V, and VI - BUT...ONLY if you know those gaps are there.

As far as seeing them in 3D? It depends on what type of 3D they use. But it would be cool to see all 6 episodes in 3D, IF they are done right. Unfortunately, I do not have that much confidence in the ham-fisted Lucas to do it right.

    All the best,
    Michael

The original series is definitely the best, the old style effects are just incredible and so ahead of their time. The new CGI effects do bug me as they are not as embedded and I find it a distraction while watching the movie.

However I must admit that I will probably see all the 3D movies because the force (Dark or not) attracts me in all the time. We often bring out the original series or watch them on the set when they play. Definitely an iconic series that I think is the best series ever (the original that is).

I agree completely - emphasis added by me!

But I'm trying to figure out... if its due to it being a great film; or just memories of my childhood

I was raised on the Star Wars films (I'm 29)..... 4,5,& 6 are epic movies!

Many people were disappointed by 1,2,& 3, but I liked them, especially part 3. I like to know the back story of characters and thats what the newest movies were all about. People wanted to know how Anakin became Darth Vader.

To truly appreciate the light, you must live in darkness....

I will see EVERY Star Wars movie in 3D multiple times!

I have to say all the Star Wars films are good, considering what is put forth in todays market, horrible cheesy emo flicks.

I agree that the new films are lacking in something,I think the older films are more popular because of their originality and the new films are trying to be too good with over the top effects and massive budgets

It's so funny when you realise that anakin's voice is soooo wimpish and can't possibly be the same person compared to what he sounds like after getting burned/injured. :p

I loved these films when I was alot younger, and I still catch them when they come on cable. Classics in every sense of the word.

The 3d version is going to be awesome ! I had no idea it was even something in the works !
