Change pages to posts in wordpress, good or bad idea?

I have just taken over a Wordpress site and all of the unique content is done in pages. If I were to change it to posts, because I have read that Google prefers posts to pages, will I harm the site. It is a 3yr old PR1 site.

Any advice would be appreciated

If you do this you will need to be sure all the links pointing to those pages remain the same so the search engines don't serve up 404 errors and scrub your rankings and kill your PR.

I can't give you much more advice than that as I've never done that, but the last thing you want to have happen is your site starts over from ground zero and your backlinks are gone. And when I say links pointing to the pages I'm also talking about all the internal links.

you can also use wp plug in to avoid 404. there is no bad idea there if you can maintain the availability of your site.

I can't imagine that you could harm a PR1 site by doing this. PR1 is the lowest rank correct? If anything it should help boost it with the posts. But Bill's advice is good about the links both internal and external...just move slowly and methodically and it should be fine.

Thanks folks, I will take note of the 404 situation. I know there is a plugin that you can use if you change your permalink so maybe I can use that to take care of the 404 situation.

If anyone has anything else to add, please feel free

    UPDATE:
I have found a plugin called p2pconverter which is meant to convert either posts to pages or vice versa, so I am going to give that a go.
