Why Bother With an iPad or Tablet With This Available?

I've been pondering tablets and their usefulness for awhile now and of course, where I live, it wouldn't be very useful at all, but I've been reading about this little Acer Netbook/Computer and finally found one at Walmart yesterday ... $250 with tax.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that is pretty large (17.5 in screen) and somewhat heavy ... nothing at all like a tablet sized device.

I grabbed the Acer. This thing has everything and does anything that a tablet can do, only much more for much less dollars. 160 GB hard drive and tons of features. I've backed up my desktop pc to the Aspire, and this is a small, lightweight, thin full featured computer for dirt cheap.

    Just been watching the gadgets program here in the UK (5 mins ago), and they were doing best buy tests on notebooks etc. The Acer came out best overall. Seriously considering getting one

        Well, I decided to get the ASUS EEE 1000HA(or is it HE, I always get them mixed up. 8-() ITs battery lasts about 10 hours, and it is about 5% faster. And it WAS about $250USD. It IS nice, don't get me wrong, but sales in the US would probably drop 30-50% if they charged $500USD+, because it isn't as expandable has fewer USB ports, no hard storage(like CD). Notebooks in the $500+USD range typically DO have those, and are faster. Of course, the size, weight, and long battery life, are still pretty good.

        It IS nice, and HAS held up well. It is also very compatible. Asus just came out with one that is supposed to last 50% longer and, in theory at least, should be about twice as fast(The CPU Ghz is about 9% slower, but newer technology, has a few new performance features, and 2 cores, instead of one.).

        Still, the idea of something half the size, with no fixed keyboard, is intriguing, to say the least.

          I agree there is a massive difference in price but the iPad hands down I feel kills it..you just can't beat it!

          I think of the mobile phone market with iphones

          mp3 players and ipod

          it seems everyone else is playing 'catch up' and trying to emulate apples but when they do come out with something, apples already got a newer , and better innovation...

          or maybe am just a crazy apple fan lol

            All I get so far as features goes

            it's always on ... except when you live outside of wi-fi range
            great for reading email and pdfs and browsing the web

            Seems like that's a lot of money for reading emails, pdfs and web browsing. I'm betting that competitors will be building a lot more functionality into their tablets to compete with the iPad and then it will get very interesting.

              true but when it comes to marketplace apps and innovations..thus far am seeing the best in ipods,/iphones,ipads - thats what i mean features etc

              for example with the nokia OV store...now perhaps am wrong as i havent checked in a while but the apps, (including paid) are really poor vs what the developers are bringing out with the itunes marketing place...for 99cents or 59p for us uk folk...really awesome stuff

              but i guess there are valid arguements for and against and am just being biased to compensate for my silly spending and 'try' and make a valid excuses for buying the next apple product lol...

              cus its damn expensive - gotta agree with you there!

    Yeah ... it was a no brainer for me. Clerk asked me if I wanted to buy the protection plan and I said no ... at that price if it breaks I'll come back and get a couple more. This thing is so light and slim you can take it anywhere, unlike my Toshiba which is quite heavy and large.

    Trying it all out yesterday and no problems. Tethered to Droid for instant Internet. It's also WiFi certified and I'll be taking it somewhere today where I can check that out.

    Yes, Suzanne. My wife bought one (I think she got the Asus) about 9 months ago, she wanted something to take with her on a ski trip.

    Now she uses that netbook to death.

    Just think, if the manufacturer made it with an 11 inch diagonal screen instead of a 10 incher, they could put a full size keyboard on it! I think Fujitsu makes one with an 11 inch and full keyboard - of course Fujitsu charges a whole lot more because they have the only one on the market.

    You got a good buy on that. I think Mary Ann (my better half) paid $300 or $350 for hers.

    You'll have a lot of fun with that.

      I'm wanting one for travelling, I have a small laptop but the netbooks are even smaller, fit into my handbag quite nicely

      Yeah ... I've been agonizing over the whole tablet thing and feeling quite envious that people have such a lightweight, portable device, but this fits the bill nicely.

      That's one thing I love about this Acer laptop/netbook ... it has a large keyboard with large keys. Much larger than my Toshiba, which makes it very easy to type on.

    lol, We are starting to shop for a netbook, too. I look at the tablets and the Gizmo Geek in me really wants one, the working side of me knows the netbook is much more practical and will be a better ROI. (Working side of me is called "wife".) I just hate when the working side of me is right so often.

