I am new in marketing, I've been studying and learning for a few years...yes, I know..please don't criticize me there, LOL, I'm a little slow when it comes to the "action" word...anyway...I have all the tools in my head, I'm a web designer and graphic designer, I need not much help when it comes to setting up blogs, websites, graphics, etc...what I'm having problem with is actually taking everything I know and DOING it, I'm holding myself back for some reason, learning marketing has been my passion for several years now, but I'm having a problem I guess with implementing it, I'm scared to move forward..maybe it's cause I'm afraid I'm going to fail..I have that perfection gene *sigh*...I also know that if I don't try and fail many times over that I'm never going to find what works for me or what doesn't.

I've already done so many things, just never actually put them in action..I'm talking about products, websites, articles, reports, ideas and such..

Can anyone kick me in the **rse to get me started here? I just am at a loss and fighting with myself...you can call me stupid if you want to, I'd truly appreciate it, I just can't find the missing link!! LOL..

Thanks in advance for anything at all!!

I know there is a HUGE demand for your services, because that is a major part of my own business. Set an income goal, and figure how many customers it would take to reach that goal. You might try getting started by contacting local businesses. This will get you a fast income because many small businesses need this type of service to remain competitive. Using these businesses as a start and as samples, begin promoting online. Write articles for tips on web site and graphics design, and post them to online ezine directories.

Every journey starts with the first step.

If I were you, I would probably make a "showcase portfolio"
of the whole spectrum of what you have done and can do
...perhaps with some positive comments by happy customers
pn a CD/DVD. Use voice and text to lead the viewer in their
journey through your expertise and examples.

Then go around your your local town/area and talk to
likely customers .... don't avoid freebies for good causes
like churches etc. Play the CD on your laptop ... and
leave a copy CD in a nice presentation case with likely people.

Try to get a feature/interview in the local news or community
and free papers or local TV/Radio station. Get some business
cards and headed notepaper. Get some "On-vehicle" advertising
stickers for your car. Visit people you know and aske them if they
know of others who may be interested.

This is a "slow burn" and low cost beginning which should not
take you out of any comfort zones too rapidly.
Then when you have a few good completed commissions to
add to your portfolio CD or website .... then you will have
gained confidence to expand your horizons further afield,
on the Net and online in places such as here.

Final advice .... be yourself and stay that way. Potential
good clients prefer doing business with competent human
beings .... not stereotypical sales people in power suits.
Get a friendly attorney to draw up a contract form and
terms which suit YOU!!! Stick to that and you should not
get ripped off by clients who never intended to pay for
your work. Also consider copyright implications which
clients might reasonably expect to own in respect of
work which they have paid for.

If all else fails .... open up the Yellow Pages and start phoning
when you have something like a good web/CD portfolio to
      follow up with.

Thank you to both of you for your advice!!

Mike, I am doing exactly what you have suggested..and I think you are right...the process you outlined will not take me out of my "comfort" zone which I think is part of my problem, I get a little overwhelmed with the thought of how to put everything together and the steps that you have given me will avoid this from happening, thank you so much!!

Just remember that you have to take those first steps Adriana.
Its more a question of gaining a direction and a purpose and the
confidence which comes with that. Information overload is a
well-recognised internet syndrome ... and best avoided imho.

Just do not get stuck in a loop trying to perfect a portfolio.
You know whats good .... use that at first!!!! Then set apart
some time each day or week as life permits to phone or go
out and about introducing yourself and your capabilities to
likely people ..... eg selling your stuff

It will be hard, tedious and soul-destroying at times, but
perseverence is the keyword. Learn and adapt if need be.
One day, you will get that first big commission and the
sun will shine again .... and again ..... and again

          good luck

Thank you so much for the wonderful advice and encouragement you have given to me here. It just took a few people to get me to pull my head out and get going.

In the past week since you did this for me, I have sold a website on ebay, my first ever sale! And I was completely astounded that it sold..it is a very nice site and I worked hard on it, I was in shock really is the word I can use to describe my feeling...then after that excitement LOL...

I have also gone out and gotten a local design job in my community...just walked in and talked to them...I really truly wish I would have done this years ago!! I keep asking myself why why why *shakes head* LOL...

Thank you so much again!!! *HUGE HUGE HUGS*

              I only just read this.

Why not get more local addresses and win them round to what you have to offer? Direct marketing.

Congratulations on selling your first website. Now go replicate that over and over again.

      Hi

It sounds like you are a perfectionist. That said you must act on the information you have at the moment.

My advice would be to break whatever you want to do into small steps. Remember that saying... the best way to eat an Elephant is piece by piece?

There is only so much you can learn online after that you are simply learning to do the same things better. Most of those making profits (I do not mean those making money) have taken the first step. The question is what is your first step?

Mark it out and go for it. There is really no other way of telling you to take action. You have to want to do it yourself.

You've got what it takes. The fear of failure is really not an option. You were not afraid of failing to understand marketing were you?

If you put aside the fact that there is so much information out there and still waded through it then I think you are a candidate for success.

      Hope this helps

      K
