  • I don't think the problem is our leaders so much. I think it's math. In the US there's 300+ million people. If a policy is suported by 60% of the population, that means 120 million don't support it.

    IMO, our problem in the US is that the 120 million that don't get their way start crying, declaring war, impeachment, and demonizing instead of understanding that living in a democracy means you'll be a minority sometimes and need to compromise other times.

  • No it's leaders, Kurt. Remember the unprecedented number of citizens who were dead against the bailout? It was passed with no favor. There have been others since - which is why we don't hear about them in the nightly news.

    Incidentally - 300 mil is 1/3 over carrying capacity of the US. Things aren't gonna be honky dory in any system that exceeds its capacity by 1/3. I'm also thinking that 300 mil is low - I had seen somewhere 365 if you include illegals. (not saying there are 65 mil illegals - just that I saw higher stats. I can't hold to that figure until I go back and check the sources of that figure though.

    • Yep, I remember the bail out...Both of them. And they both worked, if anyone looks at the actual numbers. They were LOANS not hand outs, just like student loans and small business loans.

      I think the first part of TARP returned a 8% ROI, according to R Engel of SC. Note the R before the name.

      I'd hate to think of what would have happened if we would have lost the couple of million jobs related to the US auto industry without it.

      BTW, did you notice that Ford and GM are starting to do pretty well and that for the first time in history consumers rate US cars higher in quality now than Japanese cars?

      With your way, there would be NO GM. There would be NO Ford. I don't like that option. You left this part out of the equation. .

      I'm not into "point of the matter", I prefer results. And the US also did very well bailing out Chrysler and Mexico. You call it socialism, I call it smart.

      While the free market system is the best system, it's far from perfect and at times it's best for everyone that we sand down the rough spots.

      One example is the free market system can only be reactive, not proactive. We know the price of oil will go up. It's stupid to wait until after the market makes adjustments to do something about it. I don't care about theory, this is just plain dumb.

      There's a reason our forefathers had enough sense to let representatives make decisions instead of the general public. The public isn't educated enough to make these decisions. And this was built into our system just for the reason you brought up, because the majority didn't know any better.

      For the real truth about what's wrong with the US, listen to Gov. Arnold's speech about the Koch brothers. It's probably the most important speech made by a politician in decades and it's bipartisan.

    • The last official stats I saw were 330mil, though CIA FACT claims 307Mill! But the fact is that those are supposed to count ONLY counted people, and there are so many that AREN'T counted. Based on earlier claims and illegals, 360+ is probably about right.

  • This is very scary. I'm not sure what our future is going to look like. Every industry is being taken over and it's only a matter of time before they are going to start implementing all of these fascist laws the gov has been passing. It's not good. I worry about my children and grandchildren. Or perhaps I won't even have grandchildren.
  • BTW when I was in denmark, GUESS what car seemed to be the most popular? My aunt is DANISH and worked for the DANISH GOVERNMENT! My uncle, though patriotic, would NOT have spent money needlessly following a whim, STILL, GUESS!!!!! COMEON, GUESS!!!!!

    FORD! There are a lot of tauruses and fiestas over there!

    Some here, when pressed after claiming the bailout saved FORD, said that the bailout helped ford because by helping GM it helped keep parts manufacturers in business. Well, ford IS international, and I'm sure they are more diversified than that. AND, if not, it would not be the first time car manufacturers redesigned cars, etc... to ride such things out. HECK, there is a HUGE after market business out there. Just look at tires, though MANY are from a JAPANESE manufacturer. They often have LOTS of other countries making similar tires.