      Yes ... I am so yesterday After all, I've gone all these years without a cell phone until recently and I only bought that to get off of dial-up.

      But ... I want the small size and light weight and I want to be able to install programs and backup websites on it.

      I also want to be able to use it at home for more than a coffee cup coaster. I get no WiFi here so there would be an additional cost for a "Verizon Only" (because Verizon is the only provider that I can get any service from here in cowtown) product to get connected to the Internet.

      I know my location requirements aren't typical, but I don't want something that I can't install programs and files on. I mean ... what can an iPad do that this can't ... it's just as portable plus has the ability to carry around the important parts of my entire desktop PC .... and $250 ... geeesh. It couldn't be any cheaper.

          Here's why I bother with an iPad...

          But before I subject myself to unnecessary criticism, let me admit that the iPad has some serious limitations - mostly in the productivity area. It will NOT fit everyone's need, and a netbook will certainly excel in areas the iPad (or other tablets) lacks.

          However, here is what I love about the iPad...

          The user experience (instant on/off, touch screen) is really hard to beat.

          Marathon-like battery life.

          Reading books and pdf's, web browsing, checking email is more enjoyable to me than on a notebook/netbook.

          Even though netbook sizes are certainly more manageable than notebooks, the iPad is even more so.

          While typing is not as fluid as using a regular keyboard, it CAN be done and is much easier than you would think. I spent a couple days at a conference and typed notes the whole time from the iPad and was not frustrated at all in the experience.

          Supermodels now want to be my friend (ok, I made this last part up).

          Right now, I would not trade or sell my iPad for a netbook that had gigs more hard drive space and a full operating system. I simply don't need it for what I do with my iPad.

          So, recognizing that not every device will fit every person, I am glad you found something that fits you. I found something that fits me.

    I have a slightly old Acer laptop now and was thinking of getting an apple notebook or other apple so I have both a mac and a pc. Is this new acer generally better than macs equivalent in your opinion?

    I've been so close to get a mac recently but then I saw this thread and I'm not so sure. I tend to think Apples leading the way but at this sort of price I'm not sure there's a lot of competition. I'd love a tablet too but I'd like to see where it's all going.

    Is it doing everything you need it to do?

        On the walmart site they are $298 - but the purple version is $268.

        Most of the time online prices are lower than stores - but not always the case with walmart. I bought a new TV this month and the sony I wanted was $20 cheaper in the store than on the site. No special - just different price.

            Suzanne, for your needs and purposes I think a netbook is far better than ANY kind of tablet (this isn't meant to specifically bash the iPad, this is directed at all tablets). For people who are more interested in content creation rather than content consumption, a device with a real keyboard is going to beat a 'virtual' keyboard hands down, period.

            With that said, I think that the new Macbook Air would suit your needs far better than any tablet would. The only issue is cost and the law of diminishing returns at work here - your little Acer netbook can do at least 80% of what the Macbook Air does for less than 30% of its price. From a purely value-driven perspective, the choice is obvious. There's no denying that the Macbook Air is a very desirable mini notebook though.

              The MacBook Air looks very cool. Price is a stopper for me mainly because I have 2 laptops now .... a 17.5 in and this new netbook. Another thing that would bother me is that all of the programs I've purchased and use on a regular basis are for the PC and what I do is sort of clone my desktop PC to a laptop so I always have a backup of my desktop plus I can work anywhere I go. That might be difficult to install my programs on a Mac and get them to work.

                There's always the option of running Apple Bootcamp and installing Windows 7 in a separate partition, or you could use virtual machine software like VMware Fusion or Parallels to run Windows simultaneously with Apple OS X.

        Bullets fired :p.

        My daughter, who travels constantly, got one (AcerNB) and loves it. Easy to pack, fits in purse... can't be beat if you're on the road. Unbelievable memory in the space, although my HTC prob has more memory than most computers I've owned except my MacBook (emphasis added; easy to dodge bullets fired).

          I picked up an ASUS 1005E netbook a while back, which claimed a 14-hour battery life. I actually get 11 hours of normal use on a single charge, without having done anything to conserve the battery. I'd have been happy with 7 hours.

