Blues and soul was one area of music that I just wasn't into much. I guess
that comes from being a pasty face white boy growing up in a Jewish
neighborhood.

Only guys I knew were James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Smokey Robinson, you
know....folks like that. I don't think Solomon Burke was Top 40 radio.

At least not in my neck of the woods.

Thanks Pat. Yeah, a little before my time. I didn't start listening to pop
music until 1964 when the Beatles hit Sullivan and then at that time I
was only into really mainstream stuff like...

The Monkees
The Rolling Stones
The Bee Gees
Dave Clark Five
The Doors
Freddy & The Dreamers
Herman's Hermits

And so on. This was roughly during the 1964 to 1967 era.

The few soul groups I was into during this time were...

The Surpremes
The Temptations
The Four Tops

It wasn't until the 70s that I started really getting into some obscure bands
and then did a little retro search to discover some gems like early Move.

You gotta remember...in 1961 I was 4 years old.

Only music I knew back then was what my mom sang to me before I went
to bed.

The thing is that those 1950's and early 60's bands were the ROOTS of rock and roll and so many of the 60's groups we all loved not only covered the old songs but were highly influenced by the artists.

Get with your roots before they turn platinum like mine!

Problem is, there's too much 50s music to educate yourself with. That
much I know because I used to watch a 50s cover band with one of my
friends many years ago. I couldn't keep up with all the songs they did and
they only covered a fraction of what was around at that time.

No, I think I'll just let the 50s be a part of my life that is confined to the
fact that I was just taking up space for the last 3 years of.

p.s. glad for something else to mourn.

i started out all happy and energized by listening to the Ramones Anthology and now I am crying in my coffee because they are gone.

why does everybody good have to die so fricking young?

I haven't ever heard of him either - when I saw the title of the thread I thought James Brown or someone like that died.

That's not saying it's not a sad day for those who loved his music.

Being a musical genius does seem to shorten the lifespan something furious.
