Hey guys.

Just making a quick survey/testimonial page, to see how many of you guys are full time internet marketers, making a living from this, and as the title says.. are COLLEGE DROPOUTS...

I'm doing this cause I'm pretty tired of college and my parents are forcing me to do it, and all I do during my free time is read and read about internet marketing.

I have one coach already, so I'm on my way to make money online (finally), but yeah.

I want to hear!!!!

I didn't make it as far as college.. left school when I was 16 to go work as a cleaner. It took a few dodgy years before the Internet thing kicked in.

Don't drop out man. Your parents are doing you a solid, one day you'll thank them for it.

Put your studies first and IM second, IM is always gonna be around.. the chance of a good education isn't.

Isn't it possible to do both?

I got my 4-year nursing degree...served in the US Army...and, did IM on the side....

A delicate balance could reap great results. If your IM gets to the point where you can quit your job, then great. But, if IM collapses, at least you'd have a degree to fall back on....

I dropped out when young and then spent most of my 20's studying for my degree part time while juggling children and a job - the internet came a lot later for me but if you can get your education and do the IM part time it is probably a good idea

I sense what you're asking for is justification to drop out of college, but I gotta tell you, you're not likely to find that here. Pretty soon this thread will be hopping with people telling you how important it is to take this opportunity to get a degree, and they are right.

Stay in school, do IM on the side, and you'll be much better prepared for the future than those of us (like me) who thought we knew better than our parents.

I advise you to stay in school and do IM as a side-job. That's what I did and although I am not as successful as I would be if I had been doing IM full-time and not attending University, I am definitely happier. I found new connections, new friends and have a solid degree to back me up wherever I go. Internet won't disappear, you will always be able to work on IM after you graduate. Also, I presume your parents are paying for your education. It would probably be irresponsible to drop out, don't you think?

Also, you say you are reading and reading about internet marketing...how about stop reading for a while and apply what you learned?

It took me 9 years to finish my degree... so I was pretty much a dropout! All the time I was traveling and doing IM. If I were to do it all over again I wouldn't have finished uni.

I recently did an interview with a guy that was a college dropout that is now making a killing in IM:

I would stay in school, if I were you I double majored in college, but I still had LOTS of free time (ahhhh, to have the life of a college student!). Stay in school and do IM on the side.

I'm NOT saying that you can't make it without college...that's not it at all.

But, the life experiences you're getting at college just can't be matched.

My goodness, what a nonsense: grab a backpack, your passport and a few thousand dollars and take off to travel the world. You will see how you can indeed match (and surpass) the "life experiences" you get at college... by a LONG margin!

What life experiences are you exactly referring to? do you mean the parties, the cheap buzz, the microwave food, the endless evenings studying and a few good buddies? because that's as much as I remember as far as "life experiences" goes from my years at college.

    I agree with Jenn.

However, if I were your parents, I wouldn't have forced you to go through College.

    Why?

Life is all about making choices. But don't blame your parents for your failures, in case you have any.Yes, you have to own it if you think you can go places without passing through College.

I think Bill Gates and most of the celebrities in the world today have a better testimonial when it comes to this.

If I ever fail with internet marketing and have to go get a job, my options are few...

If I had the degree, perhaps IM would not be my best option... LOL Although I would still do IM, because I am just not suited to the standard 9-5...

  • I dropped out of college in my third year because... quite frankly, I felt it was a HUGE waste of time: too theoretical, too detached from now-a-days world, too academic. I just couldn't see how I could apply any of that mambo jumbo in the real world out there.

Eventually, two years later, I came back, finished my studies and got my certifications, but I confirmed what I had suspected all along: it ended up being a waste of time!

If I could back in time, I wouldn't even enroll in the first place.

The fact is that most people who pursue Internet Marketing end up quitting, or failing to even generate 1 sale. A proper education is a solid foundation to a better future (although not guaranteed).

Why not major in something related to marketing or business. In that way you will gain skills that many other Internet Marketers lack, and that in itself will provide an advantage to you when you are able to pursue IM full-time.

Isn't the whole thrill with IM that you set your own hours - control your own destiny?

If you can't do both you are doing something wrong. Theres no need to drop out of college. Cut back on some classes? maybe, but entirely quit when you can learn to work IM more efficiently instead? No.