          160 gig HD, with Win7 and Linux dual-boot. (Added Linux after getting it.) The keyboard is comfortable at 94% normal, and the screen is clear and sharp. The only thing I really don't like about it is the gloss finish of the case. (I'd love to see one of these with a 250 gig solid state drive...)

          With a 2 gig ram upgrade and an external DVD/CD drive, it was around $500. I use that thing more than the laptops, by a large margin. It's just so bloody convenient.

            To much derision from me and our three laptop-welded children, my technophobe wife declared that she wanted an Acer netbook for Christmas last year. It came as quite a surprise because we didn't know she knew what a computer is!

            The laugh is on us now. The little machine is great and between Delia and the kids it is usually in use by someone for about 8 hours a day. I'm even tempted to get one for myself now.

            Now how about this for a wish list: a netbook with a detachable screen that doubles as a standalone ebook reader. I;ve seen the future and I want it now!

            You'd get even better battery life with a solid state drive (SSD). There has been a significant drop in their prices over the last few months, and what you could do is swap out your existing HD for a SSD. These days, you can pick up a 128 Gb SSD for around the $200 mark (they used to cost almost double that just a few short months ago), and here's a good example of what can be had at this price point - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820322035

                You're welcome. A SSD is far more reliable than a HD as it has no moving parts. It's also far less sensitive to extreme temperature, humidity and vibration/shock, so it'd be ideal for a netbook that you are probably going to carry around a lot.

                In addition to that, it never requires defragmentation, and most applications start up almost immediately. You'll end up with a very snappy and responsive notebook that also wakes up from Hibernation and Stand By almost instantly.

    After lugging a 17" laptop through a couple of airports recently, I'm seriously considering picking up something lighter. But like you, I just don't see the usefulness of a tablet. What am I going to do without a keyboard? A netbook just seems so much more practical.

    I just got myself a Toshiba last month. It's pretty good but just don't like the battery life. It was advertised to have 8 hours battery life but if you use if frequently, it can only last for about 2.5 hrs.

    But, it's good coz it's light. Despite deprive of the dvd player, it's ok to do most of the IM work when I am not at home.

    I love my Acer Netbook. It is great for travel and taking to seminars. Lightweight, reliable and has a webcam so I can use Skype when I'm away from home.

    Also it is great if you have to take a kid to gymnastics or some other event.

    We have both, after getting the iPad, the net book is rarely used. You need to have one to understand. First off, the iPad has 10 hours of battery life. I use it completely untethered for days on end until I need to charge again. Second, its instant on functionality is amazing. No waiting to boot, shutdown, hibernate. Finally, I can take this anywhere. I use it in the car, couch, waiting rooms, oil changes, etc. It looks like a writing pad to others. Setting up a netbook, though small, will never be as functional. This is from my personal real world experience.

    I myself got a toshiba netbook a couple weeks ago. I do everything I need to do to make money online with it from writing to graphic editing to movie editing. It's tiny, but powerful and it plays flash!

    I love my iPad. Mainly because it is instantly on. When I ran my WSO, I could quickly peak at the posts, bump it, check Paypal, send support emails, while I'm sitting in a meeting pretending to concentrate on work. I am seriously considering the new 11" Macbook Air.

    All of these are waaaaayyyy better than carrying those 17" ones around

    I don't own an iPad (yet) but I've used one several times and will most likely buy one for myself.

    I love that not only does the unit itself turn on instantly (which is great) but jumping into email or Safari is instant as well. No waiting to boot, and no waiting for programs to launch. Nice.

    I looked at Netbooks yesterday and at one store I can get 50 quid off if I trade in an old lappie, so gonna lug my husbands ancient Vao in tomorrow.

    As to Ipads, well I desperately want one just because they are so cool.

    I've dropped so many hints for Christmas, they are now littering the carpet...

    I travel the world with my netbook its the best £350 I ever spent I can run my whole business easily.

    I am also looking at an ipad for my general holidays as they seem pretty sleek and do everything I would need when I am just simply away.

    yeah my samsung NC10 has an 8 hour battery life and its does the job.

    The keyboard is a nice size and the screen is good I get a bit squinty after a day using it but i dont care as when I am using it the un shines and the pool is always near so nothing to complain about.

