I know what you're thinking. The answer is no, I'm not on the crack pipe. Simmer down, Warriors.

But I am here to recommend 5-Hour Energy Extra Strength. I just tried one of those things for the first time the other day, and holy shnikies! I have a sleep disorder that includes serious bouts of insomnia from time to time, so I often fight the urge to take a long nap pretty much every day. It's very frustrating when you have a business to run. I need every advantage I can get that doesn't include jail time or addiction. And this stuff apparently isn't illegal or addicting. BONUS!

If they have an affiliate program, I might have to partake now that I've actually tried it and it works.

That's really why I started this thread, by the way. If you're an affiliate marketer - something I've been for about 8 years now - I have 2 pieces of advice that will make you more believable and help you avoid angering your list and wrecking your reputation:

1. Buy and use the products you recommend.
- AND/OR -
2. Only recommend products from creators you know and trust to always put out top-rate stuff.

That's it. If you just stick to those 2 simple "rules" you won't go wrong. But stay off the crack. A little pot now and then is ok.

    John -

Don't know where you bought the 5-hr. I haven't tried the "extra" but the standard works well for me.

At good old wally-mart you can get multi-packs for less than $2 a bottle.

It didn't for me. Not sure it lasted 5 hours, but that's just clever marketing on their part. I would guess around 3 hours for me with no crash. I'm sure results vary from person to person. My wife drank half of one and said it made her sleepy. Then she downed the rest of it and was peppy. LOL

    Hey Kay,

Yeah, I got this extra strength version at Wal-Mart. It was pricey, but it does pack an extra punch. I think I paid about $15 for a six-pack. I see it as an investment. If I can be more productive during times when I otherwise would be sitting here like a vegetable or taking a nap, that's a no-brainer.

Its always good to promote products you believe in and have personal experience with, its usually where the best business ideas come from, and you'll certainly be able to connect with your audience better.

Personally I just go for exercise and a good diet to help me with energy and getting a good nights sleep.

Oh, I exercise. My fingers are in awesome shape from all the typing. I must burn like 14 calories a day typing. I wish there was an Olympic event for it. GOLD MEDALS ALL DAY, BABY!!!

I recently read a story about a professor at Kansas State University who ate nothing but Little Debbies and Twinkies for a month. He lost like 25 lbs. and his cholesterol got better. VINDICATION!!!

I got the same stuff. Works like a charm. No crash. My thing is it does tense the muscles a bit which is a bad thing for me. If I didn't have this 'problem' I probably wouldn't even noticed it. Unless you have a severe nerve compression problem, works better than coffee. Coffee will make you crash!

I like that there's very little sugar in 5-Hour Energy (if any). I definitely crash hard a couple of hours after eating/drinking anything with a high sugar content. I think that may be why it doesn't happen with 5-Hour Energy. Seems to be the best solution that doesn't include running from the law and/or getting addicted to something. I wish it was cheaper, but coffee's expensive too.

Having a sleep disorder, I was RX'ed Modafinil (as Provigil) a few years ago. It was unbelievable! Just an amazing drug. Sadly, it pooped out on me after about 2 weeks. But man oh man, when that stuff worked I was both wide awake and totally focused. I felt like crying when it stopped working. Something about how the brain adapts to the chemical changes quickly in some people. Lucky me, I was one of them.

  • Hey John,

Did you know that there has been some controversy with the long term side effects of some of the ingredients in some of these energy drinks, i.e., taurine & sucralose (not 'sucrose')? (PS, you'll probably need to go to a library to get more info, because doing a quick search just yielded spun articles in article directories, etc for what seems to be ppl promoting certain products ) Also, if I recall correctly, sucralose (not 'sucrose') was created after the controversy with aspartame (also a sugar substitute), and apparently there is some controversy with the health effects of that as well.

This looked like a more legit article though on sucralose -> http://www.womentowomen.com/healthyweight/splenda.aspx

    I.e.,

"...While some industry experts claim the molecule is similar to table salt or sugar, other independent researchers say it has more in common with pesticides... The manufacturer’s own short-term studies showed that very high doses of sucralose (far beyond what would be expected in an ordinary diet) caused shrunken thymus glands, enlarged livers, and kidney disorders in rodents."

Surcralos is poison. Period. It will f*** up your endocrine system something furious and can also help cause insulin resistance. It can even cross your blood/brain barrior to cause some other terrific problems.