My parents forced me when I was about 16 or so to choose a career. I always loved to write and wanted to go to Bard in upstate NY. They told me that I would never make a living as a writer and to choose something else. I had been working in restaurants for a couple of years so I chose to go to culinary school. I finished up my first year and then dropped out. They kicked me out of the house 4 weeks later at the age of 18 and I've been on my own since.

I never went back to college and regret not having some sort of piece of paper. Here at the company that I work for I am one of about 3 people that don't have a college degree. My salary is significantly less than my college educated coworkers in my department and I have heard that having a college degree has now become a prerequisite to even being considered for a position here.

Point is... if you're interested in internet marketing a college eduction can mesh quite nicely with your interests. You can study writing, economics, business, graphics design etc...

If nothing else, furthering your education can make you a more well rounded person. Yes, the price can be high but going to a state school can make it a little more affordable. Personally, I would love to go back to college just to learn more about the things that interest me... American history, world history, different languages, philosophy... and of course, writing

My recommendation is to go to college but move in a direction that interests you. It's not all about making money or making a living. Some of the best marketers that I know understand not only how to write a provoking sales page but the psychology BEHIND why it works... what motivates people. Life is about learning...

I second that. If you can do marketing even if you're in college. Just spend a couple of hours everyday focusing on the internet stuff. When you finish college, you will be happy for achieving a good degree and happier as you don't have to search for a job and you're gonna be headed straight to your already build IM empire.

That's the problem with the frequent complaints here about "I want to quit school" - there's responsibility associated with deciding to make your own decisions.

I think anyone who has parents helping to pay for their education is a fool not to complete it.

However, if you are building up tens of thousands of dollars in student loans for study you have no interest in - it's a waste of money.

If your parents are paying your way in life, they have some right to dictate how your life is going. If you want total independence that includes taking responsibility for yourself financially.

wow, I totally didn't expect this...
guys thanks for your advice. I should probably continue with it.
The thing is that college takes time of me that I would love to use reading about internet marketing.
The other day I really spent more than 5 or 6 hours just going through the WarriorForum, reading freebies and all that, gaining knowledge.

I'm already applying some of it cause I'm taking a coaching. But I love this, and sometimes (even though I have plenty of free time with college), I still want more time to invest in IM.

Oh well. Thanks guys, I really appreciate your advice. If anyone else wants to contribute feel free to do so lol. I haven't made a decision yet, but I'm loving this thread so far.

      Here's my advise.

First of all, thing hard about why you want to drop out and why you are at college. Is the only reason you came to college just to please your parents or do you have other reasons you are forgetting. Write out the answers to both of these questions. Just make sure you are being honest with yourself about the reasons.

Second, if you feel that you should drop out, my advise is this: Start doing IM as your "college job" first until you are making enough to support yourself. You don't need to have a fancy life and you don't have to know everything about IM to start. Work with free/cheap methods first. If you can pay rent and utilities on a tiny place and still afford groceries, than that's good enough.

Once you are making enough to support yourself, you are ready to make the decision about dropping out. The reason I say this is because knowledge and doing can be very different and your income will not be predictable in IM.

When my husband (Rob/ccmusicman) started IM he ended up with over $2000 in credit card debt from PPC and hardly made anything. He decided to do what I just suggested to you and stayed in school until he was able to support himself and then dropped out. He has shared his story various places around the forum.

Why did I tell you this? Just to give you food for thought.

Should you let anyone on this forum or anywhere else make this decision for you? No.

As for the list of millionaires who have higher education, it is endless.

It's all about different strokes for different folks. Yes, all of us must not go to college but that doesn't mean that higher education is meaningless, worthless or whatever.

Lets see the list of college educated who still have yet to find a job in their field?

        See what I just did?

PS - To the OP. Don't go to school for your parents. Go for you. If you have no desire to be there, then you are just wasting money and making yourself miserable.

I highly suggest you take a year or two (or more) off. Work in the "real world" for some time. Try to start your own business.

The point is to do what YOU want. Not what anyone else - in this forum, your parents, teachers, friends, etc. tells you what to do.

    it's a strange world.

You'll spend a lot of time and money to get a degree in order to get a job.

Once you're hired you'll realize that you didn't need to spend 4 years of your life and a lot of money in order to do the job you were hired for.

If you are going to invest that much time and money... major in something that really requires an education. Don't be the liberal arts guy or communications girl.