        Just messing with ya Paulie.. :-)

        Truth is sometimes using it I feel like I'm in a box. I have to do one thing but can't get to it because I can't close out what I'm on. I think they realized that just wasn't going to fly so came up with a fix. Hopefully it will help relieve some of that restricted feeling.

        With that said though, for me, nothing beats it for browsing and email or just checking up on things in general.

        You weren't calling me a fanboy were you?

        This is true with most things. Some solutions will work for others that won't work for you and vice-versa.

        It's great to have choices.

      It's all very well having an iPad that can multitask, but as my wife is always keen to point out (while she is doing at leat six other things), that is one trick I haven't learnt yet.

            There's really nothing to learn with multitasking, once you get comfortable with a computer and the applications that it runs, you'll naturally want to do it as you'll see how much more productive and efficient it'd be.

    They run cooler and quieter, too. Granted, heat's mostly CPU-generated, but anything that cuts the temp is a Good Thing.

    Hmmm... An external SSD would be nice for portable apps. And the durability solves my biggest concern with that idea. Now THAT could be cool.

      I believe that the $200 SSD I mentioned above comes with an upgrade kit that includes an external enclosure for your old hard drive, which could alternatively be used for the SSD if you wanted to utilize it as an external drive.

    I have a little notebook and yet there's just something about the iPad that rocks. I use it constantly. Not just for surfing the web and tweeting all day--I've written books on it now. Documents To Go + Dropbox = awesomeness. Maybe there are other ways to go here, but I love the thing.

    I like tablets because while web apps are useful and what not they just run better as standalone applications on tablet, and there is a management perk to using a tablet over bookmarks as well. There's minimal system resource allotment for the OS, so the application can really use all the tablet has to perform beautifully. On the management side of things, browsers do a really awful job with bookmarks. Even with folders it always winds up becoming an ugly mess. The way apps are displayed on tablets is just better.

    I have both, and use them both for different things. If I plan on just browsing, I go with the iPad all day long. Just a lot easier to navigate. But if I plan on doing any typing, like now in the forum, I'd go w/ the netbook.

    However I do not use either one if I'm going for productivity. I much prefer my desktop PC w/ Windows 7 and 24 inch dual monitors. Trying to be productive w/ a netbook after that is like trying to move your office into a broom closet.

    I'm posting from an Acer right now.

    Used it in college, it was perfect, heck, with the mic I would record the lessons of a really fast talking teacher I used to have to pay attention to.

    I wondered the same thing when the Ipad came out, I love my little laptop, it works well.

    Oh if you ever hit the loud fan issue (trust me you'll notice it when it happens, the older models had it, don't know about newer ones) just search it on google, someone uploaded a fix for it.

    I use this thing for all of my IM stuff and it works like a charm, doesn't look as cool as an Ipad, but it still looks pretty dang good seeing as how it's over a year old now.

    Regarding the ipad, have you seen the latest NOOK!?!?!? It is COLOR, FULL touch, etc... It is starting to be something that could give the ipad a run. But apple can't REALLY take credit for the tablet, unless MAYBE you go back to NEWTON! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton_(platform) Did that EVER really catch on?

      Yeah ... I just saw the new Nook yesterday and my guess it's going to inspire a "new Kindle" as well, and both will be more like a tablet than just a simple ebook reader. Not to mention competition from Android, HP, Samsung, and on and on.

      The Kindle has sold millions and at it's current pricing, will sell millions more, so it's more that the Nook is trying to compete with Amazon rather than the other way around.

      Here's the thing. Amazon has said that the Kindle will continue to be a "purposed based reading device", which is exactly why I love it.

      It's the perfect size and weight for reading and reading is the only thing that I want it for .... and that is, reading books that I buy from my preferred book provider ... which of course, is Amazon.

      I tried Barnes and Noble online when they first opened and didn't like them. Went back to Amazon. Having 3 computers and a Droid X that does everything plus more than any tablet does, I don't want a reader that distracts me from ... reading a good book.

      MIne has Windows 7 "Starter" version. I'd go with that. I love the new netbook and am having no problems.

    Well I bought a netbook today!
    It was a choice between the Acer and a Samsung which was on sale.
    I went with the Samsung - nice matte case and also a matte screen which is great, 8 hour battery too.
    I'm very happy with it so far.
