When I started to learn to play the Guitar in the early '60s these were some of the first songs I learned. They had a play-along album that had all the music, notes, and chords in diagramed lessons you followed along.

Time machines do indeed exist.......hit the play button and ZAP!!! back in the mid-60's!

College was good, beer was cold and the U.S. draft had yet to find my name.

Are you sure? The description at youtube says it's him. Guest appearance. However, youtubers have been know to be wrong in their descriptions before.

And I have been wrong before too!
Anyways, it was late when I responded and I was thinking MAx would have been east coast and the Ventures were West Coast ( I'm pretty sure).
But the main band is older so maybe he did do a guest appearance?

If you look at the way the drummer in question holds the stick in his left hand...it sure looks like it could be Max...

The one that is definitely not Max holds them the proper way. That is,the way I was taught to hold them when I was learning how to play.
The one that might be Max (MBM for short!) does not. Was that a trademark of Max's?

In the Wipeout video, the drummer on the right (as we look) is definitely Mel Taylor.

The one on the left looks vaguely like Max, but take away the glasses - then not so much.

                Great clip.

                Kim,

If you look at these two videos, the first one is Max, and the second one is Buddy Rich, you can see what I'm talking about. It could just be me, but after watching Max W for quite a few years it seems to me he likes to hold his sticks with a match grip on occasions. Not always, but it appears he does it more than most drummers I've seen.

    Kowabunga, KJ!

As genres go I see so much association between 'surf rock' and 'punk rock' (my fave rock)

... and way before anybody ever heard of either one, the Ventures always had the most frenetic and complex guitar riffs of any other rock n' roll there was (back in the day and prior to Jimi Hendrix and the Who etc). (however due to technology it sounds pretty tame now!)

    It is extremely exciting!

    Shoot the Curl!

Link Wray (WAY!) was one of the first in the genre. (late 50's)

      Pat,

The first one is easily recognized, and who is that playing the steel pedal guitar, why it's none other than Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of all people...pretty cool.

I'm guessing the Santo and Johnny version predates the forming of the Ventures by a little bit. I haven't researched that...I'm waiting for Wags to chime in here...

      Ah...Buddy Rich.

      One of the greatest.

Man that video takes me back.

Thanks for the blast from the past.

I think he's the reason I started playing drums back in the mid 70s.