I feel like you created a thread just for me. I don't go by "The College Dropout" for nothing. Thank you, I'm humbled. Ha ha just kidding. Sounds like you are in much the same boat that I was a few years ago which is why you'll probably be surprised when I say that you should stay in school.....for now. There's a reason I say this. I have no idea what your income level is from internet marketing or your business plan therefore it'd be reckless to potentially give up on something you've worked hard for (your education).

I dropped out of college and went full time when I had a business plan in place that was making me consistent profits. I cannot emphasize the word 'consistent' enough. It's not overly difficult to make a few dollars here and there online but not everyone has the gusto to flesh it out into a FULL BUSINESS PLAN. I teach all sorts of people exactly what I do for a full time income and people still give up. Go figure.

I'm living proof that you don't need a college degree to have success in internet marketing and there are examples of many others stated above but that doesn't necessarily mean college is a waste of time. Now if your hobby in this turns into a full fledged effort with focus, commitment and a plan that makes you good money then you probably won't care about getting a college degree too much anymore. Only you can answer this. Best of luck.

      Come on.

You say you READ about internet marketing? Ok, that's fine. Tell me one thing though - how is READING going to pay your bills?

No, seriously, I'm in a very, very similar position. I know my formal education won't do me any good, I already know most of what I need and everything my university has to offer from now on is just mambo jambo.

But until I am 150% sure that internet marketing can be my profession, that I understand it, that I will always make money when I need to, until that very time - I have to keep other options open.

I'm a proud man, I would never ever intentionally make a decision that would make me crawl back to my parents to take care of me after, and pardon the language, I screwed up.

This is neither funny nor easy decision you know. It's your life you're considering...

It's a great idea to have a plan, to have a dream and to go for it. But always consider every possibility and always have more options open.

I don't think you realize the seriousness of the situation, that's why I'm giving you the parent's talk even though I'm probably at your age or even younger...

Doing Internet Marketing is sooo much better than sitting in boring classes that your not all the way interested in.

It's a hard decision to make, but it's one that you have to make on your own. I would suggest earning some income, if you haven't already, and sit your parents down to have...

    "The Talk"

I did this to my parents when I felt like it was time for me to leave college alone. They didn't like it, but they respect my decision. I was already making income and paying my way through college with the money from IM, so I had a strong argument before I entered the cage. LOL!

Follow your heart and do what you love...

I know what it feels like to sit through boring lectures while Day-dreaming about creating products, driving traffic to your websites and generating cash 24/7 from your personal computer.

I'm so glad I don't sit through those classes anymore...

    Good Times!

I'm not sure I understand what your point is here. But I'm guessing that if they could do it, why can't I?

Also, for all the people that are wondering (I also want to explain myself a little bit more), I'm not against college by any means. What I do think is that it's not for everyone. It just depends on your goals, and if you have a very well designed plan for what you want to achieve, and if you're constantly working to make that plan/dream become a reality. Then you'll see if college is for you or if it isn't.

As Rob said: I think I need a year off or something. I want to continue implementing what I've been learning with internet marketing. And as a matter of fact, I already have 1 site up, and I'll work to bring traffic to it, and hopefully sometime soon make sales with it. But that's the thing, that's what I'm doing, that's what I love.

In my country, there's not even an internet marketing degree. And if there was, I'll bet you I know a lot more than the teachers of the program. I'm from Panama by the way.

Anyways, people continue giving your opinions. I've read every single one of the posts, and I want to have a very good amount of advice from full time internet marketers, who understand where I'm coming from, so I can make my decision in the future.

Thanks in advance =) and thanks to everyone who has commented so far. I love this.

I got my first client with my degree. I know that because he kept looking at me and going 'so you have a degree from ..." a lot, as if it was some sort of justification for his decisions

Yea you probably need a year off to do stuff. After then maybe you can decide.

If you could juggle the two, I would say stick with it, might come in useful as a backup plan

It's better to have two source of opportunities, than one. That's just common sense.

I dropped out of college and got a full-time job programming just as I would have if I had stuck with it and am able to do IM. I don't regret dropping out at all and I don't see why everybody here thinks it's their job to keep you in school.

Despite being interested in computers and "hacking/coding" since I was about 8 years old, I never studied it or thought I could make a career out of it until my 20's

I was good at Maths and Science, so I studied them. But of course I dropped out after I lost interest and then started to focus on my computer skills.

The internet captured my imagination and I have never looked back
