Ain't this interesting. The trends of Warrior Forumers....

Hey Guys,

Remember when Allen introduced the signature banners, there was an uproar of people who said that they would never be able to get used to going through colorful sigs, and a couple threads on it.

Then there were threads on how to make more money, designers for sigs, and a heckuvalot more about the sig banners.

Note how all of those have kind of died out now, there's still a few kickin' when it comes to designers, but the heat is really off.

Then there was the WF banner ads, when we all spent hours refreshing trying to get a slot on the forum. At that point, everyone complained that they couldn't get used to the big fat banner at the top of the page.

And people started to "push" the limits and the whole 9 yards...

Notice how all of this stuff is starting to die out. IT's so interesting that no more we are finding these "complainers" or people who are upset with how the forum is, are so quiet now, it's like they got used to it..

Just thought some food for thought would be nice.

Caleb

Almost like when people first started putting affiliate links in their posts and people started complaining about it. Then people realised the value that could be involved in it and so it slowly stopped being so much of an issue.

    Oh...wait.

I think a lot of the protests about the sig banners were generated between the time when Allen closed the first offer that permitted them and the time when he launched an alternative. Of course, there will be some people who are genuinely put out by them for whatever reason, but I think most were just complaining because they thought they'd missed the boat and wanted a sig banner of their own. It would explain why things seem to have got quieter on the subject now.

I can just hear what your avatar would be saying. Knowing the type of things that you use for graphics. It could get very interesting.

Too true some people are just plain simple complainers.

I agree that alot of what's discussed here is human nature..given some time people get used to things and the "big bad blah -de- blah" merges into the blurr of what is then considered normal and the way of things now.

Some people notice these changes and the reactions to them, like caleb did and others dont at all.

I was actually picking up on a trend . But I didn't mean to relight the flame, oh well, maybe we can get them out of there hiding spots, and convince them to think like us...

It’s called the Overton window. You can take people to the edge and there will be complaints and grumblings but will eventually be accepted or at least tolerated. But you have to watch go outside that window and people will rebel.

If you keep repeating this process you can, over time, move people far outside the original boundary.

Just some additional food for thought

Seems like human nature. When the forum logo was redesigned, people freaked out. Same goes for most sites that make changes (like when Yahoo! has gone through it's major redesigns).

Grocery stores and other retail outlets do major redesigns purposely, just so people go off their usual path and see more items in the store. Of course it's a bit weird at first, but people get used to it quickly.

It happens at home, too. For example, Caleb, has your mom ever re-arranged the livingroom furniture? And were you a little "weirded out" by it when you first saw the new arrangement? But I bet you got used to it quickly, perhaps in a matter of hours.

Generally speaking, any change makes people upset. Heck, my business partner finally gets a smart phone this week and spends 2 days complaining about user interface....it just takes time even when the change is positive.

People hate change but most get adjusted to it. You think this was bad... when I worked in corporate America we switched CRM for the entire company (Fortune 100 company) from JD Edwards to SAP. You aint seen bitching till you go through that.

So, what's the bottom line here? Warriors are supposed to just drink the Kool-Aid and never express their opinion about anything?

People may complain about change, but not all change is good. So, why shouldn't they speak up?

There's no harm in speaking up, at all, I think?

But there's no point in making "threats" to leave in a huff, as some people seem to do, from time-to-time - it simply won't change nothing.

If Allen (or any other forum owner) wants or needs to enhance the monetisation of the forum, then he's going to experiment with and provide different ways for that to happen. And those who complain will do so no matter the form of those changes / additions.

In comparison to other forums, this forum has little to no ads. If you look at digitalpoint for example, you can see that he has a whole crapload of flashy banners to get you to buy ad spots.

Allen has one single thread promoting it in a section, that most people never visit.

So he's not even pushing us to buy advertising.

Jill, I was aware of that too, and frankly I find it quite shocking that they were peddling an extremely addictive substance like cocaine to the general public as recently as the early 20th century. Here's the actual formula used in the original coke....

                            "Coca — cocaine

Pemberton called for five ounces of coca leaf per gallon of syrup, a significant dose; in 1891, Candler claimed his formula (altered extensively from Pemberton's original) contained only a tenth of this amount. Coca-Cola did once contain an estimated nine milligrams of cocaine per glass, but in 1903 it was removed.[30] Coca-Cola still contains coca flavoring.
After 1904, instead of using fresh leaves, Coca-Cola started using "spent" leaves — the leftovers of the cocaine-extraction process with cocaine trace levels left over at a molecular level.[31] To this day, Coca-Cola uses as an ingredient a cocaine-free coca leaf extract prepared at a Stepan Company plant in Maywood, New Jersey."

HEY, whatta you guys mean don't drink the kool-aid? I LOVE kool-aid.
                  Well
Maybe not THEIR kool aid, but get a big pitcher of it and spike it with white lightnin' or at least some ever clear and it's pretty good stuff.......
Which is real fun for us normal folk, but it doesn't mix well with the whiner's systems. Then they get all blubbery and ridiculous.

STEVE...........this was BYOB. Didn't you get your notice?

    Hey Caleb,

to be honest... I don't even look at the ads anymore. And if others do the same, the effectiveness of these banners and small ads will soon be less than worth it.

Has anyone clicked on of those small "Ads By Warrior Forum"?

I haven't clicked on the small Adsense like Ads yet but I have on the banners even purchased. Like anything in marketing just slapping up a banner up there won't lead to loads of cash. The headline, copy, offer, font, all comes into play.

Yes, a lot of people go into banner blindness mode but a lot of others do not so people need to work on the copy and offer of the banner more than just getting something up there.

What's the point in complaining... there are a lot of things I like/dislike here, but if I'm ticked off I can leave 'cause guess what? Allen OWNS it, lol. This place is anything but a democracy. Start your own forum if you want it your way.

Complainers change their complaints, but they never reduce the amount of time spent in complaining.

You know how it is man...

    People are afraid of change.

Do something different and there will be an uproar for a while, until everyone accepts this is how things will be from now on... then they find different things to complain about.

I suppose it's human nature to want to keep the status quo, and change is usually met with resistance and complaints. Overall, I'd say that changes have been for the positive, and Allen has to be congratulated for testing and tweaking things to near-perfection.

I find the signature banners distracting myself - but doesn't matter cause it's not my forum so why gripe?

What I've also noticed is the addition of the larger signature banners has led to quite a few text/link sigs that are over 5 lines now - so maybe that's part of it.

I expect banner blindness sets in after a while, doesn't it?

January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.

Yes it does. I tend to rotate mine periodically and that means at least once a week minimum.

People tend to get a little upset when something they are used to changes, but like the net things change all the time, and people just carry on
