What's the best way to restore some of my memory (on pc, not in my brain), without removing programs?

I bought loads of memory a few months ago and my programs were running really smoothly, but now it looks like it's back to the old sluggish ways.

Any ideas of the cause? I've removed temp files and did a windows disk cleanup. Anything else I should do?

If you use Internet Explorer, clear the cache that stores all visited webpages and cookies. You'll probably have to tell Amazon and eBay who you are the next time that you visit them, but according to my uncle (who's a Windows user), doing this speeds his computer up noticeably. (Or was it the old messages in Outlook Express that he cleaned up? I dunno. Clean up IE and OE and see if it helps.)

IE would maybe help, OE wouldn't make a difference.
I still say run a virus scan first. or you can run this and do a disk cleanup and then a disk defrag.

I was thinking something like that also.
I use WinPatrol to monitor my start up programs.
Also I turned off the restore feature which I think is useless if you use the proper anti virus, firewall, and browser software.

click on the start icon in the bottom left corner and scroll up to run...
click on run you will get a prompt
      type in msconfig, click OK
from the there you will have some tabs click on the statup tab

you will beable to disable all the unnecessary programs that start up when you start your computer. becareful not to disable everything some programs are necessary for proper windows start up.

A good rule of thumb is not to disable anything that you don't know what it does.

      Hope this helps!

P.S. the more programs that are running the slower your computer will run. Also try upgrading your RAM this will help drastically

    1) go into your "internet cache" folder and delete all files.
    2) do a scan disk and defrag (depending on which windows you have)
    2) go to "temporary internet files" and delete all files.

that should free up quite a bit of space.

run disk cleanup, delete prefetch folder. delete internet cache or reset your web browser. delete temporary internet files and folders. run defrag. remove unnecessary programs running during startup by disabling them or preventing them to run> START> RUN> MSCONFIG > startup tab.

When I ran the free version of AVG I found loads of stuff that McAfee had missed.

Took a few runs but got all of it quarantined and deleted.

Also, check out System Mechanic. I've not seen it mentioned here but gets rave reviews from many computer people. You can download it and use full version for 30 days free and it has 40 different software tools that claim to fix almost any problem.

        How to improve virtual memory
I've tried ErrorExpert and it works grate!!
The first time I used it after installation it found about 200 problems which it corrected my computer is much much faster now.
I now run it about once a week.

I have bought many programs which don't do much if they work at all.

But this one works and it's simple to use.
I highly recommend this program for anybody that has a computer.

I've got a little app that runs at start up on my XP box that dynamically reclaims memory. Maybe somebody recognizes it and knows the name.

I'll try to look and post the name later if nobody recognizes the little tool I'm talking about.

"Windoze" is a lonely machine on my otherwise all Mac network. ; )

    start>run>cmd>msconfig>startup

these are all the programs that start when you turn your machine on. Turn off what you dont 'need', such as antivirus or wireless tools. This does not remove programs it just makes it so they don't start when you start windows.

Why not try zipping your file.. It's one way to reduce the memory consumption of files.. You can make use of Winzip or Winrar for zipping..

I think you should try XP tools or CCleaner. Both are very good tools for windows optimization. I prefer XP tools. You can run its registry checking tool, disk defragmentation tool, and other tools according to your requirements. Good Luck

Clear caches, temporary files, defrag, and delete programs or files you don't absolutely need. But its tough, everyones computer seems to get sluggish at some point. Video files can really slow things down.