It's not a good idea to eat anything with fake sugar..........and even fructose in the form they use in process foods is so processed that it bears no resemblance to its natural form.

I've never looked at the other ingredients in those things - as soon as I see the fake sugars I leave em alone.

John, now that you're on to "5 Hour" can I have first dibbs on your crack pipe?

Seriously, I got one about a month ago and it sat around a few days. About 2AM one night I was trying to work online and kept dozing off. I gulped down the bottle and leaned back in my chair. I woke up about 7 hours later! I think I was just plain too tired and even with the shot I dozed off into lala land. SHOT THE HECK OUT OF $3.50!

Over here we have this stuff called Pro-Plus, which is supposed to give you a bit of zing. Weird name really, since as far as I know you can't just buy 'Pro'. Me and my sister tried it one day after we'd both had sleepless nights and we needed to go into town. We're allergic to so many things that I was careful to check the label, but the only active ingredient it claimed to have was caffeine. I'm far from being a stranger to that, so we popped the pills according to the stated dosage and off we went.

About an hour later I started to feel really 'floaty'. Every time I tried to look at something I found myself focussing on a spot about a foot above it and had a feeling not too dissimilar to the one you get after you've had a baby and been pumped up with too much pethidine. I seldom tell anyone when I'm feeling ropey until I have to and would not have mentioned it if my sister hadn't suddenly said 'You know what, I feel ever so strange' (Ohhhhhhh yes - peace, sister!). By the time we left town everything I looked at had an almost fluorescent quality about it.

Never again. I think somebody else must have had the box with the 'zing' in it - it gave me about as much edge as a fried ice-cream and made as much sense

If you wind down at night, get a good nights rest, you should be able to work the next day without taking anything.

I avoid drinking any caffeine. I only have decaffinated tea and coffee. I never drink Cola because it's so bad for you - high in acid for example.

Also you should eat fruit and vegetables to make sure you are maintaining the right alkaline balance and getting all your minerals and vitamins.

If you eat protein rather than carbs you will be more alert. If you eat carbs later on at night it will help you sleep better but avoid the refined sugars at all times.

Finally remember that we all operate on a cycle of around 45 minutes where every 45 minutes or so you should take a break.

Watching TV, movies or playing computer games is not good for relaxation. Also smoking cigarettes is not relaxation because it is a stimulant.

If you are needing to take stimulants to stay away I really recommend you look at changing your lifestyle!

Why would I want nasty hair on my head? It's hot in the Summer (I live in Texas). It's hard to keep clean. It itches. It makes a ballcap fit funny and fly off when you drive with the top down.

Don't take offense at my reply to this, ok? But I HATE when people smugly say such things, as though it applies across the board for all people in all circumstances. I said in the OP that I have a sleep disorder. I need stimulants to stay awake because of that, not because I'm failing to follow your regimen or have a lifestyle problem. Until you've lived in someone else's skin, you should avoid giving platitudinous advice about lifestyles and changing things. I envy you if you don't need to do anything more than what you suggest above. But don't for a moment believe that what works for you on this particular score will work for those of us who have lived for years... decades... with clinical sleep disorders.

Sorry, this came off more angry than it really makes me. I don't mean to single you out, but I've dealt with this kind of reply for about 20 years and it frustrates me. It's like people who tell clinically depressed people to "just snap out of it."

I've never tried a Red Bull or Monster Energy drink specifically because of all the bad stuff you hear about them. Nothing's worth ruining your health over. I don't think drinking one of these 5-Hour shots is something I'd do regularly. Just maybe a couple times a week as needed. I've known a lot of online business owners over the years, and if there's a nearly unanimous complaint we all have, it's being tired a lot and not having enough productive hours in the day. I figure anything that gives me an edge that way is worth it, as long as I'm not risking my health too much.

I can't believe I'm actually reading a positive endorsement of 5 hour energy. I have taken them before as I too have sleeping issues from time to time and I was more tired! I think 5 hour energy is just placebo. Maybe sugary placebo. I think I'll stick to energy drinks which I'm sure are destroying my stomach but give me the boost nonetheless.

I don't believe there is any sugar in 5-Hour. And of course these things will work for some and not for others. From all I've read, you do yourself major potential harm if you habitually use Red Bull or Monster. That's why I tried 5-Hour, and it worked for me.

Nah, you can drink whatever you want and still live a healthy life. Water isn't a cure for disease. You can live a healthy life if you do some daily exercise such as running a few miles or hitting the weights and strengthening your body. Keep your heart strong.
