Had a health scare today.

I am diabetic so I am used to having the odd day when I do not feel on top of the world. Usually I can get out of it by doing some exercise, but today was different.

Started to feel faint and had a headache all morning. Then my arm started to ache and my fingers got that pins and needles feeling. I lost all strength in my body.

Normally a trip to the Doctor would be the answer, but I have not registered here in France yet. Guess what has just moved up the to do list pretty rapidly.

Feeling a little better now, but boy did that scare me.

I'm not a doctor, nor is this medical advice. The symptoms you describe sound like a stroke.

Seek help immediately. You may have suffered a mild stroke, but none the less, you need medical help. Don't wait.

I have to say it has shaken me up a bit. Apart from being diabetic, I am quite fit. I weigh just over 14 stone and am six foot tall. I have never smoked and am an ex athlete. I still go out and jog a few miles along the mountain tracks a couple of times a week. I supose my age (53) and being diabetic, anything can happen.

Everything shuts here tomorrow, but I am going to register with a doctor on friday morning.

    Thanks everyone for your advice.

Have a light day and eat well today... And feel better soon!

Healthcare is very good here, but I have not registered since I moved from the UK 6 months ago. I stockpiled my diabetic drugs before I moved over and just never got round to visiting a Doctor to register.
I will be doing so first thing friday morning thats for sure.

waterotter is RIGHT! You COULD have had a stroke or a "ministroke", aka TIA!

That said, these are ALSO possible symptoms related to diabetes! DON'T assume that though! But diabetes causes low blood sugar which can cause lethargy, headache, and loss of strength. It ALSO causes HIGH blood sugar which can cause nueropathy which can manifest as pins and needles.

A STROKE, or TIA, restricts blood flow which can cause fainting, headache, tingling, and loss of strength.

BTW with stroke/tia, it tends to happen all together in seconds or minutes. It can last seconds or forever.(Tias are defined as lasting 24 hours or less)

With diabetes, it is likely to come on slower and more gradually, and the symptoms will not appear with close propinquity.

BTW TIAs can QUICKLY progress to FULL strokes!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transient_ischemic_attack

The most frequent symptoms include temporary loss of vision (typically amaurosis fugax); difficulty speaking (aphasia); weakness on one side of the body (hemiparesis); and numbness or tingling (paresthesia), usually on one side of the body. Impairment of consciousness is very uncommon. There have been cases where there has been a temporary paralysis of a part of the face and the tongue. The symptoms of a TIA are short lived and usually lasts a few seconds to a few minutes and most symptoms disappear within 60 minutes. Some individuals may have a lingering feeling that something odd happened to the body. Dizziness, lack of coordination or poor balance are also symptoms related to TIA. The symptoms may vary in severity.

Once while I was doing dialysis my BP dropped and my vision blurred and my right arm went numb and I lost feeling in my fingers.
It was a rare day in that my dialysis nurse happened to be there and she had my wife dial 911.
The rescue squad took me to the hospital where after being examined they diagnosed me as having a TIA.
Myself I just figured it was trying to take off too much during the dialysis session, but the official word is still that I had a TIA.
They ARE serious business, best to take advice and at least have it checked out.

Not going to tell you how to handle it -- but will say how I would.

I would go into emergency at a hospital, explain my symptoms and the fact that I was new there and had not yet been able to register. I'm sure they would have some solution. From what I know of France, they aren't going to just let you die on a corner somewhere (or the lobby) over red tape. You can't be the first traveler to have a medical issue while inside their borders.

Definitely see a doctor. If you are type1 diabetic (insulin-dependent), it's highly unlikely it's a stroke, most likely fluctuations in your blood sugar. If you recently moved there, it can be related to your diet. So talk to a doctor and make sure you are adjusting well. Health is the most important thing you can have, do not take it lightly.

BTW if it WAS a tia, there is a HIGH likelihood they can give you a few tests that coud take minutes to a few hours, depending, AND, if you DID have a tia give you a drug to take for a short period, or the rest of your life, to make TIAs rare! AGAIN, treatment depend on the cause. IF, it was a TIA, and you DON'T go, you could get a full stroke and possibly be a paralyzed vegetable.

    Some causes and treatments?

    1. Foreign tissue or an infection in the circulatory system? An antibiotic until the infection is gone, or for life.
    2. Platelets sticking together. well, plavix is one possible thing, again, I think for life.
    3. Foreign mechanical device, or something that damages blood, non smooth walls, etc... Coumarins, for life. <<<This is what I got!

I just want to thank everyone for all the advice and thoughts. I am feeling much better today and even went for a 5 mile walk this afternoon.
I do take on board what everyone has said and am seeing a doctor tomorrow morning. Once registered I will be part of the french system.

    IVA,

NO diabetic is immune to a stroke! My lightheadedness COULD have been due to standing quickly. My tearing feeling COULD have been something I ate. BOTH possible, and BOTH happened before. But it was FAR worse!

Fifty-three is plenty old to start getting regular doctor care. I had a heart attack at age 48. There was another guy in the hospital with me that same day who died from his at age 32!

If your blood pressure is high or you get chest pain or numbness in the shoulder or arm after physical activity don't mess around! Life is too precious to lose it over a trip to the doctor. You also should get a full blood workup, prostate exam and a colonoscopy at your age. For you smokers out there, add lung x-rays to that list and women, of course, breast examinations.

    Here's to a long life!

      Rick B is so right.
By all standards I was as healthy as a horse by all reports going into my 50s.It wasnt until I was 52 that my "hidden" health issue came to light and by then it was uncorrectable. Now 4 years later I spend 3 hours a day six days a week tied to a machine doing dialysis.

No matter what your age, if you have access to affordable health care, take advantage of it!

I am so sorry. I'm glad that your feeling better! Try cell food! It works for me. I also cured my high blood pressure by losing weight. I've heard that people can cure diabetes with a raw food diet, but I don't know if there are any studies on this.
