Just trying to gets some help for my sister she is trying to wean her 15 month old baby from her boobs, but it just is not working very well. She uses her boobs like a pacifier to fall asleep. The more she trys to wean her the more my niece wants boobie milk. My kids only breastfeed until they were 4 months so I didn't have that problem. So if anyone has any tricks or tips please tell

Wow, let me think back!!!! My second son refused a bottle and would only be breast fed so I fed him until he was 16 months old because I just couldn't get him to take a bottle.

I think if she is using the boob as a pacifier she might need to take the tough approach and refuse to let her fall asleep while feeding. Give her a feed then place her in her cot. She can do the controlled crying thing - although I could never bring myself to do that - or just sit with her and rub her back until she settles. She might just need to change the routine to get her out of the habit of falling asleep while feeding.

I know it's hard, but I think she just needs to grit her teeth and be tough. Will she drink from a bottle or cup at all? My son went from the boob straight to a cup, but I can't remember exactly how I did the transition.

I had a similar issue with my son when he was 2. He didn't want to quit but I was over it.

I got some of that stuff you paint on your fingernails to stop you biting them, it tastes horrible. I painted my boobs with that, and when he asked, I just said "sure". He didn't like it at all, so I offered him a cuddle instead. He only tried it twice after that.

The hardest part I think is being tough when they're sobbing for a nurse. This way he made the decision, and I never pushed him away.

That is the meanest, but funniest weaning story I've ever heard. I love it!!!

LOL! It worked a treat. I never said no to him, he never felt rejected, he just decided to stop because it tasted so foul :-) For me, it felt less mean than just saying no and pushing him away.

You could just get sneaky and just as the kid is dropping off to sleep, swap the boob for a bottle... She might then get used to the flavour, and then you can use the bottle as a sleep cue.

I had to wean my daughter the hard way - we were both on medication, so we had to go cold turkey. It was hard, but only for about 3 days - and then she began to sleep so well I was glad I did have to stop.

I've heard that you can introduce some new foods to your own diet to make the taste change - go heavy on the vindaloo for a week!
Also, if she's serious, sage tea will reduce the production of breast milk. If you offer the bottle at the same time as taking the tea, mum will stop smelling like dinner... if you know what I mean.

Good luck. It's a terrible time...

One thing to try if at all possible........have someone besides mommy put her to sleep. So long as the source is there in front of the baby, the baby will smell/know...........and want!

Thanks for the great ideas I will let her know. The bad part is my niece has never liked a bottle so the switch to the bottle won't work. She is very attached to mommy so not very many other people can watch her or put her to sleep. When I watched her I just put her to sleep by a car ride. She is a very smart 1 year old, she did the funniest thing ever when I was watching her and she wanted boobie she walked out of her moms room with her moms bra and her nursing pillow it was hilarious she thought she could get some milk that way maybe it was too cute.
    Thanks again for the tips.
