Hi Kim - You posted about being a computer repair person. I need advice - and if this post runs all together it's becuase some of the forum formatting is not working (again) for me. I'm trying to add more memory - I have the card seated properly but I cannot get the little black clips to hook at the end. Is there a trick to this? I know there's a little slot thingie and that appear to be matched up fine. Any advice on something I could try to get this damned memory upgrade done? Thanks kay

    Kay,
Is this a laptop or a desktop?
Actually, either way, you should take the memory out and reseat it,it may seem correctly placed, but trust me, when it is, the clips will go on properly.

I'm going out,I'll check back here in a couple of hours when I get back.

It's a desktop - a Dell. I've reseated it several times and I'm wondering if I bought the wrong one - I got the one recommended by a local fix-it guy who knows what he's doing and the slots, etc look right. It shouldn't be this hard. Dumb question - but is there any difference between white clips for these cards and the black clips? Every online source I've found trying to get this done talks about "white" clips - but what does the color matter?

They could be white, black, or metalic. I don't think the color means anything. But you really shouldn't listen to anyone regarding about what type of memory you need. It should be in the manual, or you can compare the fingers, shape, numbers on the boards. There are just too many types of memory, and many say you should have all the same even if the computer could use a different rating.

When I have had trouble, it has ALWAYS been due to not having it in all the way, or at the wrong angle. ALSO, some are deceptive. There are some where you push it in almost straight, and then push onto the clips, from what would seem the side, if you were looking at one clip behind the other, and the memory board facing to the side, which then open and lock on the memory with a snap.

    Hey Kay,

It's unlikely the wrong ram would fit at all. Some of them are a little tricky to get in and take more force than you'd expect. Or, as Steve said, you may need to put it in, then snap it at a slight angle into place.

If you have another stick that you didn't take out, you may want to unseat it to see exactly what you need to do.

I thought about removing one of the other ones - but afraid I couldn't get that back in either. I've added stuff before with no problem and expected this to be very simple. Things that make you go "arrrgh". I'll try again in a while. Thought maybe there was a trick to the little clip thingies that I was missing. And I broke the WF again and can't format anything here. kay

They try to make them CHEAP, LOW PROFILE, SECURE, and SAFE. You have to give up SOMETHING! 8-)

Actually, there ARE a lot of types of ram that are IDENTICAL in ever respect but electronic. For the longest time almost all computers used one of two types of chips. Even the apples up to, and possibly including, the early mac, and the IBM PC/XT/AT, used them. BOTH looked the same, but one had 4 times the memory. Each of those had perhaps a dozen that were identical in perhaps ALL respects, but some ran faster. So you can never be too sure.

The idea about checking how existing memory fits is a good one, just be careful, and stay grounded.

I just got home, did you get the memory in? If you want you can PM me the service tag and I can look up what kind you need.
As far as the color of the clips, For the most part they are matched, meaning if you are putting in DIMM memory chips you would put one in each of the whites or each of the backs, etc, etc. (DIMM stands for dual inline memory module.)

Decided I would try it in the morning - I'm sure it's me - think perhaps I was supposed to open the clips and didn't.

It means pulling the desk out and I was too lazy to do it again today:p

      I got it!

I missed the "open clips" part. Also took more pounds pressure than I expected to click the thingie into place.

Thanks, guys! I have a talent for making easy things hard - on the other hand I sometimes accomplish the hard things easily.
