While I wasn't watching, look what was going on.

I just read this story about the FTC and the push for net neutrality. How Google and Verizon are against it. I know I had heard of it before but didn't pay a whole lot of attention, for some unknown reason. But if G and V get their way, we will have to pay for a spot on the first page of the search engines. How well will that work? Unless you have deep pockets, then you will not stand much of a chance of your site getting that desired spot.

If you want to read the same story I read, check it out here:
FCC Pushed for Net Neutrality Rules | Gazette Journal

If Google isn't making enough money already, man, this would be a disaster for many people I would think. No more chance to make it big on the internet unless you have plenty of money to start with. Not a good think I think.

You'd think people would have smelled the coffee and quit dealing with Verison because of outsourcing and illegal surveillance (it was illegal when they did it anyway - they had clout to make sure it was legalized AFTER the fact).

But people kept paying them, using them, and working for them.......see what that accomplished? Know what - people won't even drop them off if they do start taking fees for google placement.

So what are you supposed to do for people that won't help their own butts?

If net neutrality looks like it's going to actually pass legislation, the only way to fight it is to stop using google immediately - for anything, and drop Verison off on the curb where you picked the tramps up from in the first place.

If the only results on Google's SERPS are paid for (ie advertising), it won't work at all. Think about how you use Google. Which links do you click on? The ones that are there because the SE has determined they are the most relevant to your search query, or the ones that have paid to be there?

PIf it is all paid for results, people will stop using "G" as a search engine, so therefore the companies paying to be there will lose money hand over fist and stop paying Google for it.

Both Google and said companies will be the losers. Yahoo/Bing will be the winners, unless they take the same path.

    Then another SE will arise.

Right about people clicking on paid adverts. It's well known that far
fewer people click on the ppc ads. Whether that is due to knowledge
that they're paid for ads or not is really not known, as far as I know.

But that just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense with Google pushing
or wanting the first page of serps to be paid for ads. It seems to be
totally counter to their entire algorithm of returning the most relevant
results. I just have a hard time understanding why they would want
    to do that.

Sure, they'll make more money at least in the beginning. But I think it
will anger far more people than they realize. So then what would be the
point of having your site listed in Google? For 99% of people, there would
    be no reason.

Imagine if people starting blocking google's bot from crawling their sites.

If that happened, then that would be a once in a lifetime chance for yahoo
and bing to step up to the plate and invite the rest of the world over to
    their search engines.

Then there is facebook. That really would open the door for FB to steal
a lot of market share for search.

So nothing about that scenario makes any sense in the long term. But,
google is semi-touched, anyway, and you never know. I wouldn't mind
if the scales tipped in someone elses favor for search. A lot of people
are tired of google and their half-wit ideas. At least half-wit in my
    opinion.

That is proof that Google are the Borg. You will be assimilated. And like it.

It makes you wonder how much background information on people Google has really collected over the years. Could there be some FTC people who are afraid of what Google may release?
