Hot Coffee, an accident, and I make $100.

Hi all,

My day started out GREAT today. I hope yours did too.

Here is a way to make a few bucks by accident. I say by accident because I've tried to do this on purpose when I really needed money and not once did it work.

Here's the deal. Over the past few years I have gone into different restaurants, enjoyed breakfast while working on an ebook or membership site or some other project. Heck, sometimes I'm just posting here or reading my email and otherwise goofing off.

Well a few times I've been doing this people have said to me, "What are you doing?" Or, "Nice Computer." Or, "How do you....?" I show them or make an appointment to come over to their business. Sometimes I make a few bucks and sometimes I don't.

This morning I'm downtown LA eating a chorizo and egg burrito and drinking coffee while Working on a couple of things on my NetBook.

I finished and started getting ready to leave but thought, "I need one more cup." So I went over and got one last refill.

While drinking that and still working on my netbook a man in a business suit came over to my table and said, "You look like you know that computer stuff."

I said, "Enough to get by."

He asked, "How much would you charge me to show me a few things?"

I said well, it depends on If I can and how long it would take but I'll hang around here for another hour and see if I can help you and if I do, how about $20.

He sat down and to make a long story short (too late.) I helped him set up 2 gmail accounts. Told him about Google Voice and showed him how my Google Voice worked with my cell phone.

I watched and helped him while he typed his "first" email and sent it to his other gmail account and to someone else.

I showed him how to "Google."

He reached out with my "$20" I took it and said thank you and he left.

Looking at my "$20" I saw instead a $100 bill.

Point?

Get out of the house and work in public. Accidents do happen you know, and they are not always bad.

    That's a cool story George!

Gosh, there are still people that don't know how to send email or google? I guess sometimes I forget that some people haven't been exposed to the computer as much as I have.

I've never seen that kind of thing happen in Seattle -- everyone else is already on a laptop.

      LOL,

Qdoba, Corner of Hope *nice name" and 7th. If you are ever there Thursday between 8 and 11 and see a fat old man that looks like my avatar, I'll buy the coffee.

So do you live in downtown LA or is the breakfast just good enough at this place to drive to it?

The breakfast is good, however I go to LA and other places to get out and about and get ideas for marketing.

I've learned a lot from the mega successful to the homeless.

The first couple of years I was online I pretty much stayed in and tried to get all my inspiration from the Internet and I found I was just recycling stuff.

The NEW Ideas come to me while I'm at 100 different locations talking to people, well, mostly listening and watching people.

With the advent of Net Books and now my Droid and in the future an iPad there is nothing I can't do on a train or restaurant or hotel that I do at home RE: Marketing and product creation etc.

Plus getting out and visiting businesses is a money making proposition in itself. That $100 "tip" was one in several over the past years. It was unique because of the fact I wasn't trying to make money I was just trying to eat my burrito and "accidentally" made $100. I've "set up shop" in restaurants before. Not any significant "bites" til now.

Nice work. One thing thats been working well for me at restaurants is asking them if they ahve an email list. If they say no then I tell them they are losing at least 10K a month worth in easy sales.

I then proceed to tell them how effective an email list is for restaurants and even show them a few stats from other restaurants I do this for.

I then charge them $500 to setup the optin box on their site and open a new campaign in my Getresponse account.

I then charge $200 a month for the list.

One restaurant only has a list of 600 and if we do a promotion we normally sell around 3K from that email. Do that once a week and thats 12K a month in sales they wouldnt have had without the list.

      Cheers

It's great that you're drumming up recurring fees from the restaurants. When you charge them $500 for the set up, what does that include? Do you offer to write the emails for them, and how many emails do you send out for them per week?

That's really cool Jan, how you do it. It's easier to find a restaurant in New York than a hole in the pavement so I was thinking about doing something similar. Would you like to share a few info? Why don't you make a WSO out of that?

    Greetings George,

The way I see it ... both parties had a profitable transaction.

I believe that they really like you, that you did a good job and he could afford the fee, plus most generous tip.

He had probably been wondering about how to set up an e-mail account for a long time, and was too shy to ask folks that knew him ... because he would have to admit that he could not.

So, he was a winner as well ... and you will probably be hearing from them again, whenever he needs help.

The moral of the story is ... if somebody needs help, try to assist him or her.

If you do a good job and I like you ... a much larger reward can be received.

    All the best ... Ron

Great, Jan! I am also doing offline consulting work at the moment, but have never done anything with restaurants before. I assume you're targeting small "mom and pop" type restaurants where the owner is actually around most of the time?

Thats correct. It's very profitable but too much like a job for me. I like doing IM much better. Less work for a lazy guy like me.

THat was kind of you to help like that. I know I sometimes get fustrated with teaching things I assume are "simple" but not neccessarily true for others.

So I'm just wondering, did you take that $100 and reinvest it into your biz or did you treat yourself after a job well done? j/k Great job and congrats!

Great story. I'd hang out in shops more, but my bored 2 year old racing through the place terrorizing everything in her path tends to make it hard for people to concentrate on throwing money at me.

Hmm, there must be a market for teaching older guys how to use the internet and emails. Back when I was still employed, I worked in a trade association where they hired a big fancy exec to take over while they looked for a permanent CEO. He had never had a job without a secretary before. He called me in to find out why his email was not working. He had just finished his very first email. He was very frustrated that after typing in the names of all the people he wanted to CC, the darn thing would not send it to them.
