Spyware Warning

This is a new one that just came across my desk. If this has already been posted, apologies as I didn't have time to check this.

The scammers have a new hook, calling you by telephone. They talk real excitedly, claim your computer has been sending out spam and viruses, and if you don't take immediate action, your computer is in immeninent danger of crashing, and taking down wifi in your local area.

They will send you to a website (I won't list it here, because I don't want to give these *******s any seo juice) and claim it's a 'Microsoft Certified' website. There is a link called 'live support' they will want you to click on.

If you click the link, your computer will pop up with a message telling you what you are going to download. The file is called:

AMMYY_Admin.exe

This is not a live chat file, nor is it a Microsoft remote support link. A quick search on the web found this little info beauty:

http://www.spydig.com/file-diagnosis...Admin-exe.html

Yep, it's goddamned malicious software designed allow hackers access to your computer to do whatever the **** they desire.

I'm going to be downloading this (but not running it mind you), and hustling it off to Symantec so they can tell me exactly what this will do if you do run it as the page I'm looking at is vague. I will update as I get info from Symantec Security Response.

Please do not fall for this.

  • I received a phone call this evening, while working. I could hardly understand the accent!

He got quite upset when I wouldn't follow his instructions - I politely hung the phone up on him.

As I am on the "Do Not Call" list here, I can only guess that he was calling from outside of Canada.

  • Floyd - "access to do anything" -- is this a root kit by any chance and if so, will sophos run against it?
  • Thanks Floyd for information. Will internet security suit not warn about and catch the spyware?
  • I also received some calls its really annoying

    thanks for the info
